Princeton – Gottfried can start ‘taking it back’ for the Pack

SFN just tweeted

Fired up about another opp’t 2 watch NC State play basketball! Ball movement! Rebounding! Hustle! Dribble penetration! #realbasketball

…and we couldn’t agree more! I haven’t been this excited about watching basketball since Sidney Lowe’s first season and the beginning of his second season.

After the Wolfpack defeated Morehead State on Sunday night Head Coach Mark Gottfried made a statement that I thought crystallized my feelings — “I like the way we are playing the game”.

AMEN to that! If you haven’t seen the Pack play yet, then you haven’t seen the dribble penetration from quick guards; the excellent dishing and passing from everyone; an offense that moves without the ball; a tenacity for rebounding and outlet passes; and general energy and hustle that has been missing from our program for a very long time.

The Wolfpack plays host to Princeton tonight in Raleigh at 7pm on ESPNU. The Tigers are the third consecutive NCAA Tournament team from last year that NC State has faced to open the 2011-2012 season. Princeton opened this season with a 73-57 home loss to Wagner that saw Junior Ian Hummer, score a game-high 19 points and nine points. Last season, Hummer averaged 13.8 points per game and 6.8 rebounds per game.

From a historical context this game actually means something to me. You won’t believe this….but NC State is friggin 1-5 All-Time against Princeton.

I am an ‘old school’ NC State fan that remembers how wonderful it was to have a ‘long-term’ successful program that could match its records against anyone else in the country and come out looking great. For example…consider the following —

In 1988, there were only a handful of programs against which NC State had an all-time losing record. Of that handful, NC State had an all-time losing record against only THREE programs that we had played more than five times — North Carolina, Notre Dame and Kansas. However, the Herb Sendek and Sidney Lowe era significantly changed that (once fantastic) dynamic for our program. Today, NC State has an all-time losing record against a much larger number of overall programs…and – after Sendek and Lowe’s regime – the Wolfpack has added Maryland, Boston College, Alabama, West Virginia, and PRINCETON to the list of programs against which we have an all-time losing record with five or more match-ups!!

Herb Sendek actually lost to Princeton TWICE while coaching NC State! Including a potentially blasphemous NIT loss to the Tigers in his fourth year as coach in what would have been ‘the last game in the history of Reynolds Coliseum’ if we had not started scheduling ‘Heritage Games’ in the Old Barn.

So, you can see what I am getting at with Coach Gottfried and his new start — I want to start taking BACK our all-time records against a lot of the programs that have taken advantage of us the last 20 years. Oddly enough, Princeton is one of those programs. After we beat the Tigers tonight, I hope that we make Princeton an annual fixture on our schedule for the five to seven years and put an exclamation on another piece of our historical record book.

If you want a detailed preview then by all means click here.

Last season was the culmination of Sydney Johnson’s reclamation project at Princeton, or so he must have felt, anyway, since he moved on to Fairfield during the offseason.

Johnson’s rebuilding efforts worked quickly, as the program went from six wins in his first season to 13 in his second, 22 in his third, and 25 in his fourth and final season. He decreased the team’s reliance on the three-pointer and built a defense predicated on solid interior play and defensive rebounding. They won the Ivy League in 2011 and almost upset Kentucky in the NCAA tournament.

They lost a couple of key contributors off that team, though–Dan Mavraides was an excellent outside shooter and a primary contributor. Kareem Maddox was the team’s best interior scorer, defensive rebounder, and shot blocker; he’ll be especially difficult to replace. But new Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green ’40 Head Coach (that’s what they call the position) Mitch Henderson has enough pieces to be competitive in the Ivy League, and Johnson left him plenty of size.

Henderson has spent his entire career coaching the Princeton style (he spent the last decade at Northwestern), and it remains to be seen if he makes the Tigers back into a perimeter-oriented team. Last year just 31% of their field goal attempts were threes, a proportion below NCAA average. This team isn’t really built to hoist up a lot of long-range shots–its go-to scorer attempted zero threes last season–and doesn’t have what one would call a diverse array of deep threats.

Outstanding win for this team. I’m stoked about the prospects for a solid season. We have a COACH! I really like our inside presence. I’m interested to see how Calvin’s role meshes with the team. I like what I see right now, and I just can’t take anymore attitude from Calvin. He deserves his chance with Gott, I just hope he has a new and improved attitude. The only negative tonight has to be the woeful outside shooting. Granted, no Wood. But we’ve got to pick it up in that category to go from good to really good. We are at least a top half ACC team today. Good win.

My other big take away from this game is the fact that the shot 0 took to win the game was a set, called play. He was open b/c no one expected him to shoot from there. Would have loved to save that for ACC play when we needed it, but glad to know this staff has vetted out those situations. My bet, it is not the only option they had from that “set”.

That play put everyone on notice that we have ain’t what we used to be.

