Cody Zeller (and Indiana Game Thread in the Comments)

Given Pack fans distaste for UNC’s absurdly awkward Senior, Tyler Zeller, we found it only appropriate to highlight his younger brother, Cody: the lone freshman in Tom Crean’s starting rotation. I can’t wait to see how the students go after him.

For starters, the family resemblance is impeccable.

Apparently his teammates aren’t trusting young Cody and he is having some trouble getting the ball. ESPN

Crean’s thoughts:

During a preseason scrimmage in October, Indiana coach Tom Crean saw something he didn’t like: His top freshman, Cody Zeller, wasn’t getting the ball. So Crean stopped practice to institute a rule. If the 6-foot-11 forward didn’t get at least one touch on a possession, his team’s bucket wouldn’t count.

“They did not lose the next couple of scrimmages,” Crean said later. “It was amazing. Cody makes it easier for everyone. Not to be a visionary, but I saw it coming.”

On a more serious note, at an athletic 6’ll”, Zeller could create a mis-match in the paint and The Pack will need to step up inside.

BJD Update: Because I’m lazy, this shall double as your open game thread. See you in the comments, bring the snark brothers and sisters. Hallelujah!!

Great effort boys. Still a lot to learn but there was a lot of good tonight. We need scorers, bad, but that is what is coming. We need for Painter from 18 to not be our best option. We need some duke set plays like they ran for SB or Red-Dick to get Wood open but I have a feeling that this will all be built in over time. I like the progress I have seen in every player over last year and the improvement we are seeing. These boys will be a heck of a squad at the end of the year if they just keep fighting.

Love Gott’s fire and how he handles the team. Gotta be a great guy to play for, good balance on everything, and i love the fire.

Jordan Collins was a good shooter??????

    Troll, no TDT or Vandy.

  4. lush 11/30/2011 at 11:16 PM #

He was a center who barely played

I think a corn has hit some of you on the head.

Missed FT’s during that stretch hurt, but all the made ones up until then got us to that point. I think what hurt worse was poor defense during that time. Too many easy shots for Indiana.

And yes, we’ve had some good shooters – 05-06 was a good 3 pointing shooting team. Hodge had his moments when he could hit 3’s. Melvin could shoot them too. I am sure there were others.

Tony Grundy was a solid outside shooter and happened to have the best low post drop fadeaway in the league for a couple seasons.

“Other than Wood, we have had terrible shooters for the last 15 years”

    Don’t be ridiculous.

    Atsur
    Evtimov
    Sherrill
    Melvin
    Fells
    Bethel
    Archie

    That’s just a quick list.

Great effort compared to the past 10+ years.

“Jordan Collins was a good shooter??????”

I know he was a center, that was kind of my point. To fit into Herb’s system he had to transform to a pick and pop player. Operating in the high post and shooting just inside the arc. I may be remembering him as a better shooter than he was but he had to be near a 50% shooter by his senior year. I remember him knocking down a lot of “Painter” type shots. Even still IE and Atsur were good shooters.

I don’t mind losing but I hate giving a game away at home. Liked our effort and hustle but our execution and decision making were poor over the last 5 minutes. I hope we learn from this and can close out some tight games against quality opponents before the ACC season start.

Just got home from the game. Effort was much better than under Sid. We had to play 8 against 5, good practice for duke and unc-cheat.

I liked the way the crowd was into the game. First non-conference game the crowd was into in a long time. Also liked the way we played for most of the game. Felt like that STUPID FLAGRANT FOUL was the play that clinched the game for IU, which was really sad. Yes Wood fouled him, but there NOTHING flagrant about what he did. NOTHING, NOTHING, NOTHING. I’m not sure about what happens about the referee situation when it comes to non-conference basketball games (as opposed to football games, where the visiting team’s conference supplies the referees), but I HOPE those were Big 1G refs, because that was a really bad call. (Sorry if I’m beating a dead horse, but I have to vent my frustration some way).

