LRM’s Initial Reaction to Mark Gottfried

By the time Mark Gottfried was hired, I was indifferent, borderline lethargic.

I was working in Puerto Rico that week, with no 3G and very limited Wi-Fi, and I’d already begun my self-imposed month-long hiatus – like I do every spring – away from all things N.C. State, which is entirely necessary to preserve my sanity. Every April I wonder how that kid from the foothills ended up a lifelong State fan and the only answer that ever seems to make sense is indeed quite simple: it wasn’t a choice, it’s inherent. So every May I find my way back.

I’ll forever remember my response on that Tuesday afternoon in April, when I got my buddy’s text that we’d hired Gottfried, which mercifully ended another grueling coaching search that it’s unfair to call mishandled, but entirely fair to call disappointing: “Don’t even joke about that, can you imagine how screwed we are if that’s true?”

Perhaps that reaction was irrational, based on Gottfried’s lineage and marginal success at both Murray State and then Alabama. But it was an honest reaction nonetheless. Look, it’s nothing against Gottfried, necessarily. I’d read The Letter the night before, so I’d made peace with the fact this coaching search wouldn’t end any better than the previous one. Regardless of what I hoped, I knew all along it wouldn’t be Billy Donovan; and as soon as Arizona beat Duke, I knew it wouldn’t be Sean Miller. I understood that we’d blown our shot at Rick Barnes last time around.

But as a long-suffering State fan, I was finally forced to accept that, in fact, all those folks were right: our job wasn’t the destination job we all so vehemently believed. The great N.C. State tradition of the older generations – the one largely responsible for building the ACC into something beyond a regional phenomenon – had been effectively and systemically annihilated by two decades of corrupt, opportunistic cronyism by our incompetent – and far too often, impotent – administration.

So while I’ll admit I didn’t necessarily find the hire inspiring, being a pragmatist I can at least appreciate its necessity, and I decided immediately to give him a fair chance, just like I did his predecessors. I wasn’t impressed by his coach-speak at the introductory press conference, because every coach “says all the right things” when he’s hired. Saying the right things doesn’t make him a winner. But he does seem to have an appreciation for the task at hand as well as the often unrealistic expectations us State fans tend to have. And so far, he’s assembled a fine staff and he’s apparently made quite the immediate impact on the recruiting trail.

It’s far too early for me to formulate any kind of definitive opinion about Mark Gottfried. But for me, his real value before he’s coached even a single game has proven to be intangible. He’s obviously both well-liked and -respected by his former ESPN colleagues, and just a few months into his tenure he’s already generated an improved perception of this wannabe program that can never expect to compete with Carolina and Duke.

If nothing else, I’ve somehow found myself excited about the possibility of Gottfried returning us to prominence, and I’m making a concerted effort to have a positive outlook on what he offers. Obviously, I wish him nothing but wild, unrivaled success. He may never win a game at State, but if having him on the sidelines keeps Mike Patrick and Andy Katz from constantly running their yaps about their favorite coach out in the desert, then I’ll forever remember Gottfried as one of State’s great coaches.

As for results, I don’t ask for much. Just beat Carolina and Duke regulalry and win the ACC Tournament. I don’t think that’s unreasonable at all.

All we can go by is what Gott has done since he arrived, and clearly what he has done so far is tremendous. Plugged a few holes for this year so we will only semi-suck, injected energy and enthusiasm into the program, and put NCSU State in a competitive recruiting environment.

    So far, so good.

  2. MattN 10/19/2011 at 4:18 PM #

^Hard to see how he could do any more than that. I’m pretty impressed so far.

“We have a real chance to become a premier program in the ACC and the country and maybe I’ve been wearing my State colored glasses for too long, but it looks like we are doing everything possible to take that opportunity.”

    What are you smokin?

“Not to change the subject but isn’t today the day the NCAA is supposed to announce UNCX’s penalty(ies)?”

    Let’s worry about State.

    stillapackfan,

Obviously, not this year…but I think over the next 5. The timing has never been better…and I look at it as if not now, when? So let’s grab this opening and go for it! What have we got to lose? Our dignity? Been there, done that. I am a state fan that has suffered through Les, Herb and El Sid.

As for what I’m smoking…it’s called OPTIMISM!

I’ll be happy if we can stop giving each team we play 10-15 points before we start playing.

