NC STATE FOOTBALL

Caulton Tudor (N&O)
O’Brien’s audacity of hope

Beat Central Michigan today, then wait for the cavalry – that’s been a big part of Tom O’Brien’s message all week.

The fifth-year N.C. State football coach staked out that path on Monday and talked it up again Tuesday and Wednesday.

But at 2-3 overall and with his defensive unit plagued by what resembles an injury curse, O’Brien has to try to sell hope at this point. There’s no other option.

CFN’s Take: NC State vs. CMU

What Will Happen: After getting whipped in consecutive weeks by Cincinnati and Georgia Tech, NC State will not squander an opportunity to be the bully for a chance. The Pack will take advantage of the deficiencies on the Central Michigan by establishing the running attack before turning Glennon loose on play-action. Radcliff will pile up the yards through the air, but a return to his turnover-prone ways will stifle the Chippewas’ ability to rally in the second half.

Horns’ latest defensive guru Diaz coaches beyond his years
HT: BackingthePack.com

Diaz may well be Texas’ X-factor because he does not mind taking chances, has instilled in his unit a ton of confidence and swagger, and will have his players believing they can contain the nation’s fourth-best offense and 11th most-prolific scoring machine.

With a very small sample, Diaz has shown he might be as dynamic a coordinator as Muschamp, whom he replaced last January. He’s much more likely to gamble than Muschamp, who was as good at adjusting after an opening drive as any coach I’ve seen, and Diaz has never seen a blitz he didn’t love.

The biggest difference between Muschamp and Diaz?

“We’re attacking more than in years past,” linebacker Emmanuel Acho said. “It’s evident in the turnovers (tied for seventh nationally). We’re able to pressure the ball more.”

Mack first heard about Diaz from his brother Watson Brown, whose offensive line coach had worked with Diaz at North Carolina State. Brown said he called Mickey Andrews and picked the brain of the Florida State defensive icon and former Diaz mentor.

“I talked to three unnamed head coaches in the SEC that said they would hire him in a minute,” Mack said.

ACC Weekend Preview, Oct. 7

Central Michigan (2-3) at N.C. State (2-3)

Time: 3:30 p.m.
Broadcast: ESPN3 (Sirius 117/XM 191)

Key For The Chippewas

Their defense has been abysmal, giving up 41 or more points in each of their last three games. Creating turnovers is their only chance at slowing down the Wolfpack offense.

Key For The Wolfpack

Moving the chains. Central Michigan scored 48 points last week, albiet against Northern Illinois. The Wolfpack must move the ball consistently and put up points of their own to avoid being an upset victim.

Numbers Game

ACC teams are 5-0 against Central Michigan … N.C. State has the lowest penalty yards in the ACC (34.8 per game) but has given up an ACC-high 16 sacks … Central Michigan is 0-3 on the road.

Line

N.C. State favored by 10.5

Prediction

Wolfpack 42, Chippewas 16 – The Wolfpack won’t have any problem getting win No. 3 thanks to facing another weak non-conference foe.

I’m convinced every one of our DLs and LBs are 15 lbs less than their listed weight. Slay looks to be about 245 lbs. Cole is about 215.

As far as our DBs, it doesn’t matter how big or small they are, they just suck.

  2. BJD95 10/08/2011 at 4:17 PM #

Yeah, that would have been headhunting even without the recent point of emphasis.

  3. JSRy2k 10/08/2011 at 4:25 PM #

    Turned on ESPN3 just now…
Black with red helmets…white and yellow…huh?! Is this the right game?

Ugly unis, ugly score (17-14 Directional Michigan), I think I’ll stick with LSU-Florida instead ’cause I ain’t watchin’ Akron part two!

  4. Dogbreath 10/08/2011 at 4:27 PM #

Worst clock management I’ve ever seen from CMU there. They could have easily scored with 1:10 and only 65 yards to go.

  5. Tuffy2 10/08/2011 at 4:37 PM #

I want to thank ESPN for that halftime show. Oh by the way how’s going Dogbreath?

  6. BJD95 10/08/2011 at 4:47 PM #

Looks like Clemson might have broken their QB. The Red Sea’s a -partin’ for the Deacons.

  7. Packster 10/08/2011 at 4:48 PM #

Just got here. Our uniforms look ridiculous. I can’t believe we take the field looking like that. Why does everything have to be chick-e-fied these days? Attack me if you want. I don’t care. It is just stupid. Not only can we not play but we look silly doing it.

  8. Lunatic Fringe 10/08/2011 at 4:51 PM #

The best pressure we have had in a series all year. Wow.

  9. Dogbreath 10/08/2011 at 4:53 PM #

Tuffy2, worry not. There is plenty of time for us to shit our pants.

  10. Lunatic Fringe 10/08/2011 at 4:56 PM #

Wow. Glennon under stupid pressure stands in twice to throw to strikes. 1 almost caught & 1 that was for TD.

  11. BJD95 10/08/2011 at 4:56 PM #

Great series from Glennon. At least we avoid Akron Redux.

  12. Dogbreath 10/08/2011 at 5:00 PM #

The problem with scoring is that means Archer’s defense is going to trot out onto the field again. Better to get the ball and never relinquish it.

  13. Lunatic Fringe 10/08/2011 at 5:06 PM #

I believe that Archer just handed over play calling to Tenuta. Seriously…D play calling completely different this half.

  14. PackFamily 10/08/2011 at 5:19 PM #

We went man coverage on that drive and shut them down. Better go back to Zone

  15. BJD95 10/08/2011 at 5:25 PM #

    Missed the chip shot, ugh.

  16. Tuffy2 10/08/2011 at 5:34 PM #

Yeah! and those picks we got were thrown right to us each time. Just think if CMU was any good.

  17. Tuffy2 10/08/2011 at 5:43 PM #

I think if he tried the Field goal on 4th and goal the whole country would have collectively laughed at us.

What a boring F##King team. It is a week in and week out affair.

Tell you what Dogbreath! You were the highlight of the day.

  18. BJD95 10/08/2011 at 5:47 PM #

The second half has been much crisper than I expected. Aside from special teams, a solid effort overall.

Nothing to write home about, but at least we didn’t embarrass ourselves for a change.

  19. bTHEredterror 10/08/2011 at 5:50 PM #

I agree BJD, they played alot better. Got in the right spots, sealed the running lanes up far better. The offense kind of sputtered but they didn’t turnover so they worne them down a bit.

    Spoke to soon.

  20. BJD95 10/08/2011 at 5:50 PM #

Whoops, that was pretty embarrassing. Shouldn’t have spoken so soon, eep.

  21. bTHEredterror 10/08/2011 at 5:52 PM #

Watch TJ take this one back.

  22. BJD95 10/08/2011 at 5:53 PM #

Naturally, we are totally unprepared for the uber-predictable onside kick. Jeebus.

  23. BJD95 10/08/2011 at 5:56 PM #

CMU wants that backdoor cover bad.

  24. bTHEredterror 10/08/2011 at 5:57 PM #

Say what you like, Amerson is a stud.

  25. Dogbreath 10/08/2011 at 6:01 PM #

Washington may be the worst ACC back to go over 1,000 yards since Raymond Priester.
