Where and When?

Please take heed – this is not a thread to bitch and moan about TOB coming back, or to bitch and moan about how most of us turned away in disgust at some point yesterday afternoon. Nay, tis a thread for Wolfpackers to share their stories of when and where they learned that NC State had in fact, somehow, someway – won that freaking game yesterday.

For me, I turned off the game at 21-7. I felt the nausea welling up in my gut, and I couldn’t put my special ladyfriend through another minute. Especially on a glorious sunny Outer Banks afternoon. So off to the dunes we went. She left her sunglasses in the hotel room, so while waiting, I flipped on the XM feed…and it was already 28-7. Game goes off immediately, and I swear not to even look anymore.

At about 5:20, I was on the way back from Corrolla, almost to Duck. Got a message from a friend saying “stuck in airport, did we beat MD??” I decided I should at least have the final score to report, so I pulled up ESPN’s college FB page…and did a literal spit-take. 56-41…STATE? No shit????

I honestly had no clue or hope until that moment. Given how none of my other Pack friends and family texted or e-mailed, I suspect many other SFN denizens have similar stories to share.

I actually watched the whole thing. When the comeback started in the second half, I envisioned the worst-possible-case scenario. I figured we’d manage to take the lead, 42-41, and then Maryland would end up winning on a long field goal by their backup kicker. Luckily it didn’t work out that way.

On a different note, Corrolla is a pretty place. Wish I could afford to stay there.

Ha, me too. I just stayed at the Hilton in Kitty Hawk.

Was in the stands – first game back in 20years. Wanted to leave and return to DC. Wife said, ok, one more series and then we go. Glad we stayed. Certainly was blessed with the right wife. That stadium was electric, and it certainly re-filled a good bit in 4th quarter.

Duck ain’t what it used to be. It used to be a way to get away from everything, Wild horses were left alone. Now it’s growing up like any other place.

I was watching on my laptop out here in the desert. When we scored to pull within a touchdown that’s when I knew we would win. I was certain of it. And I was right.

My idiot friend who holds our tickets left at halftime. Idiot!! He missed the greatest comeback in NC State history. And it was to defeat a bugaboo. And to gain bowl eligibility. Idiot!!!

Also, a friend, who is a girl back in Raleigh was texting me. She started watching the game just was we started mounting our comeback. She also went to the Clumpson game. I now consider her our good luck charm. She’s a Jersey broad with the big hair and everything. But she is our good luck charm. Sweet!

I was in front of the TV, resigned to watch the whole stinkin’ mess. Despite seeing the comeback, it was not until Wilson’s pick six with 27 seconds to go that I was confident of a win.

Normally I’d chide any alum who walked away, but vacation always comes first, especially with a ladyfriend.

Watching in real-time, the remarkable thing was how quickly the game went from “complete Maryland blowout, we have no chance” down 41-14, to “we will inevitably win” after we recovered the fumble deep in Maryland territory shortly after scoring to make it 41-28. From that point you could just see Maryland deflate.

Lots of credit to the coaching staff for dealing with adversity that was not of their doing (James Washington’s fumble – WTF?) and coming up with a good game plan to win it. Going for it on 4th and 12 around midfield in the 3rd quarter, and making it, was the call of the game.

Love that we gave Yow the game ball. Just trolling the shit out of Maryland.

And this tweet from a Maryland player post-game: “That’s the worst shit I’ve ever been involved with in my entire fucking life…” just warms my very soul.

I live in Arlington Texas so the game started at 11:30am central time. I had the computer set up so we could see it on the TV. My wife is an VT fan and has seen me live and die with the “Terrors” wolfpack. She was hoping the Pack would win so I would be in a good mood for the next couple of days. When Glennon fumbled and then Washington fumbled (dropped) the ball I was singing the blues. When Maryland went up 21-0 God interviened in our circumstances. The transformer for our house blew-up. Our neighbor’s tree fell on it and our power went out. So, I went to doing my Saturday chores fixing the shower in our bathroom. My wife took the kids to Target to do some shopping. After doing some chores I layed down on the couch and ruminated about the pack and how up and down they have been this year. It was 3pm our time when the power came back on. When I turned the computer back on I first saw the Maryland score 41 and I groaned and sat back. Then I looked at the “Terrors” score and looked at it for a few seconds wondering if I was seeing it correctly. When it set in that the Pack had 42 points and that there was 5 minutes to go in the game I felt sick to my stomach. I just knew we would lose it by a last second field-goal. A few moments later Bryan catches a TD pass and puts us up by 8 points and now I know we will go into overtime and lose it that way. Then the defense intercepts the pass and the game ends. I sit there and wonder how we will lose the game now. We have to lose this game. There is no way we can come back and win this game. I called my wife who was still shopping and told her Maryland scored 41 points. She asked with a sad voice how many points State had scored? I told her 56 and she stared screaming and about ran off the road. We must call them the “Terrors” because they have terrorized me in how they play the game. My hat is off to them and to the coaching staff. It was unbelievable!

