The Abyss 34, State 27 (Sunday 10am Update)

News & Observer:

“They had more energy than we did,” O’Brien said. “You can’t do that, especially on the road in a conference game. We have to look for leadership. We certainly haven’t gotten any out of anybody on this football team.”

You can say that again, coach. Keep in mind, leadership starts at the top.

*****

That went about as well as many of us expected. The losing in Winston-Salem (1997, ’99, ’03-’11) will continue at least until 2013; there are students that were in elementary school the last time State won in Winston. Once again, Jim Grobe outcoached TOB and Wake Forest was the better team.

Stat of the Day: TOB is now 0-11 on the road against Atlantic Division opponents. Wolfpack Unlimited!

    At the end of the season, apologies for this game still need to be handed out by the staff acknowledging their ( lack of ) performance this game, regardless of how many (few) games we win…

  2. patientwuf 09/10/2011 at 7:10 PM #

    We were out coached in both games this year. TOB’s trust in Archer is his own.

    State has a nice bunch of talent, with no where to go. That smacks coaching. Sorry for being a boo bug, but this is another embarrassment for the players and fans. Archer is dismal, and TOB is living a dream. Wake up.

    “They run Iso on first down a lot because Wake had a few problems with it, and it helped get Glennon ahead of the sticks. I agree with the sentiment that they never ran play action off the Iso or threw a wrinkle to steal some yards.”

    …the problem is that Bible calls that play against every opponent he faces. He did it last week against Liberty, too.

    since more than half of the teamsin div1 made bowls that’s nothing really to celebrate and I never said you were negative I said you were foolishly optimistic. I’m being negative. glennon went 24 of 41 look no further for why we lost. he missed open reciever after open receiver. most of his completions were off target. we will be lucky to win 4 this year. if you still think we are ok I need some of what you’ve.been smoking.

    MY ANALYSIS
    Wake forest and nc state are very similar programs. We get in 2 and 3 star kids and try to turn them into 4 and 5 star kids. Sometimes it works, but often it does not. We field teams that are good, but not great. Sometimes we beat teams we should not. Often we lose to teams we should not. 9 wins a season is about the most we can ever expect, but often we struggle to win 6.
    As for the national stage, we are never significant and never have been. We have a class A program, but top 25 ranking is rarely attained. We are undersized, overpowered by most teams that have a large number of NFL prospects on their team.
    We could try to hire a new coach to bring in 5 star players no matter what the cost to our school and our integrity. I doubt such a scheme would work and only a sucker school would try such a bone headed maneuver.
    The good news is that we might beat the Heels this year.

    Why do we spot them 2 touchdowns in the first quarter. Correct me if I am wrong, but almost certain that the first half has played out the same in the last 3 games at the Grove.

    17 to 6 score, 4 the down, so percentage call is to go for it? Don’t try the field goal, and make it 17 to 9?

    This is going to be a dismal, dismal year. Something needs to change. The first series of the year against liberty (both offensively and defensively) are completely indicative of how this team plays all year. Three and outs with basic non elaborate plays, and getting worn out down the field…

  9. redcanine 09/10/2011 at 7:22 PM #

    Was it poor coaching? Maybe. No State fan can honestly say that the team made a great effort today. Dropped passes, costly penalties, shitty tackling, and poor play calling was today’s recipe for failure.

    I agree that DY should light a fire under this program’s butt. If someone gets burned they should step aside.

    Once again our season has been defined before the middle of September. I’m glad that no one in South Georgia cares who we played or the outcome. There are many things more important than the final score of a football game and I am thankful for good health and a paycheck – but it is tough to be a Pack fan.

    ^ I’m thankful that we didn’t lose by 30

    amen to that loco

    Wake is better in football.
    WFU has a championship.
    We are not similar.
    We are State.

  14. graywolf 09/10/2011 at 7:30 PM #

    Poor performance for staff and players. Going to be a very long season for the pack.

  15. Wulfpack 09/10/2011 at 7:31 PM #

    “History” wins again.

    Charles Barkley would say “Turble”, not “Terrible”. Either way, it was a vanilla loss to a team we probably have no business losing to talent-wise. The problem is, talent alone does not win games, and Wake looked to be the much better team for 3 quarters. They are surely better coached.

