Open College Football Entry – State 28-10 to start 4th Qtr

We wanted to open a college football discussion entry for everyone sitting around today on a cold and rainy Saturday.

It is currently 3:54 and…

…Clemson defeated the defending National Champion from the SEC by 14.

…Georgia Tech defeated a team from the Big 12 by 50.

…Maryland fell short in a comeback bid against West Virginia.

…Butch Davis is attending his second consecutive UNC football game as a spectator…and, UNC is not unhappy about it because if he wasn’t there Kenan Stadium might not have any fans.

…DUKE WINS!!! at Boston College. Wow…I could not love this more! Congrats to Cutcliffe. Couldn’t love it more for BC.

Really good day ACC wise. Clemson seems to be for real. Still don’t know what to make of UNC, but they seem to be playing for Withers. FSU has some serious talent. We have a LOT of work to do if we are going to be any sort of factor in conference play. Right now, we are in the bottom third of the pecking order.

  2. the reality 09/17/2011 at 9:48 PM #

^^ Yeah, but don’t forget, one is taller.

Clemson was playing some damn good true freshmen.

Jacory Harris, the Miami QB, seems determnined to keep OSU in this ballgame.

Watching OU / FSU. What a difference in athletic ability compared to our guys. Same thing with Clemson today.

Now I’m watching Cuse/SC, just to hear Gus Johnson on the call.

Some schools make and take decisive quick moves, and unlike some people I have no problem with it. These moves can hurt a program but with the right person in the drivers seat(DY) they can be very positive.

You either recruit well or you coach them up to being competitive. When neither happens as is the situation under TOB then it is time. Besides the obvious issues of releasing a coach without waiting until the year ends to me shows coaches and potential recruits out there we are in it to win. If someone tells me that kind of tactic will scare people away then I will tell you to roll the tape of DY introducing our new BB coach. I agree with her but I’ll take beyond unc and duke.

That is my take on how we get to the next level. Did anyone see the Clemson coach at the end of the game? Yes!

  7. Skeeball 09/17/2011 at 11:09 PM #

Either Archer goes or I think you have to look at TOB. I would accept the “status qou” on defense but i dont think we have that. What is the ranking on D 90+ ???? or are we above 100. After next 2 weeks we will have more holes defense than sponge bob.

  8. Wolfy__79 09/17/2011 at 11:12 PM #

i’m not a fan of playing competitive football with south alabama but i’m also not ready to throw the towel in on TOB. his defense is not good.. the offense, shows signs of life but i can certainly agree with the sentiment on here. the acc season doesn’t look to pleasing right now!

regardless of the present state of state.. i think we can be very competitive and win big in all sports. the problem is it has to happen from the top down.. as repeatedly mentioned here today and many before. although i’m not ready to throw the towel in.. TOB better have this team winning more than 7 games or he’s toast imo.

our talent level… i’ve/we’ve? thought all along that TOB would coach/build them up? i’m with the majority of sfn’ers… we look undersized and are getting pushed around by everyone. this really concerns me. i really don’t understand how any coach worth half his salt can get by with this? things need to get better quickly!

We should win at B.C. (I say that, but then again, we should have won at Wake two years ago).

  10. tvp1 09/17/2011 at 11:29 PM #

In addition to an energetic recruiter, I think we need, for lack of a better term, a gimmick. An innovative, unconventional scheme. The prototypes for me are Leach at Texas Tech and Rodriguez at WVU. Leach winning 9-10 games every year in the Big 12 south was so impressive. I dont think we will go far running very conventional schemes like we do now.

  11. NCStatePride 09/17/2011 at 11:31 PM #

^^We *should* have won at Wake (superstitions aside).

The thing that so many people forget is that when Tom O’Brien ‘arrove’ at NC State, his entire staff followed him, except for one person: his defensive coordinator. It’s almost like O’Brien came to NC State and had an “Oh shit” moment, causing him to hire the first person he could think of that he felt he could do decent with. That is fine and completely understandable. The thing is, he’s had 4 years now to see that the whole “Archer/Oh shit” hire wasn’t a good long-term solution, yet he refuses to fix the problem.

I don’t know how willing I am to keep a “good coach” who can’t make staffing decisions to move the program forward. I’m not throwing the towel in on O’Brien’s coaching, but I’m getting very close to wanting to get rid of O’Brien simply because he refuses to be mutually exclusive with Archer, a sub-standard defensive coordinator.

HD at ESPN reports that Terrell Manning went down with a knee injury in the first half today and didn’t return. Anyone know anything about this? If so, that’s three possible D starters out for Thursday!

  13. Wolfy__79 09/17/2011 at 11:42 PM #

i don’t know about manning but that’s my first and only question right now! i didn’t see him in the game.. i missed much of the first half. any updates?

let tenuta run our defense entirely. he would be great! hell, if nothing else bring chuck in as an interim DC. i don’t care, archer is not working!

  14. Ashman87 09/18/2011 at 12:06 AM #

Yes. The Manninng report is True.

  15. Classof89 09/18/2011 at 12:11 AM #

was at game tonight. We looked as crappy in a win as I’ve ever seen. If Manning is out, this season is doomed. This year’s defense is equally as putrid as the 2009 version. They couldn’t make a play on 3rd down and get off the field to save their lives. USA converted a 3rd and 21, and too many 3rd and 8+ for me to count.

