Where and When?

Please take heed – this is not a thread to bitch and moan about TOB coming back, or to bitch and moan about how most of us turned away in disgust at some point yesterday afternoon. Nay, tis a thread for Wolfpackers to share their stories of when and where they learned that NC State had in fact, somehow, someway – won that freaking game yesterday.

For me, I turned off the game at 21-7. I felt the nausea welling up in my gut, and I couldn’t put my special ladyfriend through another minute. Especially on a glorious sunny Outer Banks afternoon. So off to the dunes we went. She left her sunglasses in the hotel room, so while waiting, I flipped on the XM feed…and it was already 28-7. Game goes off immediately, and I swear not to even look anymore.

At about 5:20, I was on the way back from Corrolla, almost to Duck. Got a message from a friend saying “stuck in airport, did we beat MD??” I decided I should at least have the final score to report, so I pulled up ESPN’s college FB page…and did a literal spit-take. 56-41…STATE? No shit????

I honestly had no clue or hope until that moment. Given how none of my other Pack friends and family texted or e-mailed, I suspect many other SFN denizens have similar stories to share.

Greatest comeback I ever seen the Wolfpack perform. We are the kind of team that can make you feel terrible as a fan for being so hard on them. Kind of I should not have said that feeling. But in defense of us fans who would have thought 41-14 and a State comeback victory.

I will say that we should also feel real lucky that Maryland was not a deep team on Defense.

I stormed out of the stadium at 41-14, telling my spouse how I was going to write an email to Debbie Yow on Monday and how I would complain that I broke my neck driving back from out of town to make it to the game, and the fanbase deserved better than this. Drove home to N. Raleigh, cleaned up a little from the out of town trip for Thanksgiving, and happened to turn the TV on to check scores of other games. By some miraculous coincidence, the dog sitter who had been there over the holiday had left the TV on channel 5, and the score was now 42-41. I immediately hit pause on the DVR, yelled for the spouse, and rewound it as far as the DVR will go (I hadn’t set the game to record, but DirectTV DVRs give you the last hour of whatever’s on when you cut the TV on). So we got to watch (thankfully) all the way back to the moment I’d left.

I feel rather guilty, and will for the rest of my life use this as an example of the Valvano “don’t ever give up” credo…

I will spend the offseason pondering how we lost to BC and lost to FSU so badly, but given the injuries disrupting what turned out really WAS a pretty good defense, I’ll take 7-5 and Charlotte.

I almost walked away at 28-7 and 41-14. But I could not turn it off. I just couldn’t believe we were going to get our asses handed to us by THIS Maryland team. I kept waiting for the comeback that I knew had to be coming. I felt like we would probably come up a touchdown or two short. But when we got that fumble…I knew it was on at that point. If I told you I wasn’t surprised by the outcome yesterday, you’d probably call me a G.D. liar, but I really wasn’t. Maryland is that terrible and we are not nearly as bad as we looked in the first half. I just didn’t expect it to go down like it did, scoring 35 4th quarter points.

I did not move from my seat the entire game. Granted, I was maybe 10-12 sheets to the wind at the time, and did not properly comprehend what I was seeing, but I sobered up quick enough when we started mounting our historical comeback.

As I told my friends last year when we punted against Clemson on 4th down — TOB is good for 7-9 wins a year, but nothing more. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

Played golf at Lonnie Poole with son (both State grads). We checked the score at the turn (14-0). We had planned to go to Sammy’s and eat and watch the end of the game. We checked the score on the way to Sammy’s and it was 41-14. We were both totally shocked, not that we were losing but that we were getting stomped.
I asked my son if he still wanted to go and his response was that we still need to eat. So we enjoyed our beer and watched a great comeback- a day we will always remember…Thanks Pack!

I was trying to get some work done in the office, but I was getting text updates from ESPN on every score. Of course at halftime I was very pleased with my decision not to watch. When the comeback started I was intrigued but did not immediately start watching. When we pulled to within 6 I decided I should turn the game on and watch the rest. Crazy game.

  7. Khan 11/27/2011 at 10:36 PM #

“I actually watched the whole thing. When the comeback started in the second half, I envisioned the worst-possible-case scenario. I figured we’d manage to take the lead, 42-41, and then Maryland would end up winning on a long field goal by their backup kicker. Luckily it didn’t work out that way.”

