Pack beats Chippewas

Today, the Wolfpack pulled away from the Central Michigan Chippewas in the second half and wound up cruising to a 38-24 victory at Carter-Finley Stadium.

NC State beats Central Michigan

Mike Glennon passed for 244 yards and four touchdowns to help North Carolina State beat Central Michigan 38-24 on Saturday.

James Washington rushed for 109 yards and a score for the Wolfpack (3-3), who picked up their first win against a Football Bowl Subdivision opponent this season.

N.C. State, which trailed 17-14 midway through the second quarter, scored 24 consecutive points to seize control.

The Wolfpack’s much-maligned defense forced five turnovers and stopped the Chippewas from scoring on eight consecutive possessions at one point.

The defense stepped up in the second half and forced the aforementioned 5 turnovers and outside of a 77-yard run in the 4th quarter, shut down the Chippewas offense. It seemed like whenever something big happened on defense, Terrell Manning was involved. In his first game back from injury, he had 9 tackles of which 1.5 were of the TFL variety (1 sack). He also had an interception and forced fumble.

Glennon spread the ball around to his skill personnel today, throwing his four touchdowns to four different receivers. The running back combination of Washington and Creecy got better the longer the game progressed. The two backs ran for 170 yards.

State is now 3-3 and gets two weeks to get ready to go to Virginia.

Now at .500, and a good win, however my question is, when is the defense gonna play both halves? Hopefully soon, especially at our next home game against the tarholes. And in case you are there,
remember even sections wear red, odd section wear white.

Where does Dave Amerson stand on the national scene for interceptions? He was tied for 1st with like 3 other guys with 4 before this game and now his has 6 on the year. The other guys are with UGA, Vanderbilt and Mississippi. Not sure how they did tonight. Maybe we can use him to bring in other CB recruits if he keeps it up.

Wish we could get Chris Bivins but I think he’s given South Florida a verbal.

amerson is good! he still makes plenty of mistakes but he’s growing into a game changer. we need to keep on getting more push up front our second level and secondary to be effective…but i’m happy with a smidge of progress! GO PACK!

    ..keep the pimpin RED hemets!

Next time come out with all black and red when it’s a night game against a team that the intimidation factor is needed. Wrong time to have cancer awareness day with those colors. I am aware what the cause is for as I have a mother that has Cancer, so I get it. If you have to put pink on an all black uniform keep it to a bow which I believe we had on.

I have always wanted to see us come out in all black say against a FSU at night and many of my friends have often wondered how we would look all in black as we would watch other teams across college football display them. But against a MAC team! Either do it right or don’t do it at all.

    HEY TOB! C’MON MAN!

We won, sure enough. But did not CMU throw like 3 or 4 interceptions? How many turnovers did they have? Again we won or did CMU lose? Listen, they got 24 points and we only beat them by 14 and that with all those turnovers…I’m just saying. I’ll take the win, I love the Pack…but just trying to keep it real. A good team has no problem with us.

Wolfonthehill got it right (mostly) and did we notice he said the same thing I did….+4 on the turnovers, without them we very well could have lost. I too liked the red helmets…but pink is not my favorite color..unles of course Steven Tyler is singing about it..PINK

I don’t understand all the praise for the defense. They’re still awful. They gave up 24 points – the second highest total to Central Michigan all year. Northern Illinois is the only team to allow more points to the Chippewas. And let’s have perspective on the team and individual turnovers forced. It’s like the Yankees’ hitting- they’re feasting on terrible teams.

I don’t mean to rain on the parade but the defense is terrible and we as fans deserve better. A shake up on the staff, for both play calling and recruiting, is a must. If we don’t see that after the season I will put myself firmly in the Yow detractor camp.

wolfonthehill – it may not have been 90% – but it was definitely the majority of the time.

I really believe this staff is going to be more committed to the run now – and they are trying to keep his 3rd down’s manageable. It’s stodgy old football. Sometimes that’s good – when it comes to penalties and turnovers – and other times, it can be more than a little boring.

