State @ BC Game Thread – HUGE game for TOB (Semi-live blog)

Make no mistakes about the importance of today’s visit to Chestnut Hill for NC State — this is a HUGE game for the Wolfpack and still embattled Head Coach, Tom O’Brien.

Not only is TOB still looking for his first Atlantic Division road win (not on the season, but in his five-year tenure), but a loss today puts us in the precarious position of needing to beat both Clemson (the best team in the ACC and who we haven’t beaten since 2003) and our bugaboo Maryland for bowl eligibility (keep in mind, with two I-AA games, we need seven wins this season). Hopefully we’re not caught looking back to last week’s victory, because a win at Chestnut Hill today and State has some breathing room (albeit, not much), but it also keeps us in a position to match last season’s nine wins.

A little added pressure to the situation is that Boston College is just a bad team. The Eagles sit at 2-7 overall and only 1-5 in the ACC. If Coach O’Brien cannot exorcise his road woes in this set-up while battling his familiar former program then it is a fair question for NC State fans to ask if he will EVER be able to break through.

Dave from Carter-Finley has more preview here.

TOB’s record in Atlantic Division road games is 0-12. No, that is not a typo. In 5 years as NC State head coach TOB has yet to win on the road in our division in 12 games. I think any random person could take a team and accidentally win one game in 12 tries. A mind boggling stat for sure, but one that TOB needs to put an end to this Saturday against BC if 1) he wants to make a bowl game and 2) he wants to return as NC State football coach next year. Boston College is not a tough place to play so we have to find a way to get the job done.

Please feel free to use the comments below during the game for discussion. Additionally, we’ve got a lot of different topics being discussed in the SFN Message Forums and we’d welcome your input!

SEMI-LIVE BLOG
1st, 12:57 BC 7-0: In front of a (very) partial sell-out on Senior Day, Boston College opens with a bruising 5-play, 66-yard drive for a 7-0 lead 2:03 into the game. The key play was a 41-yard completion on a fade route where Amidon broke to the sideline and C.J. Wilson broke towards the hashes.

1st, 5:22 BC 7-3: State responds with a nice drive that stalled out in the red zone, settles for a field goal. The key play seems like the 2nd-and-1 where a shot at the end zone made sense, but instead it was a rush for a loss of four.

1st, 1:13 BC 7-3: Amerson picks off Rettig on the one. Amerson’s 10th pick on the season.

2nd, 9:20 BC 7-3: I’m not sure anything has happened in a while. Apparently BC just missed a field goal.

Look at the ACC Network trying to fabricate crowd excitement today. The cameras at this game are using limiting sticks — similar to the ones machine gunners use so they maintain their fields of fire — so that the cameras don’t pan beyond the small pockets of crowd.

2nd, 1:40 BC 14-3: *Yawn*

Halftime, BC 14-3. Business as usual for TOB on the road. A few more trips to Chestnut Hill and he’ll bring his all time record there to .500. At the half, State has racked up a daunting 88 total yards, with an entire four of those rushing. On 12-of-17 passing for 84 yards, Glennon continues to do the bare minimum on the season to remain “serviceable.”

Key stat of the first half: State’s defense can’t get off the field; BC is 4-for-5 on 3rd down.

3rd, 12:39 BC 14-3: State opens the second half with complete pass for no gain, two-yard run, false start, 12-yard pass on 3rd-and-13, punt. Wash, rinse, repeat.

3rd, 7:18 BC 14-10: State successfully executes a forward pass (beyond the chains no less) in order to move the ball downfield, and then Washington completes the drive with positive ground yardage for a TD.

3rd, 6:12 BC 14-10: State forces a three-and-out and then that Jason Aldean crap take us to commercial. Flip over to ESPNU and you’ll see the ACC’s best coach putting Wake Forest in control of the Atlantic Division, 28-14 late in the 3rd. It could still end up Virginia vs. Wake Forest in Charlotte.

3rd, 4:56 BC 14-10: State has another three-and-out followed by another shitty punt.

3rd, 3:22 BC 14-10: BC a quick three-and-out. Two good plays in a row by Wolff; even a blind squirrel…

3rd, 2:21 BC 14-10: Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V.

On the bright side, today we’re already above our average of 6.5ppg for the past two games.

