A Brief History of Shutouts and Blowouts

Today’s 34-0 loss to Florida State was the 3rd time NC State has been shutout under Tom O’Brien. State was also shutout in back-to-back games, the opening game of the 2008 season 34-0 to South Carolina and the season finale in 2007 was a 37-0 loss to Maryland. I’m sure you’ve noticed that all 3 of those games were blowouts as well. So here’s some quick and dirty numbers I threw together between plays of the 1st half of the West Virginia/Rutgers game.

Shutouts
Let’s take a look at the history of State being held scoreless. As mentioned above, under O’Brien this is the 3rd shutout in 58 total games over 5 years. Another way to look at it is that under O’Brien, State has been shutout once every 19.3 games.

In the previous 21 seasons under Dick Sheridan, Mike O’Cain and Chuck Amato, State was shutout 4 times in a total of 251 games, or once every 62.8 games. That means TOB has 1 less shutout than the previous 3 head coaches combined.

Dick Sheridan was shutout 3 times (34-0 to Pitt and 48-0 to South Carolina in 1987 and 31-0 to Virginia in 1990) in a total of 84 games, or once every 28.0 games.

Mike O’Cain was shutout 1 time (14-0 to Baylor in 1995) in 86 games.

Chuck Amato was never shutout in 81 games.

From the 1995 Baylor game to the 2007 Maryland game, NC State went 145 straight games without being shutout.

Blowouts
Let’s also take a look at blowout losses. There is no set definition of a blowout so I will call anything over 2 scores (16 points) a blowout.

Tom O’Brien has 15 blowout losses in 58 games, 1 every 3.9 games.

In the previous 21 seasons, there were 39 blowout losses in 251 games, 1 every 6.4 games.

Chuck Amato had 4 blowout losses in 81 games, 1 every 20.3 games.

Mike O’Cain had 21 blowout losses in 86 games, 1 every 4.1 games.

Dick Sheridan had 14 blowout losses in 84 games, 1 every 6.0 games.

If it felt to you like State has been shutout and blown out more under TOB than the previous 3 head coaches, it would appear that your instincts would be correct.

We were out classed Saturday. Our weak zone defense and poor tackling was exposed by good athletes. Our receivers are to weak to create space with tight man-to-man coverage. Our Oline could not block a smaller quicker dline. We were out coached!!! We have been out coached every game this year except for the UVA game.

    TIME TO MAKE A CHANGE.

Packfan28, truly you didn’t think I was boasting of TOBs 29-29 record. You clearly have not read my other comments, or you would clearly know otherwise. TOB sucks!

In the FBS yesterday, only four teams got shut out:

    New Mexico (vs AFA 42-0)
    Kansas (vs Texas 43-0)
    Memphis (vs UCF 41-0)
    NC State (vs FSU 34-0)

To outsiders, these are our peers.

  4. 61Packer 10/30/2011 at 2:56 PM #

Air Force, Texas, Central Florida and Florida State got the shutout; NM, KU, Memphis and NCSU were shut out.

When you hold someone to 0 points, you get a shutout, but when you don’t score, you get shut out.

  5. SeaWolf 10/30/2011 at 3:00 PM #

That’s exactly what I said. Those four teams got shut out. Not really sure what you’re getting at.

it took Nads to admit I went to the Carolina game.

YEP. Free tickets and I live close by. I watched the pack until half-time and then headed to Kenan. A buddy of mine (decent fellow despite being a rabid UNX fan) takes me to games both basketball and football games in Chapel Hell. I usually catch a football game a year at Kenan and 2-3 basketball games a year at the Dean Dome. Last year I went to 5 UNC basketball games because he is going through a divorce.

Sometimes to remain friends with someone you have to overlook certain character flaws.

Two things. TOB is toast. CTC was a bad coach. There is no rehabilitation for him, no way of viewing him otherwise, period. He was never, nor will he ever be a good coach. Period.

  8. phillypacker 10/30/2011 at 3:30 PM #

Do we have any chance at all of getting Manny Diaz?

“Sometimes to remain friends with someone you have to overlook certain character flaws.”

Hilarious (in your context) and profound at the same time!

…This is the first time in, well, since coming to NCSU in 1998 that I’m excited for football to end so basketball can begin…Simply for competence in basketball coaching with some remaining talent, not delusional hope that we’ll instantly be great on the hardwood, coupled with atrocious sub-expectation football results.

My hope is that we finish the season strong so that we don’t becomre VERY EMBARASSED against Tennesse next year. NCSU88, ticket prices most likely will be less since A) we travel to UNC, B) we travel to Clemson, C) we don’t play ECU at home (or away or neutral site for that matter), and D) we don’t have any marquee non-conference games at home.