I’ll be happy if the “boring” means us going 9-3 or 8-4 every year, but if it’s not going to be better than 5-7…

After looking at the last game stats for the other 3 guys with 4 interceptions this season, none of them had even 1 yesterday. Unless one or more of the many guys who had 3 interceptions coming into the weekend had 3 yesterday, David Amerson now leads the nation outright in total interceptions this season with 6.

why cant we use those helmets all the time

  13. Vegaswolf 10/09/2011 at 1:05 PM #

Folks, turnovers are a reason you win a game, just like rushing yards, time of possession and yes, even points. Saying, “we wouldn’t have won without the turnovers” is tantamount to saying, “we wouldn’t have won if we didn’t score more points than they did.”

I’m not excusing the defense; it’s still very inconsistent and when it’s bad, it’s terrible. But the INTs should be applauded, as turnovers are a part of the game, they make a difference. Think of the pick six against us in the GA Tech game … without it … who knows would have happened. But what happened was we lost, and that was one of the reasons.

Vegas, you’re a smart guy. Thanks for saying that, because I was starting to slip into “But without the 4 INT’s…” thinking. Just win, baby!

Don’t forget the pass Art Norman or Darryl Cato-Bishop (I think anyway…might have been a linebacker) batted away on 3rd and something that could very easily have been caught by us and returned.

The defense does some things pretty well but I don’t think they’ve got the speed or the fundamental tackling or rushing ability we need. We’ll see what the bye week does for us.

Nothing spectacular, but it’s a win. I’ll take four more just like them.

    Pros:
    – Glennon played well and is improving.
    – Washington had a nice game.
    – Defensive adjustments at halftime to bring more pressure.
    – Opportunistic ball hawking by the secondary, especially Amerson.

    Cons:
    – Special teams: freshman kickers looked like freshman kickers
    – Coaching of special teams: You were caught off guard by that onsides kick? It was CMU’s only chance. Peterkuskie just isn’t getting it done between special teams and recruiting.
    – Some WTF mental lapse moments: TJ’s fumble, that long running TD where 1/2 the guys whiffed. It seemed like a couple of plays we just took off and they made us pay.
    – We didn’t physically outmatch or really overpower CMU. We were faster, but other than that our guys didn’t visibly look more impressive.

    Other thoughts:
    – CMU is a bad, bad team. Western Michigan beat them by 30+ points and Michigan State beat them by ~ 38. For one half, we let them hang around. Come on. That’s not going to beat anyone in the ACC.
    – This is the type of MAC game that TOB loves. Feast on an easy opponent and get a win. The Big 10 pads their record the same way.
    – The Wake loss isn’t looking as bad as it once did. Do I think we could beat FSU on the road to make up for it? No, but they lost at Wake about like we did yesterday.
    – We got the 3rd rate ESPN3 crew yesterday.
    – I see maybe 3 wins left on the schedule. It’d take a borderline miracle to go 4-2.

Also, suprising but good to see Manning back yesterday – nice INT. I thought he was not back until Virginia . . .not a bad win and good crowd considering fall break.

Was this the first time since 1894 that the football team has worn pink?

If TOB is to remain, and can make another bowl trip, and BC will continue their slide, and fire their HC, then TOB can bring him back to his staff and bid Archer an overdue farewell. TOB was much better with Spazioni on his staff. Archer sucks!!!!!!

    At least we WON!

We played a team on our level and we won!
Actually, their defense ranked higher than ours prior to our meeting, NO SURPRISE THERE!

    Central Michigan
    FBS Ranking Offense Defense
    Rushing 117.0 (89th) 158.7 (68th)
    Passing 233.5 (55th) 240.8 (79th)
    Overall 87th 75th

    NC State
    FBS Ranking Offense Defense
    Rushing 116.2 (92nd) 172.8 (82nd)
    Passing 258.7 (38th) 239.8 (77th)
    Overall 78th 87th

Their offense was ranked 87th and our DEFENSELESS DEFENSE managed to allow 427 yards. I don’t think we are making progress.

Good news! We are guaranteed not to lose this weekend, regardless of who is available to play.

  22. wolfonthehill 10/09/2011 at 9:05 PM #

chop – Turns out it was 80% runs on first down. With totally underwhelming success…

And I totally get that superior teams force turnovers, and it’s why they win. But damn, against CMU, if you’re +4, you should win by 30. That may seem like splitting hairs, but this game did very little to make me feel a bit better about getting to 5 wins this season…