End 3rd, BC 14-10: Ol’ Ty-rell Manning with the big sack to end the quarter. State holds BC to a total of zero yards in the quarter. Fight through the drowsiness, just 15 more minutes. Meanwhile, Wake still leads 28-21 as the 4th begins.

“quacko” asked me the following question: Why would you pass rush when he can’t complete anything anyway? If any of y’all know the answer, please post it in the comments below.

Under nine to play and we finally see a rush of yardage > 1. Washington breaks loose into the open field for an 8-yard gain. Promptly followed the next play by a personal foul.

4th, 6:44 BC 14-10: Glennon kills another drive with a pick in the end zone. First time he’s thrown downfield since his last interception. Consistency is the key. This answers the question: why do we always throw underneath?

4th, 4:27 BC 14-10: State gets the ball back quickly, and probably for the last time. This game is brought to you by Bojangle’s, who may be questioning their sponsorhip of ACC football.

Undamnbelievable. After a 3rd-and-nine underneath pass, the drive is kept alive only because it was tipped at the line and, well, let’s face it, otherwise it would’ve been a pick.

4th, 1:17 BC 14-10: Timeout State before a huge 3rd down after throwing underneath again on 2nd-and-10.

Meanwhile, Clemson ties it late.

Sack. Another timeout. 4th down coming to keep this crap alive.

The 6’6″ QB once again has his pass batted down at the line. BC wins. Just for clarity, BC had a single yard in the 2nd half before going into Victory Formation.

NCStateShit at its finest. Feel free to meltdown in the comments below.

Luckily, I had to leave at halftime to attend a funeral. Just sad it wasn’t for this pitiful excuse of a team.

We still have a chance. Wake almost got Clemson. Maybe we can

i really hate to be one of those guys but there’s just no excuse for this loss. this team doesn’t deserve to go to a bowl after that loss i dont care if they win out they still dont deserve it. this team lacks play makers on offense including the quarter back. he is average at best imo. he has no ability to make a play and the icing on the cake is that he is 6’7″ yet has more pass tipped than rw. it’s like the kid is throwing from his hip or something…

I would like to say I was at least somewhat surprise by this outcome today. But I wasn’t … At all.

    State.

We deserve this. For years all we cared about was beating UNC and now that’s all we’re good for. But those wins mean nothing when they just turn around and kick our butts in basketball. Oh and win national championships while they’re at it. Get ready because it looks like another one is coming.

The folks who keep scheduling us against Maryland in the season football finale sure know what they hell they’re doing!

I’m done!!!1 i will not be at the next two games!!! This is rediculous!!! We can’t prepare for the worst team in the league!!! This coaching staff has got to go!!!!

  8. old13 11/12/2011 at 7:27 PM #

TOB says the team is immature! BC was across the board younger. What BS! I’ve had it with the lame excuses. If he can’t accept responsibility and address the issues, the hell with him, marine or no. Sure doesn’t fit the Marine MO IMO!!

    Dr. Yow

Against all logic, my wife and I retain our LTRs despite not having lived in Raleigh since 2004 (stops in TN, FL, and now CT).  We have friends that buy the tickets, and we typically return to NC for one game each year.  I graduated in ’98 and she in ’99, and we have been in the Wolfpack Club since we entered the workforce.

If a change is not made with this football staff, I cannot justify continuing to subsidize the program.

I contemplated taking my six year old boy to see the Pack play Boston College this weekend, as we are just a short drive from Chestnut Hill.  In retrospect, I’m glad my prescient vision of yet another poor performance (with so much on the line) persuaded me to take him hiking instead.  It was a gorgeous day in New England.

It stinks to have such little faith in our program.  Today i felt like I was depriving my child of the joys of watching great, spirited college sports, just as I was able to enjoy as a youngster growing up in Lexington, Va and Clemson, SC.  But I just could not stand the thought of watching us mail in another terrible effort, as has been so routine the last five years.

I have confidence you will fix this mess.  Thanks for all you are doing

How can this coaching staff continue to throw the players under the bus? Immature????

Anyone want to predict the excuse next week?

Hey TOB, it is the coaching. Always has been. Immature is not a good excuse against another immature team such as BC.