I had heard of MG prior to our hire. In fact when we hired Sidney, I was hoping we could get MG from Alabama or someone of his caliber. Especially since he followed David Hobbs who had left the UA program in much worse shape than he found it with only a 110-76 record in 6 seasons so MG basically had a rebuilding job when hired.

This was a great paragraph, and all I ever come back to when I start thinking about basketball:

But as a long-suffering State fan, I was finally forced to accept that, in fact, all those folks were right: our job wasn’t the destination job we all so vehemently believed. The great N.C. State tradition of the older generations – the one largely responsible for building the ACC into something beyond a regional phenomenon – had been effectively and systemically annihilated by two decades of corrupt, opportunistic cronyism by our incompetent – and far too often, impotent – administration.

End of story, at least for me. Hopefully, Gottfried will at least be competent and we can stop embarrassing the university by our performance and off-court nonsense.

For the record, I’m twelve. Sorry it took me so long to reply, I had band practice tonight after school.

I’ve just taken a new stance on idiotic, pointless banter from readers who bitch about a free product. I’m only twelve but I know 1) that if I have nothing good to say then I should say nothing at all, and 2) being appreciative is a positive thing especially when someone invites me into their house to enjoy their efforts to entertain and inform me FOR FREE, and 3) even at twelve I’m old enough to know I don’t have to sit and listen to garbage that’s contrary to 1 and 2.

Y’all started this personal yap. Feel free to submit your pieces and we’ll happily publish them. Looking forward to reading your work.

Once thing in Gott’s favor is our ACC schedule. Whereas last year we had the toughest schedule in the conference, this year may be the opposite. Wake, GT and BC are supposed to stink out loud this year, and we play each twice. Maryland lost their stud and should be weak as well. And we only play Duke once this year.

    So maybe ….

    GAWolf,

Is this your impression of Jack Nicholson in a Few Good Men?

If so I think that’s funny to compare the coming into one’s house to a free blog on a college sports team that has always been average at best. Besides the criticism wasn’t attacking or mean spirited. I am sure LRM could write something ten times better than I could. I work with numbers not words. All he was doing was offering constructive thoughts. You took it to a level of attacking him. Isn’t that what you don’t want. You don’t want to be a monkey board. I have been following or writing on this blog for several years. For the most part it has always been professional and fair.

  12. GAWolf 10/19/2011 at 8:07 PM #

So it’s professional and fair yet average at best? What keeps you coming back, then? That can be fixed I guess.

Last thing before I have to move on to what twelve year olds do best, the bottom line here is if you want to participate in the conversation, please do so. If you don’t agree with assessments of facts, please share with us your opinions on the subject matter. Your opinions about how we write for this blog are simply worthless. Go write for your own blog and do it however you please, whether it be here or in Jersey or in Egypt. You’re all welcome to come into this house, but if you start questioning anything other than opinions on athletics it’s simply not your place and I, for one, am tired of seeing it. I’ve never deleted a post. Never. But if you want to act childish and complain about a product offered for free by guys who have real jobs then frankly, we don’t need your kind around here. Please continue to join us in our average discussions.

  13. TheCOWDOG 10/19/2011 at 8:21 PM #

I had nothing to add to LRM’s thought train, precisely because of the way he succinctly happened to put my same thoughts together in his own words.

I’m obviously late, but if someone has managed to put a thorn in GA’s side, of all people, ya just might demand a second take of yourself.

  14. blpack 10/19/2011 at 8:28 PM #

He is tons better than what we had. The staff is working like crazy and maybe we won’t be world beaters this year, but the time is coming when someone has to step up and be the big dog in the league. Might as well be State.

  15. Gowolves 10/19/2011 at 8:31 PM #

When I said average at best I was talking about NCSU athletics not the blog itself. Please read a little more closely.

Cowdog I was defending a person GAwolf thought to belittle just because we wanted more out of the article.

One question GAWolf why can’t you recognize you created this by attacking him personally.

  16. TheCOWDOG 10/19/2011 at 8:54 PM #

Years ago I was critical of an article. It was a particularly petulant bitch, and one that Alpha laid out some of his infrequent castigations to.

He pretty much told this, then, newbie to ” quit yer bitchin’ and offer your own articles. ”

Poor Alpha, and subsequent readers, I took his advice.

