The Abyss 34, State 27 (Sunday 10am Update)

News & Observer:

“They had more energy than we did,” O’Brien said. “You can’t do that, especially on the road in a conference game. We have to look for leadership. We certainly haven’t gotten any out of anybody on this football team.”

You can say that again, coach. Keep in mind, leadership starts at the top.

*****

That went about as well as many of us expected. The losing in Winston-Salem (1997, ’99, ’03-’11) will continue at least until 2013; there are students that were in elementary school the last time State won in Winston. Once again, Jim Grobe outcoached TOB and Wake Forest was the better team.

Stat of the Day: TOB is now 0-11 on the road against Atlantic Division opponents. Wolfpack Unlimited!

“TOB is shaping up to be exactly who we thought he was. He is a program builder but has yet to be able to make that big step. I don’t think this year will be any different.”

Whoa, whoa, wait a minute. This statement is contradictory. Who we are told O’Brien IS is a coach that builds programs and has a solid all-around team. What we saw today was NO ONE proficient at too much of ANYTHING. Defense was soft, offense was ineffective… there was no built program despite this being Tom O’Brien’s fifth season of program building. I have to be honest, I don’t see the coach that “everyone thought he was”.

“NCStatePride. Did he no win nine games and come within one game of the ACC Championship last year. Last season is the only season he hasn’t had a lot of key injuries in his time at NC State. I know that injuries are a part of the game but they are not the coach fault.”

So wait, wait, wait……. 5 years of crap (minus one season), and it’s ok for us to continue to make excuses for injuries? So lets say Tom O’Brien has a 5-win season this year. Do you claim that we can’t hold O’Brien responsible for only being successful 20% of the time he coaches?!?!?!?!?!?! Man, I wish I could work a job where I only had to successfully do what I’m asked to do 20% of the time.

Hasn’t been mentioned much, but there were multiple plays in the 2nd half where the whistle blew that the clock should have stopped but was allowed to run off an extra 4-6 seconds. Talk about home cooking.

  3. Ashman87 09/10/2011 at 8:05 PM #

Wulfpack, your last post says it all.

  4. coach13 09/10/2011 at 8:06 PM #

Well, I am as pissed as everyone here. Two things…I’m not gonna break my neck to catch or go to a State game moving foward. My expectations have been crushed. I will wait til end of season to start my replace the coach chants. We just aren’t very good. I am 39. Not sure I will see State be a relevent football team in my lifetime.

  5. wolfpackdawg 09/10/2011 at 8:08 PM #

We suck. I was there and left at the half. If someone calls me a bad fan then kiss my arse. I really think our shitty recruiting is catching up with us. If one or two key guys go down..ie Green & Sweezy…then it has a major effect…..The Russell Wilson curse is alive as well.

All the “experts” on this board are getting to be quite annoying. Here are the facts:

    1) Wake Forest has a VERY good team this year. Keep in mind, they played Syracuse on the road in the Dome and almost won. If their QB had remained healthy, they probably would have won that game.

    2) Glennon was a bit rusty at first, but ended up with +/- 300 yards of offense. Not bad for a second starting game.

    3) For most teams: First ACC road game + new QB = loss

    4) Our All ACC tight-end dropped several passes today – atypical.

    5) Despite playing poorly on defense, we were still in the game right up until the last few minutes.

Bottom line, it is still too early to determine what type of team we have. I am willing to wait and see how the team responds to this loss. We will know soon enough whether we can start planning for a December/January bowl game.

  7. TheAliasTroll 09/10/2011 at 8:14 PM #

Syracuse is tied with Rhode Island right now, expert.

edit: My bad, awesome Syracuse destroyed Rhode Island 21-14.

Look for Wake in a BCS bowl, guyz! lol

It’s an awful loss, no matter how you try to spin it.

  8. Rick 09/10/2011 at 8:15 PM #

I love how the “experts” can polish the turd.

This was a typical bad TOB loss. It even had the standard cowardly refusal to go for it on 4th down.

