Wood and De Thaey would have really helped. Not getting into early foul trouble would have really helped. Other than letting Jenkins get that 3 point shot off near the end, I liked most everything I saw. This team is much tougher. Both mentally and physically. We “could” be good by the end of the year. I am really liking what I’m seeing. Vandy is a good team. They are very experienced. We are still learning a new system. I like our chances vs. them in the NCAAT!!

“And to repeat, you will ruin your enjoyment of watching this team develop if you put expectations on them and judge by future bubble status, etc. ”

Agreed, Lowe left us in a hole and crawling out is a process. Watch the games, enjoy the small things we never did before, know that is appears we are heading in the right direction and be happy with positive results.

Not judging them by future bubble status. I love watching this team. I am simply stating a fact, and I truly believe Gott can get this team in a position where an NCAA berth is a real possibility. I am already enjoying this season more than any other in recent memory.

Oh well. Tough loss. I think we are a pretty darn good basketball team. Definitely top half of ACC. My guess is we will be a high seed NCAA team.

  5. tractor57 11/19/2011 at 9:20 PM #

Already I like this team. Hard play, lots of hustle and the staff has been able to mold a group of individuals into a team. In terms of being a savvy team they are still inexperienced but with this much improvement in the off season I can see the potential of a very good by ACC tourney time. Back to back they have played two very good teams and looked pretty darn good in both games.

More importantly to me when I watch them play I actually see something that looks much like basketball.

More work to be done and I’ll not even venture a guess on a tourney invite at this point but for the first time in years I enjoy watching the games.

Totally agree Howler, really enjoying watching them play. They played well against a very good, experienced, well coached team. In the post game Gott said he thought had we played the end of the game as well as the first 37 mins, we would have won.
    I can’t wait for Monday.

Is the Texas/Oregon State game on the same website?

  8. Howler 11/19/2011 at 9:28 PM #

Are we sure Howell and Painter were on the team last year?

  9. ncsu1987 11/19/2011 at 9:31 PM #

Wow, what an outstanding game! The effort and the team chemistry were unreal. Considering that we’re still down two likely starters, I have to say I’m ecstatic with the performance. Coach G and this team rock!

Thanks Rick et al. Missed bc of fb game but a good read. I read no train wreck.

Never could get the ESPN3 feed to work right. It kept locking up and when it would play it was very grainy.
What I did see looked like we really could have used Scott tonight. The D will get better and keep in mind none of these guys have ever played D before. We do have to shoot better from the line. No excuse for that.

  12. SaccoV 11/19/2011 at 10:05 PM #

Not having Wood against a team that hits their open 3s was tough. Effort was clearly there all night from all the guys. Missed free throws were problematic, but slightly expected. This team is much, much closer to being NCAA ready than Lowe’s teams. I’m hoping this effort and intensity can be consistent … if so, then we’ll in the 66 (or whatever).

I was optimistic the first year of Les. I was optimistic the first year of HWSNN. I was optimistic when he took us to ACC champ games, and I always hoped he could somehow get over that hump. I was optimistic at the end of Lowe’s first year, and I always wanted the light to kick on there as well.
Well, I’m optimistic now. But after 20 years of emotional devastation, I’m just too terrified to say it.
In the limited stretches and highlights I’ve seen, it looks like Gott has instilled some basic fundamentals that I didn’t remember existed in Wolfpack BBall. Go Pack. I might even bring my battered heart out of its lockbox.

Sorry I missed the game, but appears from what I hear that we gave Vandy all it could handle, and that, without our full compliment of players. Excited about what is taking place under Gott’s coaching and leadership. We are definitely on the way up!

  15. coach13 11/19/2011 at 10:55 PM #

Glad every1 is optimistic as am I. Full complement of players and few more games we will be a handful for alot of teams.

  16. packalum44 11/19/2011 at 11:55 PM #

At the game. We are as good as Vandy. They hit the 3 ball tonight. We didint hit the free throw. Close game. Could point to lots of things, but I’d say free throws decided the game. We are a dancing team. Whether you want to be a cynic is your choice.

Oregon State won the nightcap, so we will get to see Rick Barnes and his Longhorns again. Hopefully with a much better result than last time!

44rules: This time it is different. I know it is. Lowe took a team his first year that was well coached, but held back by that crappy Princeton offense. Ingin Astur was a great floor leader.
Gott is a proven quantity. His methods are proven. Hell we almost beat a seasoned team returning 5 starters that will surely be in the sweet 16 come march. It was tied with 3 mins to go. Several times we got down by 8 and came roaring back. Wow. We are still putting the pieces together. Wood comes back by the time we start ACC play. This team travels to the NIT and makes waves. If we catch a few breaks (no more injuries), we will be dancing.
Calvin needs to learn to play the post.

“I might even bring my battered heart out of its daytight compartment.”

    Fixed…

  20. TheAliasTroll 11/20/2011 at 11:11 AM #

The defensive intensity was severely lacking last night. Something to keep an eye on going forward.

    Offensively we looked like great.

  21. Texpack 11/20/2011 at 12:22 PM #

We have to WIN these games, or at least some of them to make the dance. Until then it’s same old same old. Even if we look better, RESULTS are all that matter.

  22. Thinkpack17 11/20/2011 at 12:46 PM #

Not a stretch to say we look like a tourny team. More importantly, for me at least, it looks like there won’t be a distinct point in every game where you see the loss coming. In this game and in the Princeton game there were times early in the 2nd half when we were down 8 or 9 and could have gone away but fought back. I think we will be able to watch this team without that feeling of impending doom. At Clemson last year even when we were up 20 points we all knew it would go south. I think this staff will allow me to watch a game without looking over my shoulder…that’s enough for me. For now.

Tucker, I sincerely hope, pray, and give burnt offerings to Yahweh that you are right. When I stand back and try to be objective, I see things that, in retrospect, weren’t there in the previous Pack iterations. For example, Howell springs a trap, steals the ball and thunders down for a dunk. We actually sprung a trap on D. That’s a big turnaround from us dribbling into the corner, picking up our dribble, and waiting to be trapped – the go-to move of every PG since Corchiani. (Well, maybe Ishua Benjamin didn’t do that, but he was more of a scoring guard anyways.)
After made baskets, we shoot the ball out to the PG and he actually runs toward our basket on the other end of the court. Previously, I could get up, get a beer and get back to the couch before we even inbounded the ball. Those are just two fundamentals that I noticed.

  24. wolfpack4ever 11/20/2011 at 4:05 PM #

I feel very good about the direction of this team. Significant changes and trends are already evident. I don’t feel the “impending doom” for this team that has been present for the last 15 years of HWSNBN and SL.

    Go Pack!

  25. lawful 11/21/2011 at 12:42 PM #

Rick & BJD, I disagree. In bball, I don’t think there is any place in building for the future. You win now with what you have. You look at this team and figure out how you’re getting to the NCAAT. Do you think Calipari builds anything? He’s dealing w/3 or 4 new starters every year. We should be able to win now! The cupboard is not bare. Most of these guys are very highly rated and have the ability to win now. So what if this is a new system? They’ve played bball all their lives against some of these very same players. They’ve adapted w/each new league and new team they’ve played on in the past. Why should this be any different? No excuses, win now. This team is more than capable of beating quality non-conference opponents and carrying a .500+ ACC record. We’ve grown accustomed w/accepting far less and it should stop now.