    Thanks Gott.

this will go a long way in building confidence. I like what I see so far and look forward to more intense playing.

to quote the Eagles’ Hotel California: “We haven’t seen that spirit here since 1964 (1983)”

Wulfpack, I think part of the attitude last year (team in general not just Leslie) stemmed from never having to “earn PT”. It started out of necessity when we had 7 scholarship players (Sid’s first year), but I never saw it change throughout Sid’s tenure.

I actually think the 3 game sitting (now that it is over and we have 3 Ws) may be HUGE for us in the long run. Leslie now sees that we can win without him so it is up to him to perform.

I’ll believe it when I see it from Calvin. He was a real cancer last year – and I didn’t even think he was all that good. Painter and Howell are VERY effective now, you can tell they’ve really worked hard this off season. I hope Gott can get through to Calvin, I really do. What I don’t want to see him doing is hoisting jumpers and getting his ass handed to him on the boards. Just play the game the way it is supposed to be played.

Tucker I was going to let it go but the year from the song is 1969. How could you forget man’s favorite number? 69!!!! I’m joking. Just had to aggravate.

The one thing that stands out to me about this team (above all) is the fact that they seem to believe in one another and themselves, and that my friends is something for us all to smile about.

Another thing is the fact that they’re actually being coached. A lot of times Sidney looked like a dad with limited basketball knowledge having to step up and coach up his 6th grade son’s team when no else wanted to do. He had to learn the college game on the fly and it never worked in the end.

Good grief Sid sucked as a coach. Princeton is solid as always. I wonder if they could beat Belmont?.

I for one cannot wait for Calvin Leslie to get back on the court. The buzz surrounding him this year has been positive. He has so much ability and potential that it is hard not to get excited about getting him back.

He needs to play a full 40 minutes, it is attitude that brought him down last year. I don’t think Gottfried would play him if he tries to pull the same crap he did a year ago. I don’t care if he starts or not, he had better come to play. Painter and Howell have been outstanding and I think Calvin will need to earn his time and work his way into the starting lineup. I cant help but think that we could be a dangerous team with a focused and passionate Leslie, an eligible de Thaey, and a healthy Wood.

Wow, no Leslie, Wood, or Dethay, and a slow deliberate game, yet with all that adversity, we played with patience, and intelligence, and won. I like watching this team. Erase my Sid memories. Go Gott! Congrats!

We would have lost this game by double digits last year. What a great turn around!

  12. wolfpack4ever 11/16/2011 at 11:33 PM #

Finally. After fifteen years and two coaches, a team and staff that I look forward to watching and cheering for! Maybe it’s twenty years and three coaches.

I was actually on the edge of my seat, cheering and clapping. That which HWSNBN and Foulup took away, Gott has restored: a good feeling about Wolfpack basketball.

No longer will I be watching and waiting for the imminent collapse.

    Go Pack!

This squad will have trouble against big teams due to our scarcity of perimeter shooters, but I like the fact that we actually appear physically fit and imposing. Painter, Howell, and Vandenberg can bang with just about anybody. No fat slobs or birdchest big men. Haven’t been able to say that since the V days.

Does anybody else notice a little Elden Campbell in Painter?

  14. ktpritch 11/16/2011 at 11:57 PM #

Happy with the win – we would have lost that game by 20 last year…

  15. old13 11/17/2011 at 2:18 AM #

Personally I liked the “Ausie Thunder” dunk on the break!

  16. Pack78 11/17/2011 at 7:16 AM #

^Vandy contributed valuable minutes with 6 points,5 bounds and some solid interior D.

  17. graywolf 11/17/2011 at 7:42 AM #

^ Vandy’s block and beating everybody down court for the dunk was spectacular. He deserves the accolades for hustle.

mista wolf You got me. It is 1969. However, I have not seen that spirit since 1983.

My wife gives my crap all the time because I constantly slaughter lyrics.

“hey hey were the monkeys, were too busy singing and puttin everybody down” or

“my anus is a center hole” by the J Geils Band

    or
“I ate a one ton tomato”

  19. vapackfan 11/17/2011 at 8:15 AM #

Agree ktpritch. Last year they would have folded like a deck chair. these are the kind of games where you need good coaching. I said earlier in th week same players from last year, better TEAM this year

That win last night that showed more moxy and guts than I have seen from any Les, Herb or Sid teams. After that I am just a little giddy.

This was a great game to watch. Hope it starts a trend.

The thing I liked best about last night’s win was this….

In the past three coaching regimes, we’ve had nights when we’ve been clicking and have played better than last night and have won big games. But last night, we were not clicking. We were down two players going in, and lost Wood 2 minutes in. We were playing a pesky opponent which has historically given us problems. We had every reason to lose last night.

Despite that, we played hard throughout, played solid D, crashed the boards, and gutted one out. Big time.

And this….Cause I’m a free roaming perv now, and this perv will watch you change.

    Tucker – you’re KILLING me !!!

    LOL…