  16. Plz2BStateFan 09/18/2011 at 12:32 AM #

2010 defense got pressure on QB’s often

That is the reason we suck.

Our secondary’s weaknesses were hidden last year due to the blitzs.

We have to get a pass rush for this to work.

  17. Solesky 09/18/2011 at 12:57 AM #

How many fumbles on the snap did we have? About 3? That’s f’ed. Anyway, my real 2 cents is to back up everybody who’s talking about the defense. I’m a Baltimore Ravens fan, so I know that even defense alone can win the Super Bowl. Lack of defense messed us up against Wake and I’m worried about it going into our conference competition.

  18. Tuffy2 09/18/2011 at 3:54 AM #

I was trying to find either a blog I started or one I commented on a few years back on why TOB was successful at BC and how it has not transpired here but I can’t. Anyway, It was all about the defensive coach he had who is the head coach now. Like NCStatePride said, people might have forgot about that very key element.

Every team has key injuries and adapt. What did they do this past week at practice?

I hate to say this about my team but I am bored when I watch them play. I don’t expect us to be winning 11 to 12 games with this staff as that is an unrealistic thought. The amazing thing is we are 3 games into the season and they are playing like are record is 2-7 and a team going through the motions to end the year. TOB might have lost them already.

  19. packalum44 09/18/2011 at 4:20 AM #

We are awful. I have had enough of the “State Way”. Suck ass and be okay with it b/c we suck ass the “right” way. Poor recruiting, poor coaching and self imposed austerity. We will get crushed by real competition.

Our O-Line is pathetic and our defense….well let’s just say I miss Amato. Yeah I said it.

I am in total agreement with that. Every year, Archer’s defense sucks yet TOB apparently will not do anything about it. I’m not on the fire TOB bandwagon yet but I have one foot on the step and just might jump on if something isn’t done soon. I also would say the postition coaches are to blame as well since they either do not teach “players to wrap up” on tackles or let the players ignore them. Entirely too many attempts to just “hit” the ball carrier instead of making a good tackle.

I am considering quit being a Wolfpack fan and becoming a Noles fan.

This is year 5 and we are suppose to be in contention for the ACC Championship. TOB is suppose to finally put our team on the right track. We are going to be lucky to win 6 games this year. The RW question be damned, he ain’t superman.

Weak on defense, weak on offense and weak on special teams. The only great improvement I have seen is with the kicking game.

I am hoping that against these “lesser teams” somehow we were not motivated and the jinx of Wake was a fluke. Thurs night will reveal just what we are looking at. A thrashing may be the tipping point where I start doing the tomahawk chop

  22. BamaPack 09/18/2011 at 8:06 AM #

TOB is coasting along toward retirement. That attitude is likely hurting us on the recruiting trail.

Either that…or players would rather play anywhere but State.

  23. GoldenChain 09/18/2011 at 8:36 AM #

I only have one request if we end up looking for a coach: PLEASE mods delete the “Les Miles has contacted DY”, “mark my words, Bob Stoops will be named our coach tomorrow!”, “David Shaw wants to come to State, mark it down!”, etc & soforth.

  24. ncst8zr1 09/18/2011 at 9:40 AM #

I have attended all three games this year and am not excited about attending any more, but I will. As others have pointed out, our offensive line is not effecive, even against mediocre defenses. When it’s third down and two or three yards for a first, I have absolutely no confidence in our ability to rush for the first down, and this is NOT where we should be after 5 years of TOB. How will we look against some real defensive talent, like Clemson or FSU, or for that matter about anyone on our schedule? I will be surprised if Glennon survives the pass rushes that are coming, and we surely cannot rely upon running the football. Glennon needs to be able to get rid of the football before he is sacked, but his apparent lack of mobility limits him in that regard, and such is seting him up for some ferocious hits against good defenses.
Regarding our defense, until we put pressure on the QB and “get on” someone in the secondary, we’ll continue to be eaten alive on 3rd and long. Again, it’s not going to get any easier, we’re facing much better offenses than we have to-date.
There are a few bright spots, Glennon throws the ball accurately, T. Palmer is exciting, T. Graham has improved and makes big plays, our place kicking future appears to be bright (although I expected our punting to be better), and I am sure that a number of individual accomplishments are not being appreciated like they should be.
I should say that I did not play football past high school and have never coached a team, so I am certainly no expert and therefore probably not qualified to say anything I’ve said here. I look forward to some positive comments about State FB from those of you who know more than I about the subject. I try to support the players–I know they work really hard and are more disappointed at the results than I, and they DO play for the university that I love. As for TOB and crew, I don’t think it’s gonna work, and they probably will not (or should not) be here next year, but PLEASE prove me wrong.
    And don’t forget: GO PACK.

A lot of negative comments restating what I have been saying for two years about the situation we have at State: TOB cannot recruit, because he can’t recruit he states that he places no emphasis on the star ranking system (he can only get unranked players),he will not address (fire)his inept defensive coordinator, he has no appeal for good recruits, he feeds us the baloney that 1 and 2 star atheletes can compete with 4 and 5 star players. Bigtime football requires bigtime Coaches and Athletes. Last year’s record was good but all one has to do is evaluate the future by looking at what we have recruited, how we are playing with no changes expected by TOB—KEEP DOING THE SAME THING AND EXPECT DIFFERENT RESULTS. College football is a business and the results TOB has produced would cause any company to make drastic changes. Doing the same old thing will get you one thing— Run over by your competition