I made it to 41-14, quietly (since evryone was napping) and not surprised at the outcome. Went
To the next room to upload some angry music for a run, got distracted by a shiny object. That’s when I heard the two TDs. Decided to keep watching.

I’m thankful for shiny objects, kept me from punting and going for a run. I hate running. Hell of a game!

Mid way through the 3rd trailing 41-14 I was feeling absolutely sick from the sight of what my eyed were beholding. I got up and was walking toward the exit across from the RBC when I heard the resulting cheer go up after we scored. That little voice aka (the ghost of Jimmy V) suggested I find a good place to stand for the next 17 minuets. So glad I listened. Never Give Up… @Out_OnALimb

In Afghanistan and was trying to watch game streaming on ESPN3. I wasn’t getting a very good feed, it was about 11:00 at night and when MD got up 21-7 I gave up. I felt certain this would be a repeat of BC.

While eating breakfast the next morning and watching the news on AFN in the chow hall, I noticed NC STATE highlighted in yellow at the streamer across the bottom of the screen. I wasn’t quick enough to catch the score, so I began to question if the winner or loser was highlighted. I immediately logged onto a computer and went directly to SFN for the score.

One thing about being a State fan is that every game is exciting. It seems it doesn’t matter who we play, the game is always in question to the bitter end.

ruffles31: Thank you for your duty in Afghanistan. Be safe. And thanks for logging onto SFN first.

I learned at the Marshall game in the early 90’s never to leave early, but in this case we were at our 2nd Thanksgiving, so in the range of 35-14 or so (or was it 41?) I went out to play corn hole. (On a Carolina and Duke split game! The Horror!) I have push notifications on ESPN sports center set up, and felt the phone buzz a couple times, but decided not to look. When the corn hole game was over, I finally checked and saw 41-35, so I went back in, turned the TV back on, just in time to see the score for 41-41 plus the extra point. I watched the rest while splitting time… I also felt like, the life of an NCSU fan being what it is, MD would score the last points to win. But every once in a while, we pull it out, which keeps us hanging on and on… :-/

Missed the first half.. it was too beautiful on the beach. Barefoot, no shirt and in the water up to my knees. Came in to the second half was watching with my hole fan brother.. they score 41-14. I go back out and brother says ‘its not over’. I said wake me up when we scor 2 TDs. It wasn’t long and there are 12 minutes left, we have the ball and we are down by 6.
Good thing I DVRd the game at home.

I got on a plane in Ontario, CA… the last I saw was that we were down 28-14 at halftime after “following” the game via ScoreMobile, Twitter, and texting friends through the first half.

I powered up my Blackberry & ScoreMobile as SOON as we landed in Dallas… blinked twice… showed the wife the score… we both just kind of had a “holy shit” moment, especially looking at the score by quarter. 35-0 in the 4th? Holy shit indeed.

Watched the comeback on ESPN3 when I got home… hate that Clemson & this one were the two I missed this year, but family calls sometimes…

I live in a different part of the world, so it was night time when the game was on. I followed the game online on a video feed provided by a PackPride poster, supplemented with the ESPN gamecast when the feed stalled. I stopped paying attention at 41-14. Before I went to bed around 10:30 my time, I happened to see the score one more time and saw it was 41-21. So what? It doesn’t matter, this game’s over.

When I woke up this morning, I checked my email as I do every morning and saw a message from the Wolfpack Club about bowl ticket purchase options.

    Bowl tickets!?

    Wha?

We aren’t going to any bowl with a 6-6 record and the FBS teams on our schedule. Either that was some typical NC State boneheaded mistake made by sending that out, or we made a comeback of epic proportions. Checking the score confirmed the latter and gave me a great start to the day.

  16. Wolfacct 11/27/2011 at 9:12 AM #

Left the stadium and went to the car at halftime for some food and beers. At that point, I felt we had a chance, knowing we got the ball first in the third quarter. After MD scored to go up 41-14, I told my wife that if we scored on our next possession that we’d go back in to our seats. Thanks goodness we didn’t leave. Most amazing comeback I’ve ever seen.

