A Brief History of Shutouts and Blowouts

Today’s 34-0 loss to Florida State was the 3rd time NC State has been shutout under Tom O’Brien. State was also shutout in back-to-back games, the opening game of the 2008 season 34-0 to South Carolina and the season finale in 2007 was a 37-0 loss to Maryland. I’m sure you’ve noticed that all 3 of those games were blowouts as well. So here’s some quick and dirty numbers I threw together between plays of the 1st half of the West Virginia/Rutgers game.

Shutouts
Let’s take a look at the history of State being held scoreless. As mentioned above, under O’Brien this is the 3rd shutout in 58 total games over 5 years. Another way to look at it is that under O’Brien, State has been shutout once every 19.3 games.

In the previous 21 seasons under Dick Sheridan, Mike O’Cain and Chuck Amato, State was shutout 4 times in a total of 251 games, or once every 62.8 games. That means TOB has 1 less shutout than the previous 3 head coaches combined.

Dick Sheridan was shutout 3 times (34-0 to Pitt and 48-0 to South Carolina in 1987 and 31-0 to Virginia in 1990) in a total of 84 games, or once every 28.0 games.

Mike O’Cain was shutout 1 time (14-0 to Baylor in 1995) in 86 games.

Chuck Amato was never shutout in 81 games.

From the 1995 Baylor game to the 2007 Maryland game, NC State went 145 straight games without being shutout.

Blowouts
Let’s also take a look at blowout losses. There is no set definition of a blowout so I will call anything over 2 scores (16 points) a blowout.

Tom O’Brien has 15 blowout losses in 58 games, 1 every 3.9 games.

In the previous 21 seasons, there were 39 blowout losses in 251 games, 1 every 6.4 games.

Chuck Amato had 4 blowout losses in 81 games, 1 every 20.3 games.

Mike O’Cain had 21 blowout losses in 86 games, 1 every 4.1 games.

Dick Sheridan had 14 blowout losses in 84 games, 1 every 6.0 games.

If it felt to you like State has been shutout and blown out more under TOB than the previous 3 head coaches, it would appear that your instincts would be correct.

By the way, correct me if I am wrong, but as coach at NC State, TOB is 29-29.

Great article. There was a similar one earlier in the season relaying TOB’s awful conference, division, and road records. It’s amazing how beating UNX puts the lipstick on the pig that is our football program under TOB. I totally agree that recruiting is a big part of what is wrong.

Anyhow, here is what I wrote Dr. Yow after the Cincy game. I urge all of you that are ready for a change to send her some sort of letter. Make you displeasure known.

    Dr. Yow,

I know you are a busy person and I appreciate the job you are doing for our university. I am sure you will receive many messages such as this one today. I will be succinct.

Coach O’Brien is a fine man and conducts himself in an admirable manner. I am very pleased with the sense of integrity he has brought to our football program and taught to his players. However, I am concerned about the future of the football program. In year five of his tenure; I do not see progress. Instead I see a return to years one through three (with year four being an outlier). In years one through three we were not consistently competitive on the field. Our limited success in those years rested on the brilliant play of a few student athletes, and the poor play of our competitors. Some of the core strengths of a football team (talent, depth, motivation, teamwork, confidence) seem to be woefully deficient.

I believe in, “Refuse to Accept the Status Quo,” but I fear that is just what the football program is doing. I know I am not telling you anything groundbreaking, but if I do not voice my opinion I can not complain if nothing changes.

    Thank you for your time,

While TOB has his problems,he is no different than any other coach with mediocre talent. Amato had one of the greatest football players in NCSU history – Rivers. When Rivers left, Amato’s coaching ineptness was exposed and he had to go. Obrien no longer has Wilson (or Matt Ryan) and his ability to coach is questioned. Until we can recruit well, we will continue to struggle. Folks, its all about recruiting and talent. Great players MAKE great coaches. To paraphrase Pat Riley, ‘I became a great coach when Magic Johnson became my point guard’. We, for whatever reasons, have not been able to compete with the UNC’s, Clemson’s, VT’s etc. when it comes to recruiting. Unless we can find a coach who can turn this around, expect more of the same.

“The mentality of TOB and his staff is ancient. Their game plans are old school football. College football has changed…..”

Yeah, sure. Cuz Bama, LSU, and Stanford aren’t old school at all are they?

The failing of the coaching staff is that they don’t get players prepared fundamentally, and they are consistently out-coached stratgically. Top that off with their inability to recruit game changing athletes and you get blown out every 3.9 games.

Good stuff WV, I was thinking about how often TOB’s club has gotten their ass handed to them, and pretty much became through with this shiite, at 3:something pm today.

