I found some of our defensive rankings interesting.

We’re getting to the QB, 16th in the nation in sacks.
Our secondary is 2nd in the nation in interceptions.
We’re 3rd in the nation at turnovers forced.

You would think a defense that forces turnovers and gets to the quarterback would be a pretty good defense but yet in total defense we’re 88th in the nation.

WV Wolf, I think it’s b/c those stats come against the pass. Against the run the defense struggles mightily. And, I don’t know if total defense takes into account opponents’ success on 3rd and 4th downs, but that stat would place State’s defense nationally somewhere in the abyss.

Our run defense is 85th and our pass defense is 83rd so it’s not that our run defense is our weakness. 3rd and 4th down defense stats are listed in the entry.

I just found it interesting that in some key areas for defensive success we’re ranked highly but yet our defense overall sucks.

Keep in mind 12 of these turnovers were against Liberty & Central Michigan. I would like to fins a silver lining somewhere too, but the bottom line is this: Poor Recruiting, Bad Offensive running schemes, poor Pass Def, avg to less than avg Coaching = Poor performance

44.44% 3rd down stoppage is woeful when factoring in 2 FCS opponents.

The thing that stood out to me is that 3 of the top 5 tacklers are in the secondary.

edit – make that 3 of the top 4

Would anyone be interested in a trailing 3 game performance stat tracker? I was thinking about putting one together on Sunday’s to look at, so we can see not only State’s trailing 3 game performance but also the upcoming opponents or entire division / conference.

If anyone is interested, I’ll start compiling.

    3rd Conversion against FBS competition:
    CMU: 3 of 10 (30%), State: 7-15 (46.6%)
    GT: 4 of 12 (33%), State: 5 – 14 (35.7%)
    Cincy: 9 of 16 (56.25%), State: 6 – 16 (37.5%)
    WF: 8 of 16 (50%), State: 5 -14 (35.7%)

So kind of what I was talking about earlier, if we look at the trailing, we went from 50-56% conversion, down to the low 30’s on defense, but our past offensive performance in the mid 30’s suggests to me that CMU was an anomaly. We could for example, put GT’s 33% performance and then compare its previous 3 games to see if they were trending down, up, did State outperform them etc

inside those numbers there are some 3rd and longs that really killed us. forget the scoring, those were absolute killers… that ulitimately led to points most of the time. i’ve seen some decent play out of the defense… sadly followed by giving up 3rd and long.

the long run at the end of the central mich game is evidence to me that our defense while “experienced,” is playing like a young defense. i think there are areas on d that we’ll see improve thru the year and into next. that said, do i want archer to be around for another season? HELL NO!

all in all, i think where the team is now collectively.. is where they should have been at the start of the season. my question is, will we see a repeat of the 2010 performance in 2012?

Gotta love pack fans – still with a sorry home schedule so far we are 4th in the conference in attendance.