  17. MattN 11/27/2011 at 9:16 AM #

On the way back from the in-laws, I turned the game off at 28-7.

“Absolutely typical!!!!” I shouted, and was in a FOUL mood the rest of the trip. We can beat #7 in the country, but we can’t beat the worst Maryland team in living memory. This shits been going on since Mike O’Shame.

I spent the rest of the afternoon raking and mowing and cursing, the last one for the year (the raking and mowing, not the cursing. I am after all an NCSU fan). I decide after I shower to check the final score on ESPN because I had a morbid curiosity and I swore they had the score flipped, or the score of some other game up for State/Maryland. I hit Pack Pride to confirm/deny.

2 miricles in a week. That’s all we get for the next century…

Only the second time I can ever recall leaving early. The other was the Matt Blundin (sp?) fiasco with Virginia back in the 1990s where they KILLED us. After our second straight 3 and out to start the second half and Glennon missing a 10 yard pass by 3 yards, I couldn’t take it any more. 41-14. Heard our 20 and 21st points on the way up Youth Center Drive to the camper. Took until 41-35 to get the dishes washed, camper hooked to the truck, etc. Go ahead touchdown while heading west on I-40.

I’m sorry I missed it in person, but looking back, there’s absolutely no excuse for the PITIFUL performance up to that point.

Twas in Winston at the Wake/Vandy game with friends and family. Caught some of the comeback on the radio while tailgating, then followed espn on the phone in the stadium. Provided Wake’s ineptitude against James Franklin’s Commodores, our comeback was the talk in the stadium. All were saying what a jekyl and hyde team we are, and how we are so very dangerous when we want to be. Some knowledgeable fans. I’ll never forget it.

  20. Ed89 11/27/2011 at 9:29 AM #

When we scored our 2nd TD of the 3rd quarter to make it 41-28, I thought we’d win it. I knew we’d score 2 TD’s in the 4th. We scored 4 to win by 15…love it.

  21. tuckerdorm1983 11/27/2011 at 9:38 AM #

I was sitting in section 22 row HH. There were people walking out close to half time. The fellow next to me said “I have leaves that need raking at home and he left, never to return”. When MD came out after the half and scored another TD the stands began to empty. People were booing.
With 10:41 to go in the 3rd quarter I turned to my brother and said “This will be a historic comeback”. He said “the score is a reverse number. 1-4 and 4-1.”
I looked across the field and saw the years of bowl appearances listed across the staduim, with the last one being 2010. I swear I could see 2011 up there.
I took my brother and his two boys. I said “I paid for these tickets and we are sitting here until it reads 00 in the 4th quarter”
People kept yelling “Tyler Brosius” sitting a few rows back.

  22. Rick 11/27/2011 at 9:38 AM #

I was at my wife’s family reunion.
They had the TV going so I watched some of the first half but once we went down 41-14 I went out back to play corn hole.
After a while someone said “it is 41-35” and so I went in to watch the rest. The whole time I was ready for NCSU to do something stupid and lose but they did not.

When I told one of the other State fans he did not believe me. He had to get confirmation from his son before he really believed it.

  23. WolfInVolCountry 11/27/2011 at 9:51 AM #

I was changing a water pump on my son’s car when the game started. My phone was set to continually update with ESPN. I check it regularly all through the first quarter and a half, but then gave up. Every time it beeped I said F. Was working in the kitchen with about 6 min left and checked… said Holy S and turned on ESPN3… to a FRIGGIN BLACKOUT. Could not find any other feed, so I had to keep updated via a game tracker. You know how much that sucks? Happy for the Pack though! Was hoping the would get the Vols in Nashville, but that is not happening.

I wonder if TOB took the “PLAY TROUGH” page outta Gottfried’s book?

I was ready to leave when the Turds made it 41-14. So proud of this team. Encouraging to see George & JR hold that team meeting on the sideline, that’s when things got flowing!

  25. MISTA WOLF 11/27/2011 at 9:58 AM #

I was in Clark Griswold mode, kicking crap left and right. I muted the game at halftime and began drinking heavily to some 90’s alternative while waiting for my fiancée to arrive. Evenflow came on during the 4th quarter stretch where the football team looked like a perennial top 5 squad. I was acting like a fool stomping around the house. I got drunk, we won and got to go out in public for dinner. Life is good.