A chance for Glennon to pull out a win late and he wasn’t quite up to the task because of crap play calling and an offensive line that couldn’t block a good high school team. Let’s see, a screen pass call might work. Oh, and how about a swing pass to a back after a brush block. At least they got the tight end involved this week. Our defense, while not great, played good enough to win. A win against Clemson won’t happen. I will be surprised if we stay within 24 points of the tiggers. A win against Maryland is questionable given State’s less than stellar performances against the Terps in recent years. UMD has some real problems in their lockroom right now but some how State will manage to keep the turtles in the game. This football program is stagnant, stuck in the mud, mediocre, below average, pick your term. O’Cain couldn’t beat the Heels. O’Brien beats UNC five in arow but can’t keep it going against the other also rans in the conference. Enough of this. Time for someone else take the reins and get this program moving past just one decent season every 5 to 7 years.

  12. st8family 11/12/2011 at 9:40 PM #

Amazing how things come full circle. TOB’s job is riding on Glennon’s arm and he throws a pick in the end zone. A fitting end to the TOB era (and he knows it).

  13. mak4dpak 11/12/2011 at 9:43 PM #

Bad pass by Glennon on the wouldbe TD, but RW did that at WF his last visit there. So if the team was not ready after the big win over UNX, it all falls on the coaching staff, sure the kids are immature, but as the coaches (adults), they are to make sure the team doesn’t have such let downs. Didn’t happen. Wouldn’t surprise me if we upset Clemson at home next week, but that would not change my feelings on the TOB era. Let it be done. Ready for some new blood. Younger guy with experience and charisma, much like the Cincy coach, who will take it upon himself to take us to the next level, and nothing less will be satisfactory. Where are you at? WE NEED YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. mak4dpak 11/12/2011 at 9:47 PM #

Lest I forget, the defense although shaky in the 1st half, did show up in the 2nd, just wish the offense could show up.

  15. tuckerdorm1983 11/12/2011 at 10:44 PM #

    wait til next year

  16. GoldenChain 11/12/2011 at 10:49 PM #

I can’t WTNY! We get these injured kids back + the addition of the top-notch recruits. We’ll kick tail and take names then……

  17. Ashman87 11/12/2011 at 11:14 PM #

Any way we can get Dick Sheridan on the sideline for the Clemson game? (I’m not joking.)

  18. mak4dpak 11/12/2011 at 11:24 PM #

Surely GoldenChain is joking on WTNY comment. 5 years and nothing different, with different players. 6 years won’t mean anything different, unless TOB is gone. Even lowly Duke was able to win at Chestnut Hills. Thanks Fowler, you are gone, but we are still paying for your fowlups.

  19. Ashman87 11/13/2011 at 12:31 AM #

Hey Stillapackfan, I was talking to a couple of N.C. State students who I know after the UNC game and I asked them if State students would rather beat UNC in football more or beat UNC in basketball more. Both of them said football because it’s more in the culture at the school today. I bring this up for two reasons. Reason #1 is that it means that there are some people who believe that the wins over UNC mean A LOT (which they do to a degree). Reason #2 is that it really shows how much the value of basketball has fallen at our proud university among those younger than 25. Even UNC fans were surprised about what I told them because they said that for a school to have a tradition including Case, Valvano, Sloan, Shavlik, Thompson, Burleson, Towe, Lowe, Fire and Ice, and others, basketball should be valued higher by the students at State.

  20. Ashman87 11/13/2011 at 12:35 AM #

I would like for Mark to talk to the students about how great a basketball tradition we have at State so that basketball would be more valued.

  21. Wufpacker 11/13/2011 at 3:31 AM #

^^ If any of those you named had been around during the current students’ lifetimes then maybe they would feel differently. The only real connection they have to that era is the coaching prowess of Sid over the past five years. Sheeesh, can you blame them?

Given the marginal (at best) success in football during those same students’ lives, I have to conclude that I feel very sorry for current students and younger alumni.

    Today is email writing day.

  23. WestCoast 11/13/2011 at 8:35 AM #

Today is email day indeed. TOB has to make some changes and fast on the staff, or he’s gone. Archer’s D has shown up the last two games…but that’s it really. Bible’s offense has never really showed up, especially the last three games scoring a whopping 23 points the last three games. Dr. Yow hasn’t been one to sit on her hands, I’m sure she’ll be sending the pressure come 11/27.

  24. mak4dpak 11/13/2011 at 9:09 AM #

    Bring on the PRESSURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