This is exactly what I did as well.

. Dodging sheriffs with some brown drink I thought State could do this. Hince the brown liquor… The afghan post put all of my experience in perspective. God bless our soldiers. They r not watching from the sidelines.

1 – This thing is filtering my responses again.
2 – Took off from Ontario (CA) Airport with the Pack down 28-14 at halftime. Landed in DFW, fired up ScoreMobile (expecting to see at 45-13 loss), and saw the final score. Had to get the wife (an 18-year unc-ch fan) to look at it with me to confirm that, yes, we hung a 35-0 4th Quarter on them to win.

Beat Clemson, Beat Texas (bball), Beat UMd in a week? Enjoy it while it lasts, folks… we’re the Pack, and it’s a-comin’ back down.

timberwolf, i LOVED our military appreciation day. I hope they enjoyed themselves. I hope NCSU can enhance this next year.

When MD missed the PAT, i thought that the foible may come back to bite ’em. So, when the score amazingly made it to 42-41, i had a fear that MD would break our hearts with either a field goal to win the game, or make a TD/2pt and win in overtime. I couldn’t rest easy until it was the final 56-41 score.

Actually, if i had not risked a heart attack, i wish the score would have ended at 42-41, esp. if it involved a missed MD field goal in the last seconds. (I think my favorite TOB-vs-BD game was the 25-24 game, but 41-10 is pretty sweet, too.)

What an unforgettable game. I almost left. I was at the game with a couple other fans (kin) who are not State grads who had just about seen enough when it was 35-14, and I didn’t want to force them to continue to watch the fiasco.

Fortunately, the weather was perfect for a halftime tailgate party (extended disco version). That gave the team enough time to stage their comeback, and inspire us to return to our seats. THANK GOD!!

I remember very well when NCSU was down to WF in the ’70’s something like 20-0 late in the fourth quarter and WON – i think by 1 point!! And wasn’t it vs. App St. that NCSU was down late in the 4th something like 21-0 and won by 1 or 2 points? Those games helped me cope with the MD game saturday!

    Wolfonthehill,

I, too, expected to see a point taken away from THE Pack at some point. yuk-yuk-yuk! Good post.

I have been to every home game since my first year at NC State (1992) except for my year in Iraq and the 6 months leading up to the deployment. And of course I missed a few games for huricane duty when I was in the National Guard. In general, I’ve been to every game and had season tickets all those years. In all that, I have left 2 games early. The “giving him the business” 30 something shutout to Maryland that knocked us out of post-season was the first game ever that I left early. We got up from our seats at 35-14 and went to leave. I got to the exits and changed my mind. We watched the TD that put MD up 41-14 and I stormed out…

Pulling out of the parking lot-we heard our first score that put us to 21. I didn’t slow down. We drove around campus so I could show my girlfriend some important spots. I kept turning off the game and turning it right back on. We got to Hillsborough St. and the game was 41-28. Neither of us wanted to get out of the truck. Then it was 41-35. At that point we went looking for a bar to watch the game. Got to Brick Yard Grill when it was 41-42. Got to watch the rest of the game with another group of fans that left the game.

Went directly to the flag pole in the brickyard after the game. Proudly held up my ticket stubs for pictures as I read the words I already committed to memory…. Its not always the fastest nor the strongest that wins the race but the one who thinks he can…

Packfan28 said “I never left. It was very similar to watching a car wreck or a building burn down. You know you should stop watching, but you just can’t.”

Though watching on TV with my wife, that’s exactly how I felt. She on the other hand, maintained steadfastly that we’ll come back and win this. I have been bitched at all season (and many seasons in a row) for being too negative so I just sat there and didn’t say anything. She was right of course but I was so pissed at how we had given the game away up to that point, I didn’t really enjoy the come back the way I normally would have and should have. Only the Wolfpack can make you feel like shissle even when they win. A great comeback but I’m pretty numb to this team and staff. I like consistency in my life.

I have never been one to leave early. all though i am one to bitch and moan in the stands as things go to shit (mostly during the CTC years rather than lately). When Glennon threw the pick six, its like something snatch me out of my seat against my will and I made my way toward the exits.

When i got to the gates that face the RBC center, all gates start closing. WTF!?!?!? They are actually locking us in the F-ing stadium???