Great effort for most of the game. CJ played well but someone needs to tell him if he wants to get to the NBA he needs to lay off shooting outside of 10-12 feet because he will hurt his draft position.
We need to recruit a big man that can actually play the center position which should solve the inside D issues.
Last but not least, the shooters will be here and the coach knows what he is doing.

Give it time! My God, some of you act like we were suppose to be a top twenty team this year and with a new coach who has not even coached in a few years. I’m impatient as much as the next SOB but unless I am blind or was watching another team this year I believe we are ahead of schedule.

Was at the game – haven’t read the comments but thought I’d throw in my worthless $.02.

We lost because we aren’t a smart / tough team yet. That was a game that we should have put away down the stretch – yet after the under 8:00 timeout of the second half Indiana got anything they wanted on offense, we missed free throws, and we continiously turned the ball over.

Defense left a lot to be desired all night – I thought the zone was effective in stretches – but the thing I was most disappointed in were the careless turnovers. I don’t want to be too tough on the team, but toughen up and don’t turn the ball over and we walk out with a W. Hopefully a learning lesson. Effort was there throughout though … Refreshing not to have to discuss effort level after a game. Disappointing loss, but hopefully the team can grow from it.

    Go Pack

Mr and Mrs. Zeller are the new Eric Williams’ mom.

    ^Lolllll.

Random announcer: “Did you know that Mr. and Mrs. Zeller had 89 rebounds in ONE game! Wow!!!”

(Zeller’s hold up dual foam ‘#1’ fingers complete with goofy grins on faces).

  17. EasternWakeWolf 12/01/2011 at 8:01 AM #

It is painfully obvious that M & M Zeller should have opted to not reproduce.

Calvin was great on defense, but needs to refrain from shooting when he is more than 3 feet from the basket.

“It will haunt us. This was “The Game” as far as the post season is concerned.Look at the schedule in terms of opponent RPI.”

I am astounded that some of you expect a team that did not finish better than 9th in the ACC for five years to make the tournament the new coach’s first year. If you realize the hole Gott has to dig out of and enjoy the growth of the team you will enjoy the process much more and complain much less.

  19. Oldwolf 12/01/2011 at 9:18 AM #

I was at the game and have a complaint/rant about how some of the atmosphere was lost/overshadowd by the jumbotron/sound syetem operators.

At one point faily late in the game, we had just gone on a run and seemingly had some control over things. Indiana had called atimeout to try and stem momentum, the crowd was going wild and really cheering. They started one of those loud dance songs (normally I like these things) and the crowd immediately switched from cheering wildly to singing and dancing to the music. When the music stopped, the crowd was no longer cheering wildly and the crowd momentum was broken.

I did not like how that happended and said something to my wife at that time about it.

    Did anyone else notice this?

Vandy and TDT need to get some playing time. If for no other reason than to spell Howell. He has lost some weight, but he still has a LONG way to go before he’s in shape. He got tired, missed 3 FT’s and an easy lay-up down the stretch. He plays hard, but he hurt us at the end of the game. Also, the two plays where CJW got burned baseline (with no help D) really hurt us.

  21. Ed89 12/01/2011 at 9:36 AM #

Overall, I thought it was a good effort, but Rome wasn’t built overnight. The team still has to get a killer instinct. It just looked like Indiana wanted it more. Now, go beat Stanford on the road. That will be a big game later.

  22. Packfan28 12/01/2011 at 11:23 AM #

I only read the last two pages of this thread, and I saw just one person really complain about the team. (I won’t say who, but he does have a farm). I think over the last decade it would be one person for and everyone else against. Now that’s progress!

  23. redredred 12/01/2011 at 5:19 PM #

Was at the game last night. Great game. Missed free throws, defensive breakdowns, and poor shot selection killed them at the end, but if that was Sid’s team they would have lost by 20 at least. I was happy with the effort State gave.
Maybe this has already been stated, but I was really surprised not to see TDT or Vandenberg get a little playing time. I felt their height could have helped the Pack at times defensively, especially against zeller.