Playcalling is an issue. I am so sick and tired of the 3rd and 10s,3rd and 15s and so on when the pass goes just over the middle for 5 yards
as if the recievers are responsible for running another 10 to 12 yards without any blocking. It happens time after time. If it happens once in awhile then fine but this is almost predictable everytime we have a third down with 10 plus yards to go.

I emailed Obrien’s radio show a couple of weeks ago to ask him about his satisfaction with the recruiting after five years at the helm. Paricularly I asked about the O line since that is supposedly Obrien’s strength.

Obrien said he generally was happy with it particularly if you expect that with redshirts it takes at least 5 years to establish depth at each position. To me his answer was guarded and unethusiastic.

Looking at the blocking today there is no depth and if this is what Obrien is happy with after 5 years he was b.s.–ing me.

I look at the offense that Dabo Swinney changed at Clemson with the new OC he brought in and that is what State needs. I hate to say it but this isn’t UVa of the 1980’s. Time to get into the 21st century version of college football.

Time to go with a staff who has experience and history with the SEC and The Big Ten. And dont tell me the BIg Ten is bad. Look at the top coaches today and see where most of them started. Miles(LSU),Saban(Ala)and Meyer(Fla)all are from the Big Ten.

Maybe the head coach needs to have a Big Ten background like those guys and the smarts (like Swinney)to hire assistants who have experience with today’s offense and defensive schemes.

Unless O’Brien turns into a Mack Brown overnight and replaces all the assistants we are doomed to the fate that the single wing faced after the decade of the 50’s ended.

Excellent post. I can’t believe that we have failed in every way imaginable to capitalize on last year’s success. If we run TOB out of town, then comparisons to Herb’s departure in the media will be unbearable!

  7. Tuffy2 10/30/2011 at 4:15 AM #

Following Wolfpack football since 1967 and every time a Football coach or Basketball coach had been introduced to us I always felt like they really wanted to be hear from day one. I have never ever got that feeling from TOB since he has arrived. He just comes across as a man going through the motions and in his own little world.

I do not understand some of you that say give him another year because we are going to have to start all over again when comes to recruiting if we let him go.

HELL EVERY YEAR HE HAS BEEN HEAR IS LIKE WE ARE STARTING FROM SCRATCH.

I also feel like we would be doing him a favor if he was let go.

  8. albunde6 10/30/2011 at 7:38 AM #

I thought the strength of this staff was their ability to recruit and develop an offensive line. Where are all the lineman from the NE? Thought we would have an instant pipeline from north to south? That combined with Amato’s success in Florida, thought we were set.

    Guess I was wrong again.

I went to the UNC Wake game. I spoke to the fellow sitting next to me (a UNC fan of course) here is what I have to report

1.pessimistic about the game next week against us
    2.proud supporter of Butch Davis
3.blames Thorpe for all the problems with Baddour as runner up
4.believes that the NCAA will not impose any greater sanctions than the University has already imposed on itself

However this particular UNC fan was concerned that the NCAA would make an example of them

and here is a quote as to the scandal “it was several rouge players acting on their own that brought the program down”

finally, there were a larger number of empty seats in the stadium, especially in the newly built endzone of blueseats. Remember those are the seats that people paid for and was assured by Thorpe that BMFD would be the coach next year.

Unfortunately, Wake did not appear to have softened up the Heels for us next week.

Next week I would say it is anybody’s game.

  10. statered 10/30/2011 at 8:47 AM #

the fact of the matter is that while at State TOB has been a worse coach than Amato. If yoiu were ready to get rid of Amato you should be jumping up and down to get rid of TOB. Hell even after rivers left and the program started going down hill we were at least competitive. We still had something approaching a decent defense. Right now we are just pathetic.

  11. logarithm 10/30/2011 at 9:13 AM #

I think it’s almost entirely due to not building as strong an offensive line as needed for O’Brien’s type of team. As such, Russell Wilson was a band-aid whose unique escape skills drew attention away from the fundamental weakness of the O-line. If Glennon had been starting the last 3 years, and don’t get me wrong because Glennon is a really outstanding QB, last year would have been like 2009, and everyone would be sure O’Brien was retiring after this season. And I still think letting Russell Wilson move on was the best decision for the long-term interest of the program. So why can’t O’Brien build a big-strong O-line here?

  12. statered 10/30/2011 at 9:46 AM #

Hell he builds a strong O line and we would still suck defensively. the problem in a nut shell is that this staff just does not put in the time neccessary to be successful. We have a 9 to 5 staff and it shows up in recruiting, preparation, and execution. We need a staff that wants to work, not one eyeing early retirement.

  13. NCSU88 10/30/2011 at 9:55 AM #

So are season ticket prices going to be less next year? I feel pretty ripped off this year.