  9. Khan 09/10/2011 at 8:17 PM #

It’s the same movie year after year….same directors, producers, etc,….different cast.

    1) We have average to maaaaybe slightly above average, depending on how you define average. But for some reason, we get all weird and think we have lots of talent. Mysterious.

    2) We have an average coaching staff, but once again, the definition of “average” becomes important.

    3) We run a predictable offense for the first 1/2 – 3/4 of the game.

    4) We have success in the hurry-up, but once we realize that, we slow down to normal speed.

    5) We seem to be out-coached for at least half of the games during any given season. And during those games, it takes us at least half the game before we get a clue of how to adjust.

    6) Our defense is consistently not too good.

    7) Special teams…welllllllll…..

8 ) We don’t win divisional road games.

    9) TOB can fold his arms like nobody’s business.

    10) Adam and Joe will laugh at all of us tomorrow.

  10. Wulfpack 09/10/2011 at 8:19 PM #

Nobody is saying the season is over. But the fact is we now have a pretty good idea of who TOB and company is and what kind of personnel we have. We have played poorly for the better part of two games, against very medicore (probably generous there) competition. You’re right, I’m no expert. But I do know if we play like we have the past 2 games, we’ll lose more than we win, even in the ACC.

  11. Chucks Chesticles 09/10/2011 at 8:20 PM #

This loss is totally on the defense and Archer. We got zero pressure by blitzing. Secondary and D line was inept. Glennon looked solid and I think he will turn into a very good QB. On to next week.

  12. bTHEredterror 09/10/2011 at 8:31 PM #

I was pissed he didn’t go for it on 4th at the 8:00 minute mark, too. But if George Bryan doesn’t alligator arm a 3rd and 10 routine catch, who knows if his plan wouldn’t have worked?

And you always go down swinging, I’m with Pride and others on that one. Enough timeouts or not, its the principle of making your opponent beat you rather than giving up.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not happy we lost. I just saw it coming. It’s a trap game whenever you play Wake, Herbstreit described them perfectly a few years back. He said you come in there, and they have their little subdued HS stadium, and their all undersized, and low and behold by the time you quit sleepwalking you’re in a dogfight with a well coached team.

I choose to look at it like this, State played a bad 1st half, their first game against FBS competition for many players, had a 21 point 300 yard second half and learned a valuable lesson. I’mma let the season unfold, see how the staff coaches them up, see what happens when 4 of our best players get back on the field and then after the Maryland game, if they are 5-7 I won’t argue with the others if they are pissed and want blood. But I suspect they’ll be at worst 8-4 and we’ll be bitching about how this one kept us out of a Peach Bowl New Years’.

  13. LRM 09/10/2011 at 8:35 PM #

“But I suspect they’ll be at worst 8-4 and we’ll be bitching about how this one kept us out of a Peach Bowl New Years’.

Seriously? You see seven more wins for us? Wow.

  14. sundropdrinker13 09/10/2011 at 8:36 PM #

Ok, 24-41 is 58% completion. Not great, but not terrible. There were dropped passes, passes that the receivers were somehow able to catch last year, but not this year. You know, passes that hit them in the freaking hands. Yes, I’m talking about you, Mr. All-American, All-Conference TE Bryan. He’s not the only one, but he’s been the most prominent one, especially on very important downs. The offense was better this week than last, and they played against a better defense than last week. So to say that Glennon is the reason we lost this game is one of the STUPIDEST statements that can be made. The defense, however, was atrocious. Coach’s usually have a 5 year plan. If by the 5th year nothing has changed, then they are gone. I should say AD’s, not coaches. After 5 years, a coach will have his players in, they will know the system well, and SHOULD perform well. With TOB, it is not the case. Last year was an anomaly. I’ve been a TOB supporter since we hired him, but I am now done with him. We are almost exactly the same as we were when we hired him. He’s like Herb freaking Sendek. Has a good year or 2, and that’s about it. Does just enough to keep his job. No variation from the game plan by either coach. TOB is a good man, but an average coach. If there are some big money boosters that pay attention to this site, then it is time for you all to start getting something together for a proven elite winner. UF did it with Urban Meyer, why can’t we do it with Boise State’s coach, or BYU’s, or some other small program that has been doing GREAT? Or bring in a retired coach that still has a decade or more on them?

