Pack Adds TJ Warren!

Quick blog entry

Mark Gottfried and his coaching staff have worked tirelessly this off-season to bring as much talent to Raleigh as possible, and the results are remarkable. State is one of only two programs that have signed more than one top 25 recruit. (Arizona has signed three.) The addition of TJ Warren bolsters an impressive recruiting class, with highly touted guards Rodney Purvis (top 25) and Tyler Lewis (top 50) having already committed.

According to Scout.com, the 6’7 forward is a “big-time scorer” and “can really shoot it from deep.” Warren chose NC State over Georgetown, UNC and Florida.

NC State has let a ton of talent get out of the state in recent years, but the current coaching staff is making North Carolina a priority. So far, it is paying off in a big way, as Purvis, Lewis and Warren are all from this state.

Despite not having coached a game at NC State- and having been out of coaching for two years- Coach Gottfried has assembled a top 5 recruiting class for 2012. If a couple more dominoes fall, State could have one of the top two classes in the nation.

During State’s coaching search, most college basketball experts claimed the State job is one of the toughest, and none of them seemed to be able to grasp the concept that State has almost always recruited well. While State isn’t known for top 5 classes, top 20 classes are the norm. Coach Gottfried and staff should be commended for their efforts on the recruiting trail, where so far they have exceeded expectations.

..more to come…

“The decision comes on the heels of 6-foot-9-inch forward Brice Johnson, the 25th-ranked player in the class, committing to North Carolina last Wednesday. Johnson and Warren were offered the same scholarship.”

^ That line of obvious bullshit is apparently from Erin Summers, whoever the fuck that is.

But if you point out the obvious bullshit, you are called a “crazy conspiracy theorist.”

ESPN just bumped our class up to #2 in the country.

    http://insider.espn.go.com/ncb/recruiting/classrankings?&action=upsell&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fncb%2frecruiting%2fclassrankings

If we land Amile and Duke actually lands Shabazz Muhammad and/or Mitch McGary + 1 other of their top 50 prospects, you could see a #1,2,3 (or some variation of 1-4 with Arizona in there) with Tobacco road holding three of the top spots.

    That’s what I’m talking about!!!

Don’t forget about last basketball season.

Our basketball program won’t be resurrected until these big-time recruits become big-time players.

But I like the direction we’re headed in.

Great job coach. We still need to give him 2 or 3 years to really get rolling. Its obvious he and his staff can recruit and the man took Alabama to a #1 ranking. Let that sink in for a moment. I think its safe to say he can coach a bit. Anybody still pissing and moaning over this hire is a world class pessimist. There is a new sheriff in town Roy!

I love this class. I really do, but I’m a little worried about our size. I just feel like we’re not going to have any inside game. Admittedly, I’m completely ignorant of Coach G’s system. Maybe its designed for that. But I just don’t see who is going to play inside for us in the next couple of years.

Lewis looks like a great point guard, but didn’t Purvis rule out schools that didn’t want him to play point? I know point guard has been our most obvious hole for many years, but now it feels like we’re getting overloaded. Are we still recruiting that Graham? He’s another small guard. I read that Warren didn’t like UNC because they wanted him to play power forward, that he wanted to play on the perimeter. Wood is clearly an outside only guy. Are Painter and Vandenburg our only inside options?

Another thing that can’t go overlooked is the great group of coaches he has assembled. He said that their number one job this summer was to “recruit, recruit, recruit” and it looks like they did just that. I look forward to seeing what type of product they put on the floor.

You get the feeling Gott is thankful for this second chance and is taking nothing for granted. He and his staff are simply out working most of the other programs on the recruiting trail. What better way to start than to make sure all the local kids know that you are a priority.

I think UNC and Duke are actually good examples of what happens when you chain these kinds of classes back-to-back-to-back. If they’re any indication, most of these large high ranked classes yield 1 instant star and 2-3 really solid players within a few years. Our class from last year even showed that to some extent with both CJL and Zo showing that they can play at this level, but both still need a lot of coaching to reach that ‘star’ level.