  12. Mike 10/30/2011 at 5:20 PM #

One thing jumps out at me – to look at Amato’s record, we were in most every game, yet somehow managed to lose a lot of close games. We had a ton of talent, but the coaching staff could not put it together. A loss is still a loss, but it shows a marked difference from the blowouts.

What disapointed me most yesterday was it looked like we quit. 3rd Q we knew it was going to be a loss. However, let’s play for something. Let’s win the 4thQ, let’s score, let’s do something positive to build on. We QUIT!

I am fairly patient, but with all coaches you have a body of work after a period of time. Then you are able to look back and judge if you’re better off as a program than before and how the program stacks up in the conference. How is recruiting going? Are they good kids? Do they graduate? Playing hard and inspired should be a given. How do we stack up with the other NC programs? Can this coach take us to the next level?
Beat the Cheats and everyone will step back from the edge. Lose, and it will start all this speculation until hear something definite.

  14. wolfbuff 10/30/2011 at 5:34 PM #

Ashman, you are under the mistaken impression that ticket prices have anything to do with the quality of competition. As long as costs rise, (which they do) ticket prices will. And I don’t see the OOC schedule getting any tougher. It doesnt pay.

I was planning to go to the TN game. But I’m not wasting my money.

  15. Ashman87 10/30/2011 at 7:21 PM #

You’re right wolfbuff. Thanks for point out my error. ( I too was thinking about going to Atlanta, although I don’t think I will go.)

  16. nav 10/30/2011 at 8:04 PM #

Kind of ironic that UNC and State both hired fb coaches in the same season last time and likely this time.

  17. 61Packer 10/30/2011 at 9:15 PM #

SeaWolf, a shutout happens when you shut out, not shutout, your opponent. It has something to do with nouns and verbs. Verbs show action and bring about things, like shutouts.

NCSU football no longer shuts out anyone; Wolfpack football has become a shutout opportunity for anyone who plays us these days.

And if we don’t shut down this lousy coaching staff pretty soon, our football program, if it already isn’t, will be in a shutdown state.

  18. dallas-pack 10/30/2011 at 9:17 PM #

Mike Leach, 10years coaching – never shutout
10 straight winning seasons and bowls
Remember, this was recruiting to Lubbock being at least the 4th or 5th choice for Texas recruits (after Texas ,Oklahoma, A&M and arguably TCU) – he did a lot with the talent he found.

  19. gcpack 10/30/2011 at 9:57 PM #

Mike Leach also never had a defense worth a rat’s a—.
See the defense at ECU. It was Ruffin’s defense at TxTech and opponents scored at will. They kind of do the same thing now at ECU. The Tech offense always had to outscore the other team.

I don’t want a one dimensional coach. Leach is one dimensional.
So much so he couldn’t get a decent defensive staff.

No thanks, but at least you are thinking change.

  20. SeaWolf 10/30/2011 at 10:31 PM #

61Packer, that is exactly what I said. We got shut out. As in we were a shutout. I get what you’re trying to say, but there was nothing wrong with my post.

You know things have gotten to a point where a change is needed when the inmates begin to take out their aggressions by arguing about grammar.

For the record, some of you need some work on spelling and punctuation as well, but I’m probably only pointing that out to deflect from thinking about how much we suck. Sorry.

  22. TopTenPack 10/31/2011 at 7:42 AM #

Both TOB and Chuck have embarrassed NC State with disappointing losses. For me, the big difference between TOB and Chuck is how they conduct themselves off the field. Chuck would run his month and look like the biggest idiot. TOB is honest in his assessment and moves on.

I will tend to be more lenient with TOB.

Please don’t check neither my spelling nor my grammar.

  23. codebrown 10/31/2011 at 8:19 AM #

Who’s excited about the Red and White game? Can’t get shutout in that game!

  24. JasonP 10/31/2011 at 9:05 AM #

It’s a shame for a program that has always had above average and great receivers now has some of the worst in the league. I really hate to see that.

Oh, and it’s obvious that the backfield misses the expertise that Coach Portee brought to the table.

  25. wolfpack_83 10/31/2011 at 9:45 AM #

I’ll start this out the same way that many of you already have – I LIKE and respect Tom O’Brien. Seems like a very nice guy, noble ethics, loyal, and a straight shooter. Heck, the kids seemed to have liked him too. He is exactly what we (as a school) needed when Amato left town with some shaky undertones. I liked the hire at the time, and I still admire him.

Sadly, I must now agree that his style and path forward to success is both too quiet and underachieving for most of us alumni. The game HAS changed over the past 10 years, and we need to recognize that in terms of offensive playcalling and defensive schemes. Heck, even the Big 10 is throwing the ball and running the spread!

I am NOT suggesting that we sell our soles and go back to questionable ethics and players that cannot graduate from the university. That is unacceptable, especially in light of the problems currently plaguing our sister university. But I think we need a coach with a little bit more willingness to spread the field and recruit athletes that can compete with the better programs in the conference. Easier said than done though…