  14. logarithm 10/30/2011 at 9:56 AM #

Obviously defense is lacking too but defense isn’t [OUR] head coach’s focus. It’s weird because O’Brien was a DE in his playing days but offensive line is the key to their success and their focus…and they’re failing at their focus and failing to adapt their schemes accordingly regardless of how many hours a day they put in.

  15. 61Packer 10/30/2011 at 10:15 AM #

Great post, tuckerdorm1983. Would love to have that UNC fan write a column for this site. I saw a blue “I Support Butch” bumper sticker the other day while motoring around. Pop was right, it takes all kinds to make a world.

Took ‘nads to admit your whereabouts yesterday, more ‘nads than our coaching staff apparently has.

Tell me you’re not saying that as a good thing. Of those 29 wins, 8 have come against Liberty, South Alabama, Central Michigan, Western Carolina, Murray State, Gardner Webb, William * Mary, and Wofford.

  17. statered 10/30/2011 at 10:49 AM #

“defense isn’t the head coach’s focus”

What the hell? Every aspect of the team is the head coach’s focus. That is why he is called the head coach.

Glad to see so many comments making the same points I have been saying for 2 years — unacceptable recruiting (NR, 1,2, and some 3 star), failure to make needed changes in his enept staff, obvious inability to “fire up his players”, and his constant excuses, etc. The FACTS are there—he cannot get the job done. If he is not terminated this year alot of the fanbase will leave. I don’t donate enough $$ to be a factor nor do most but we have become the laughing stock of college football. Again, I am waiting to see if Debbie will act this December or will the powers above put the reins on her. The good old boy attitude appears to still be in control an until someone with GUTS comes on the scene we will repeat our dismal history again. The facts are there—now we will see how they spin it

  19. AdaWolf 10/30/2011 at 11:18 AM #

I have been in TOB’s corner since his first day on the job. I really felt he could bring discipline and structure to our program while also getting the most out of our pool of 2 and 3 star recruits. I am still of the opinion that he can make this happen but unfortunately do not see it happening. To me the problem is with TOB’s loyalty to his coaching staff. There need to be changes made, especially at defense. The game yesterday was one of the most frustrating I have ever watched. The amount of room our secondary was giving FSU allowed them to pick up 5 yards over and over again and many times these completions turned into larger gains because of our inability to tackle. There is a serious coaching problem on both the play calling and fundamentals level.

The only way I see this getting better is with a coaching change and while I do not think TOB needs to go, I think this is the only way we will see the needed changes made because he is not going to fire his assistants.

As for who could be his replacement…What about Leach? Yow took a chance on our Basketball coach with a less than perfect past, why not do the same with our next Football coach? Just a thought..

I used to buy in to the mantra that a new coach needed several years to develop his own players and build a program, but after watching how relatively quickly Dabo has turned things around at Clemson, I am convinced that the right man can make us relative again in short order. For the record, aside from respecting TOB’s military service, he seems like the football equivalent of HWSNBN. You would think we would learn from our mistakes…

  21. ryebread 10/30/2011 at 11:45 AM #

Fantastic original topic post. WV comes through with great analysis again. The blowout losses stat is one that is GLARING to me when compared to Amato. Amato had run his course, but he was only blown out once during his entire tenure. We were in every game, but managed to bungle them away when we lost. I saw a stat last night that said NC State was the last ACC team to start 9-0. So close….

Things under TOB feel so helpless to me, much like they did under O’Cain. Just like with O’Cain, we have a bad coach, who is in over his head and needs to go. Do we have the finances and the courage to do what is needed? I hope so, but I tend to doubt it.

For only the second time in my NC State fandom, I’d actually be okay with us losing out. I won’t actively pull against us, but I hope that it is so painfully obvious what needs to be done that even the most adamant “status quoer” will recognize that change has to happen.

Along those lines, if we’re going to lose to UNC, I hope they blow us out. If we’re going to lose by three, I hope they beat us by 3 TDs. The nightmare scenario would be beating UNC yet finishing with a 6-6 or 5-7 record. Then we don’t have to fight with the corner of our fanbase who only cares about “being clean” and beating UNC.

  22. mccarroll 10/30/2011 at 12:40 PM #

Think TOB is a fine man and I’m not a math major but I am also not enjoying so many losing games and such little hope for better. It cannot be good for recruiting.

  23. wolfonthehill 10/30/2011 at 1:08 PM #

The moral of the story is that our next coach’s name damn well better not be O’Something…

  24. mak4dpak 10/30/2011 at 2:16 PM #

Debbie Yow has gotten so many emails after the FSU embarrassment, that she stated she can no longer reply to each individual, instead replied to all in one email, addressing our concerns, and stated that not until the end of season that she would sit down and have discussions with TOB, and the direction of our football program, whether with him, or without him. Here is hoping without him. With our fans, and facilities, we clearly deserve better. It is time to move on to this century. TOB and his staff haven’t got a clue.