If I had the time, I would love to do some research and a write up on top recruiting classes, how they’ve played out for those teams, and how long it took for those players to mature (especially the 4/5 star ones). Example would be someone like Duke 5 star recruit Ryan Kelly who did ‘ok’ when he played limited minutes his freshman year but really broke out last year and is expected to be a key player this year.

We now need a solid big man. A rebounding beast. Someone to clean up the boards and give us the put backs.

It’s about time we reassert ourselves as a top basketball program, a resurrection 20 years in the making. Hiring someone that has been on the sidelines with a couple of years to reflect on his job may turn into the best thing we ever did as a program. We have always been our most successful when our coaches and players felt like they had something to prove. Hell, our university was founded by farmers with a chip on their shoulder, that attitude plays well to our fan base.

When we start competing with and beating the blues regularly, you’ll start to see a lot more of red-wearing casual fans. From my own personal experience, I hit high school about the time that State was totally in the dumps (Les Robinson Invitational anyone). Since I was an ABCer, Duke was really the only option.

    Now as for football….

    “Now as for football….”

    drgreenhouse,
Don’t throw a wet blanket on this thread by bringing up football.

    Just kidding! lol

Could someone please let Coach G give a class to the football coaches on recruiting?!?

  14. blpack 11/02/2011 at 5:30 PM #

Awesome! We will be good in hoops again soon.

  15. packalum44 11/02/2011 at 5:55 PM #

#2 standing in recruiting right now….wonder if Sean Miller and Rick Barnes really thought recruiting was “tough” here. I never bought it. Harder than current job? Sure, but we have EVERYTHING in place to be great EXCEPT recent success.

Look what Oregon and OK State are doing in football once they got good coaches and facilities.

  16. packalum44 11/02/2011 at 5:56 PM #

Also I’m really happy for the coaches. This gives them confidence in the program going forward. When you work hard and it pays off, you continue to perform at high levels. Go staff! Let’s lock up Amille and really open some eyes for 2013!!!

  17. Rochester 11/02/2011 at 6:21 PM #

They could lock up Timmy from South Park and this would still be a great class. Psyched.

    Classic.

And for the record, the things Erin Sumners writes makes Heather Dinich look like Dan Wetzel.

Great job coach Gott! Really excited about this staff and our bball future.

  23. jljones 11/02/2011 at 9:31 PM #

This is what a real coach does–recognizes that sucess starts with highly rated recruits and obviously he and his staff put in the needed time and commitment to ensure he was in the running for their talents. Won’t comment on how sucessfully this will work out but his first step is RIGHT. TOB NEEDS TO TAKE LESSONS FROM GOTT rather than trying to “coach up” his low rated recruits. State has always been know as a basketball school and we have proved that we can be great in that the two national championship teams proved that. We can be a national factor in Football with the right commitment and the RIGHT COACH AND STAFF–GREAT JOB COACH GOTT–THANKS FOR SHOWING WHAT IT TAKES TO GET THE RIGHT RESULTS

  24. redwolf87 11/02/2011 at 9:42 PM #

Absolutely. This is a real coach without gimmicks, with real experience at being a head coach, who knows how to build a team. No novelty offenses, no lack of experience with the college game. And it’s definitely encouraging that he had all the opportuntities at ESPN to watch programs all over the country. The best programs keep an eye on what works and what doesn’t. Gott knows, even moreso now than he did at Alabama.

    Hard not to get excited.

  25. Tuffy2 11/02/2011 at 9:59 PM #

Recruiting is only hard here if you believe it is and Gott believes in his coaching staff and himself.

He is taking on the two headed monster while others would not even try.

DON’T GIVE UP! DON’T EVER GIVE UP! WE ARE COMING BACK FOLKS…….