    TOB is shaping up to be exactly who we thought he was. He is a program builder but has yet to be able to make that big step. I don’t think this year will be any different.

    Lastly, the Wolfpack fans guaranteeing victory, some even by wide margins, need to wake up. We are NC State. It’s just never been that easy for us. In fact, we are 0-for-the-last-5 in Winston. Stop pontificating like misinformed, conceded, snot-nosed UNX fans.

    South Alabama will come out and do the same thing Wake did. Remember a few years ago when we got down to ezu by 21+? The COACHING STAFF ISN’T PREPARED, AT ALL!

    Archer is as big a joke as everything that’s gone on at unx…the guy has never, ever been any good. Why would you expect things to change? His defense has always given up POINTS and YARDAGE, nothing has changed…he’s who he is and he’s NOT A DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR. When he was at Kentucky they basically demoted him…things are still the same. If he were not here, we’d be much better.

    He got his job by recommendation, not by the fact that he’s a good defensive coordinator.

  17. redcanine 09/10/2011 at 7:35 PM #

    We were as tough as a roll of Charmin.

    If Glennon didn’t telegraph a pass, we dropped it. We couldn’t even slow WFUs offense down. Just a lousy game…we have good reason to be upset.

  18. Wulfpack 09/10/2011 at 7:44 PM #

    From the N&O:

    “Wake Forest had lost seven straight ACC games and 11 in a row to conference teams outside of Duke before Saturday”…

    Good golly. We sure are the Deacs’ “get-right” game.

  19. TheAliasTroll 09/10/2011 at 7:44 PM #

    I’m wondering what in the hell could Archer be telling these guys? Does he tell our DBs to run away from the receivers?

  20. rockpile 09/10/2011 at 7:45 PM #

    i think tob is a good coach. i think his players develop. but,… he cant motivate for shit. and we lose games we should not lose. whether it’s maryland for a spot in the acc championship, or wake starting off, we get blown off the ball. that comes from the staff. we have sendek w a headset. ok…but will never win a g..d. thing. btw, ive never been into grammar.!

    The only positive I can think of is that, hey, if VT can lose to JMU then we can lose to Wake Forest.

    My actual thoughts are far worse than that. I’m wondering if TOB will have to retire after next season.

    Still, I was one of the ones who said he was worried about WF after last week. I’m afraid our football team just isn’t very good. Wilson made up for a lot of deficiencies last year.

  22. camel77 09/10/2011 at 7:48 PM #

    NCStatePride. Did he no win nine games and come within one game of the ACC Championship last year. Last season is the only season he hasn’t had a lot of key injuries in his time at NC State. I know that injuries are a part of the game but they are not the coach fault. State fans are flickle. If I recall last year, some fans were calling for his head after some games but at the end of season, he was the best thing since apple pie. This exuberance led to high expectation this season.

    I am upset that he didn’t use his timeouts in both halves (more so in the first half). It would have been a freaking miracle if by using the two time outs had benefit State. Still we should let TOB coach the team and see what happens. State can’t afford or is good for the program to change coaches every five years.

    I was at the game today and it was amazing we had a chance to even it up. Some of my observations:

    – Offensively I think we’ll be alright if Archer doesn’t get too conservative, but we’ll need to open it up from now on because we can’t stop anyone;
    – Which brings me to my second point – our defense, especially the secondary, is a liability;
    – I don’t understand why we had so much trouble with our footing; we had WR’s and DB’s slipping all over the place. MG’s interception was because the receiver slipped down.
    – We’ve got to start catching balls and George Bryan needs to start seeing a shrink. There’s many reasons we lost today and GB’s key drops are one;
    – Good points mentioned about play action; we never really used it until middle of the third quarter. With how well we were running we should have taken advantage earlier;
    – Did I mention our defense?

    BTW – With regard to wanting a TOB apology – TOB pretty much did apologize in his post game comments; he stated pretty sternly a couple times that things will be fixed this week. We’ll see…

    ESPN3 does not have this game available for replay. That’s probably a good thing.

  25. redcanine 09/10/2011 at 7:51 PM #

    TAT, you just may be right. We covered them like stink on roses…