  15. TOBtime 09/10/2011 at 8:40 PM #

Man I have had it with Archers defense. There simply is no excuse. And what the HECK is up with Bryan? AGAIN he’s dropping passes.

O-line and D. ALways the same story early at NC State. EZU would beat us like a stray dog right now.

  16. NCStatePride 09/10/2011 at 8:43 PM #

I have seen 10X more people getting mad and lashing out at “horrible Glennon bashers” than I’ve actually seen Glennon bashers. Let’s drop the unnecessary defense of Glennon here. Just because people are saying Glennon did poor doesn’t mean they are blaming him for this loss.

  17. codebrown 09/10/2011 at 8:46 PM #

I’m getting this apathetic feeling again. Thank you Tom O’Cain…I mean O’Brian…

  18. Ed89 09/10/2011 at 8:47 PM #

Anyone who thinks it’s acceptable for N.C. State University to lose to Wake Forest in football should not have anything to do with our Athletic Department. A coach in his fifth year should not lose to Wake Forest…period.

  19. tuckerdorm1983 09/10/2011 at 8:48 PM #

I was actually impressed by Glennon. I thought he showed signs of being the quarterback we expected. Its just taking some time for him to settle down. As for the Defense. How many times must we let them have 3 and long and let them off the hook?

since more than half of the teamsin div1 made bowls that’s nothing really to celebrate and I never said you were negative I said you were foolishly optimistic. I’m being negative. glennon went 24 of 41 look no further for why we lost. he missed open reciever after open receiver. most of his completions were off target. we will be lucky to win 4 this year. if you still think we are ok I need some of what you’ve.been smoking.”

NCStatePride, THIS is what I was defending against.

  21. bTHEredterror 09/10/2011 at 8:51 PM #

Believe it or not, I do LRM. USA, Cincy, Central Mich, BC/UVa, UNC, GT, Clemson. The only certain losses to me right now are FSU and Maryland. Everyone else I’ve seen has problems. TOB gets outcoached by Grobe every time, and Jimbo’s got too many horses, but the coaching in the ACC is pisspoor. London is a wild card, I’ve seen very little of them since he took over but they are taking care of business. Maryland has O’brien and he is the best QB in the league to me. Everyone else is gettable. Provided I’m right and we get better of course. If I’m not, it won’t be the first or last time.

  22. NCStatePride 09/10/2011 at 8:53 PM #

Oh, Glennon definitely had a nice performance towards the end of the game. He seemed to not lock onto his receivers so much and really pulled through with those long-bombs. Still, it’s unfortunate that the defense and offensive line’s performance was so poor that any improvements we saw were masked.

And sundropdrinker, I figured there was someone in particular you were talking to, but still… generally speaking I see a TON of people saying, “STOP BLAMING GLENNON FOR THE LOSS”, but I only see a handful of people blaming Glennon. Anyway… I agree that it’s silly to claim Glennon lost the game, especially when it was obviously a defensive lapse.

  23. blpack 09/10/2011 at 8:53 PM #

Seems like a lot of the same comments from ’99 when we went over there and got whipped. They played with more emotion and urgency. Don’t know why. I’ve given up on two of our Sr WRs. They have to win me back. We talked about covering Givens, didn’t see it. Very disgusting. On to South Alabama.

  24. wolfpack15 09/10/2011 at 9:06 PM #

Second chance for Jim Tressel? Anyone?

  25. NCSU84 09/10/2011 at 9:11 PM #

Why is everyone belittling Wake Forest? I do recall that they won an ACC Football Championship a few years back – can’t say the same for us. The WF teams under Grobe are NOT the same WF teams that we are accustomed to. Let’s see how our team handles the next two games. Will the defense show up? Does Glennon continue to improve? Can Bryan catch a ball? All questions to be answered.
