The Colors of Carter-Finley

While attending the last few Wolfpack home football games I couldn’t help but notice how attractive (and green) the Carter-Finley Stadium grass/turf looked.

Then I watched the DVR replays of the UNC-CH, Clemson and Maryland games and couldn’t believe how great both the field looked…as well as the general colors of the uniforms, fans in the stands, etc looked (particularly with ABC’s High Definition in the Clemson game). I don’t think I’ve ever seen Carter-Finley look so good.

So, when I ran across the following video today I thought it was very timely to share.

While you are here…please take some time to review some of the dozens of timely conversations we’ve got going on in our message forums. It is a very active time right now and there is a lot to discuss in the world of NC State and the entire sports world.

I’m just glad they finally got the kerning right on the lettering so it doesn’t say WOLFP ACK anymore!

That’s funny because I too distinctly remember watching the HD ABC broadcast of our game and thinking, damn our field is legit.

Field looks great, but still when I think of the football field I picture it brown in my mind from when we had what I believe was bermuda grass for years. Didn’t we have the field painted for TV a couple of times before we changed the field out to a different grass?

I also thought how good the field looked last weekend, especially being the end of the season… On a side note, is the guy on the video chewing tobacco???

Pretty cool. If you’re a homeowner who cares about his yard, there is no finer a resource than the NCSU Turf Files website (http://www.turffiles.ncsu.edu/).

The field is cared for by some of the finest turf guys in the the country.NCSU was voted the #1 turf school in the country a couple years ago.I have work in the turf research field for 25yrs(1981 GRAD) and have worked with many of the guys in N.C.State’s turf program. The field a CF was renovated a couple years ago and regraded, new drainage, soil brought in,sodded with hybrid bermuda, and a new irrigation system. The field is very green now because it was overseeded with perennial ryegrass(cool season grass for winter)as the bermuda slowly goes dormant in early fall. They over seed in late Sept.or early Oct.when the team is away for a couple weeks so the seed can germinate without be disturbed ,so when the bermudagrass slowly turns brown the seeded grass greens up to made a beautiful transition in the fall. N.C.State is World Renowned in turf research. NCSU has one of this finest Turf Centers for teaching students and working with Industry that I have ever seen.

That is really cool stuff you don’t see everyday. The field does look really good.

In the wise words of Carl Spackler:

“It’s a hybrid of Kentucky bluegrass, featherbed bent and northern California sinsemilla. You can play 36 holes on it in the afternoon, then take it home and just get stoned to the bejeezus.”

I have a number of years of color-theory experience in my background, so the segment above regarding the appearance of the painted turf was like old home week. Used to love being able to get on the field postgame for a variety of reasons; among them was just walking on that great turf…