Then some of the event staffers say there will be no re-entry passes given until 5 mins left in the 2nd qtr. I then walked over to the endzone and stood watching tbe game, standing next to someone else bitching and moaning.

just before halftime i made my way thru the exit and grabbed 3 reentry passes! As i sat down at the tail gate spot and started sucking down a busch light, i heard a kid behind me say “Daddy, can we go home now?”. I turned around at the kid who was probably 8 or so and said “I asked my dad that same question about 20 years ago, and i’m STILL here”.

Shortly thereafter the game starts (i’m in no way motivated to go back in, so i guzzle another beer) and i hear that UMD scored again. Damm. after that, something possessed me to grab another beer, stuff it in my pants, left the extra reentry passes on our table for anyone who had a change of heart, made my way back to section 30 row P, and began to open my beer and take my whippings. so glad things turned around.

Watching the game and texting to LH in the stands at the game. Told him at 41-14, nothing 28 straight points wouldn’t cure. Who knew.

I found some tickets in Section 31 on StubHub for cheap. I decided it was time to take my kids (10,8,5) to their first wolfpack football game ever. I also took my parents who haven’t been in 20 years since I was a student. The kids were having a blast even as we were getting beat. My Dad leaned over after they just scored to make it 41-14 and said, “It’s not looking too good”. Understatement of the year. I replied, “If it were any other team but Maryland, I would say we had zero chance. These guys are really not that good so there is a small glimmer of hope” We stayed and it was incredible. I saw my kids go from casual observers to true Wolfpack fans in 1.5 quarters of ball. We were screaming and dancing and yelling “PACK” as loud as we could during the stadium chants. The next day, my girls were telling everyone where they were on Saturday and the joy on their faces as they exclaimed how we came back to win just melted my heart.

So yeah, I know we should have never let them get so far ahead. On the other hand, winning in such dramatic fashion provided me and my children a memory we will never ever forget. So thank you TOB and all the players for providing such a spectacular game for this diehard (and now plus 3 more) Wolfpack fan(s)!! I couldn’t have asked for a better first game for my kids to be a part of.

Stayed for the whole thing. Normally leave at half for a few beers but decided to stay during halftime thinking that i would be leaving shortly after. Knew we were going to win when Earl Wolff intercepted MD. go pack!

    ^^^^VAWOLF,

Thanks. only thing i’m wishing for now is the EDIT button so i could go in and fix some of the grammatical errors! oh well, i’m sure everyone gets the point.

Something about that kid so innocently asking “daddy can we go home now?” just really got me. boy does that kid not know what he is in for….haha

Was sitting at home on the coach watching the game until Maryland scored to make it 41-14. I blarred some obscenties, started flipping channels between Wisconsin/Penn State, Goergia/Georgia Tech then UVA/VATEH. I love rivalry weekend. Turned my receiver to pack radio and listened to Gary, Johnny and Tony. Never once did I turn the TV back to the game, even when we started the comeback.

I’m still in shock over what our football team and our men’s basketball team has accomplished in the last 2 weeks.

    GO PACK!!!

  21. pack76 11/28/2011 at 9:41 PM #

Stuck in Virginia all weekend but watched the entire game on TV. Not backed out in Va. I was discusted the entire first half and was yelling at the T.V., stomping around the house and my good wife kept telling me to “not give up!” So, we stayed with it and was so surprised and thrilled to see the Pack come back the way they did. The greatest Pack comeback I had see before this was in the 70’s when State was down to Va. 0 – 21 and came back in the 4th quarter to win 22-21! Congratulations to team and the coaches in this great win and a bowl.

  22. wolf_at_my_door 11/29/2011 at 1:34 PM #

I watched the whole game but at 41-14 I had a sense of calm and inevitability. How did we manage to fumble and intercept away this game to an awful Maryland team? How was T O’B going to explain away this? I texted a friend who was at the game, ” You’re not still watching that crap I hope?”. He was only because the weather was so beautiful.

After Meggett’s fumble I knew we were going to win. We stopped thinking and started playing. Sometimes the biggest foe is between your own ears.

I was watching a download of the game earlier this evening. If I had just been watching the game (and not doing other work as well), I probably would have jumped ahead or turned it off. I couldn’t bear to just watch it. Fortunately I was doing other stuff and decided to leave it on for background noise. After all, it was the last game of the season. Then they started scoring. I was glad I left it on. Crazy, awesome win.
