Usually when you lose your leading scorer, you wonder who the points will come from. However, this year we’re going from basically a one man offense to a 5 man offense. This should be a fun team to watch.

Also, when you look at the stats you posted above, you realize this is a veteran team. We don’t have to worry about the “we’re too young” excuse from a year ago.

All things considered, the info in the article seems pretty moot.

  3. vtpackfan 11/11/2011 at 6:28 PM #

We had a basketball team last year?

  4. gtspack 11/11/2011 at 7:45 PM #

Logon to packpride. I knew things were going to good. We are in trouble with the NCAA. CRAPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

^My hope is that the NCAA vacates our last 5 years of bb records so that I may forget the misory of it all.

From the N&O: “The former student, the release said, also admitted to providing $1,349 in impermissisble benefits to a former student-athlete. That remains the subject of further review by the NCAA.”

Could the former student-athlete in question be Ryan Harrow?

anyone catch the band on the Carl Vinson playing “the army goes rolling along” on the way off the court at halftime aka our fight song….

I knew Calvin was gonna sit a few games, the other stuff is news to me (though there were always rumblings about how Lowe conducted business, some more substantive than others).

If this NCAA stuff is true, we better start finding recipes for crow because we’re going to be eating a lot of it.

Well, the Leslie stuff IS true, because it’s already been ruled on. According to the release, the former student ADMITTED to providing impermissible benefits to another athlete. However, I don’t see much of a punishment coming from this. We will likely vacate some wins (OMG!) and/or the athlete will have to repay the money. If it’s Harrow, would he be subject to any penalties at KY? Not that he’s playing this year, just curious how that works.

Quick overall impressions from first game:

Starters – Brown, Williams, Wood, Howell, Vandenberg

    Rotation – Johnson, Painter, Harris

Leslie, De Thaey did not dress for off-the-court issues.

Overall, I thought it was a pretty good effort – a solid B-. Solid, competent, energetic but always room for improvement.

Defensive effort was fairly good – some gaps allowing penetration and a lack of aggressiveness at times but our perimeter guys for the most part played a really nice defensive game. Ashville’s team goes as their guards go, and our guys – especially Williams – never let them get untracked. Brown seemed like he had 20 or so seals. Good energy shown on this area of the floor.

As for the offense – lots of good ball movement. It’s an elegant offense that gives you plenty of options to choose from. Offensive skills are really highlighted and really gives a big player like Howell a chance to flourish. With his great hands and passing ability, Howell is a key cog in this offense. Brown looked good running the show, and Johnson is going to be very important for us as he fills in for Brown, Williams, and Wood. In addition, very impressed with the tempo of the game and State actually looked good in the open floor (remember the last time you felt that way).

    – Offense kinda stagnated a bit late in the first and through too much of the second, but Ashville deserves a lot of credit here (more on that in a sec).

Key stat of the night: Rebounding Differential. I haven’t looked up the final numbers, but State absolutely controlled the boards – and this allowed us to control the flow of the game. Howell and Painter were beasts on the boards (both double digits on boards). Can’t say enough about how much the game was controlled through our board work. I also can’t wait to get Leslie back – as he is another fine rebounder. I’m excited about this aspect of the team. I think Ashville closed the gap late in the second, but if you’d have been there I feel you would’ve been impressed with our rebounding effort.

Unsung stat of the night: I believe Howell was perfect from the line (6-6, I believe). Overall, IIRC – we were pretty solid from the line. Painter struggled some, but we looked ok here. We need to knock these down to steal some games, so let’s hope this continues.

Unsung hero: CJ Williams. First, his defensive effort was great. But he also played his role perfectly on the offensive end and helped out down low. Never forced anything, played within the game and looked great knocking down nearly everything he put up. The ultimate glue guy and a steady leader for this team.

Others – Vandenberg needs to be more assertive. Got into early foul trouble and never really got going. Looked ok in the second half though. … The Harris kid has a really nice touch. I was impressed with his offensive skills. I’d like to see some more aggression down low and on the boards, but definitely potential there.

Concerns: Aggression, Toughness. It really looked like we were going to pull away and win easily by 20+. We were up by 17 at the half and on track to do just that. But Ashville is a very solid low-major with a lot of veterans. Don’t get me wrong – I’m not trying to upsell them, but it is a solid, scrappy team and a fairly good defensive team. They were the tougher, more aggressive team in the second half and they did what a solid, veteran team does.(Ashville has a very legit chance of winning their conference again and advancing to the NCAA tournament).

That said, our lack of response, lack of toughness and agression displayed in the second half … that’s either going to have to be coached out of us or beaten out of us – whatever. We did just enough, and Ashville does deserve credit – but we’ve got to gain / earn that killer instict that was never present under Lowe.

No need to end on a sour note though. Good, solid win over a veterean low-major that chances are will be in the NCAA tournament again. Nice way for the Gottfried era to start and I hope to see more games against tougher competition in the future once Gottfried & co. have more control over the scheduling. Go Pack!

BJD, I won’t be eating any crow personally. I hope like hell that there’s no fire where this smoke is coming from, but I’ve been a State fan long enough to know that Murphy’s Law is alive and well for NCSU. I think there’s probably a picture of Tuffy in the dictionary next to the definition.

But those a-holes in Chapel Hill can kiss my ass. Their football team set benchmarks for the levels of cheating and deceit to which they will stoop, and regardless of the likely light sanctions coming their way they have absolutely no room to be dishing out anything. I’ll just quote TOB’s triple threat quote if the need arises. I think that says pretty much all that needs saying.

Was pleased to see the team play together and with chemistry (when’s the last time that happened?) even with the two players sitting last night. If Howell and Painter keep up their strong start, I think we’ll all be pleasantly surprised come selection Sunday. UNC-A is no Duke, but they’re no slouch either. Then again, last night Duke was no Duke either. I’d love to see us play with the intensity of the Belmont team, but with fewer unforced errors.

There’d be a lot more crow to eat if we had covered this up for three years instead of addressing it as soon as it could be addressed. This happened in May. Yesterday was the first game that was played since it happened and Leslie sat. (Not counting Flagler here. It’s BS when teams suspend players for games that don’t count.)

We’ll learn more about the former student athlete involved soon enough, I’m sure. But if these violations all happened after the end of the 2010-11 season, talk about vacating anything (aside from making jokes about the horrible record) isn’t necessary. I’m disappointed there was an issue, but it’s a huge contrast to the UNC case in how we’re handling it instead of covering it up.