  17. GAWolf 10/19/2011 at 9:04 PM #

A haha. Because I threw the second punch after he attacked the article and the writer for something that has literally nothing to do with the subject of the discussion.

I’ve never banned anyone either; never. But I can start today. Happy to do it. It would give y’all a chance to get a head start on your own blog. Please give me the address so I can head over there and bitch about your stories without offering anything of substance to the contrary.

As far as reading closely you smug sarcastic shit bird, why don’t you reread the title again and read the article for what it’s presented as instead of what you might have erroneously hoped it to be. And the next time you don’t like something, just do yourself a favor and keep that to yourself or at least offer an alternative to whatever you believe is incorrectly pitched. Of course, we don’t force you to read any of our entries. But that’s a simpleton’s perspective that I might be assuming too much in hoping you understand.

Lastly, I’m a twelve year old lawyer. Sadly, I finish fights of idiocy like this on a daily basis as a profession. It’s my job. I can do this shit all…damned….day.

So let’s just agree to disagree so we can all coexist and you can stick around to read, and comment on, our entries that do please your oversensitive, entitled selves. Please just remember to keep your comments focused on the subject of debate and refrain from sharing any concerns about the form in which we wilingly spend our free time to inform and entertain you and your ungrateful little typing fingers.

We also will wait with open mailboxes for your entries. I dare say they will be comical compared to LRM’s highly entertaining writing style, perspective and insight. But I would love for you to prove me wrong and write us something that will add to the great discussion of NC State sports here rather than the quality of our writing.

If you cannot see how this is identical to going to a friend’s house for a free dinner and bitching about the quality of the food, or in this case the alleged failure of the dessert to live up to the appetizer, then I’m not sure this conversation is even worth having.

  18. GAWolf 10/19/2011 at 9:11 PM #

I do have an apology to offer: LRM I’m sorry for hijacking this great perspective if the coaching search and where it left many of us when it was announced that MG would be our next coach. I think we repeatedly said here on SFN that if nothing else, his ESPN connections would help mend some festering wounds the national media continued to salt. That’s clearly already come to be, and the guy has yet to coach a single game.

I’m just thankful the weather prohibited him from jumping out of the plane, and in a best ase scenario had ti crutch his way on the court for his entire first season.

  19. choppack1 10/19/2011 at 9:22 PM #

LRM – I agree w/ a lot of your sentiments.

I can’t help but to be optimistic. The key for Gott will be how much he’s learned in his sabatical (and I’m sure I spelled that wrong.)

Here was a guy who was on the elevator on the way up – and stopped somewhere in the middle, and ended up in another building.

We’ll see how this second act turns out. He seems to have a nice combo of charisma, competence and ambition. I’m hopeful he can get it done – then again, I thought the same thing about every coach we’ve hired since Mike O’Cain (whom I thought was a terrible hire when it happened.)

  20. GAWolf 10/19/2011 at 9:27 PM #

For what it’s worth, I have several Bama grad buddies who also happen to be college basketball fans (they do exist it seems) who are adamant that we will see success under MG. I’ll hold off on an assessment or overdue hope priarily because of the ol’ “fool me once, shame on you…” cliche. And my reservation would be similar had we indeed hired Donavon. It’s amazing to e how NCSU finds new ways to shun success.

  21. stillapackfan 10/19/2011 at 9:55 PM #

“I’ve never banned anyone either; never.”

    Riiiiiiight

  22. old13 10/19/2011 at 9:56 PM #

If by nothing else, and there certainly is a lot of “else” to consider, I am very impressed with the calibre of the MG assistants, especially their successful previous experience. That’s got to be a BIG plus on the recruiting trail. And, yes, overall I am couscously optimistic about Wolfpack BB.

  23. GAWolf 10/20/2011 at 6:06 AM #

Never have. Never thought it to be my place, and quite frankly things don’t usually rile me up to tha t point. I just cannot stand someone who complains about a free or even extra cheap product. Like people who go to the dollar dry cleaners and complain ifit’s not 10 dollar service. Just don’t get it.

  24. howlie 10/20/2011 at 6:37 AM #

    Offense, schmahfense.

I want to see some DEfense, some rebounding with authority & consistency, & some jets streaking down off outlets passes to leave treadmarks on the floor.

It’s been half a lifetime since we’ve seen real basketball here.
