#21 Georgia Tech vs NC State Preview: …whatever…

Despite how this season may be turning out, here are some highlights on GT.  If this analysis is a bit leaner than usual, I’m assuming everyone will forgive me for not exactly being motivated to preview too much for Tom’s 5th-year football team (I’m even avoiding calling it the “2011 NC State Football Team”).

Georgia Tech

  •  QB: Tevin Washington, 27/42 for 821 yards (almost 20 yards per attempt).
  • Offense is #1 in the country for overall points scored, 2nd in the country rushing.
  • One of only three remaining undefeated ACC teams (#13 Clemson, #11 Virginia Teach are the other two).
  • Averaging over 7 yards per carry.
  • Averaging just under 30 yards per completion.
  • Four receivers and three running backs have TDs for the year.
  • Seven players have season-long receptions or rushes for 50 yards or more.
  • Kicker: Justin Moore, 28/28 XPA & 3/5 FGA, 2/4 between 30-49 yards.

I’m not going to do much more in the form of analysis for this game, but I still wanted to allow readers the opportunity to discuss/predict/analyze/meltdown.  Regardless, let’s still wish our boys luck and try to support the work the players are doing.

I hate to say it but unfortunately, it’s going to be a blood bath. Of course, they have a chance to prove me wrong (as they often do).

    y2k,

what you said about turnovers. Our only hope is to keep the score close somehow and have a chance at the end.

Maybe NOW Gentry will get several carries. I would think that his 250# of solid muscle would wear out the GT “D” more effectively than the backs who give up 50# or so. Since they’re not getting anywhere, we may as well try to wear them down a little more, even if we don’t get more yardage. (I’ll send coach an email, ok? ;-])

This season is so disappointing, so far – at a time when I was hoping that NCSU could make up some ground on some “other” nearby teams, in terms of recruits and new fans. A win tomorrow would go a LOOOOOOONG way to turn this season around.

We will not be able to stop the GT offensive machine. Our only hope at keeping this close is to be +3 or better in the TO margin and convert them all into scores. If we can spot ourselves 21 points, we might have a chance.

    JSR beat me to it.

I expect the warm-ups to be close, but it will get away from us very quickly after that.

  6. ryebread 09/30/2011 at 1:09 PM #

Packfan28: At the rate this season is going, we’ll have an injury during the warm up, the players will get lost trying to find the field, TOB will then throw them under the bus, and then the game will finally kick.

  7. nav 09/30/2011 at 1:20 PM #

I feel good about this game. Not because I think we can win. I don’t think we will. But, because I can finally go into a ACC game with zero anxiety for once.

If O’Brien puts Broscius in as a “running” QB, he needs a psych eval immediately following the game. Have you seen Broscius? OTOH, I think some wildcat formations with James Washington or Creecy may not be a bad idea. Glennon as a wideout…hell, at 6′ 7″, just throw up a jump ball. May toughen him up a bit…I keed, I keed.

    Ed,

I’m only half serious. But I hope to see some creativity. Yeah, the wildcat.

Regarding Brosius, he looks like a big, strong boy who can maybe run like a fullback. Sort of like Tebo. Just wishin’ and hopin’.

Okay, give me the Pack and 40 points and I will take all bets. I’m absolutely convinced that TOB’s coaching ability and MG’s arm will easily, (EASILY I SAY!!) keep us within 39 points.
Actually I like the “let ’em score” strategy, we’re less likely to lose more defensive players and therefore in a few weeks be able to field a reasonable excuse for a defense once we get our line back.

I admire and respect those of you that will go to the game and cheer on the red & white. I can watch a noble effort and hold my head high even in a loss, but I haven’t seen that this year. It feels like TOB has quit fighting. He’s already said something about years 1, 3 & 5 being decimated by injuries. Didn’t we hire the world’s greatest strength and conditioning coach a few months ago to oversee all Pack athletics? Shouldn’t that help with injuries?

  11. pack44fan 09/30/2011 at 4:37 PM #

You know you are in trouble when the coaching staff thinks that a hand off to the full back, a misdirection running play, a toss sweep, and a screen pass are all GADGET plays!

  12. graywolf 09/30/2011 at 4:37 PM #

I’ll be at the game as i always am but i can fact the reality that we are in dire straits and are likely to get a butt whooping from GT. Would we have been better off with Johnson ad opposed to TOB….one can only speculate.

Not sure if there is a lot to speculate…

Obviously, today PJ has the upper hand. While it is fun to casually watch his offense when it’s clicking, I don’t know if I could take when it isn’t. It can be ugly. Of course, it’s so rare and difficult to defend, that most the time it is successful. And you can really open up the passing game.

PJ, though, can be a complete and total arse on the sideline when things aren’t going his way. I know, I know, many of the great ones are. One thing is for sure, he’s much different than TOB. He won’t go down quietly or without a fight.

NCStatePride, please re-read exactly what I said before criticizing my post in bold print.

I said that I believed that there was no reason we couldn’t compete vs (against) the same team (GT) we beat by 17 in Atlanta last season. This is a team that finished with a losing record last season and has the fewest number of returning starters of any ACC team. I didn’t say that I thought WE (Wolfpack) were better, just that I think Tech is basically the same team. And it’s a fact that home field for us, moreso than for many ACC teams, is always a big boost. Anyone who thinks this will be another 44-14 whomping is the one who’s lost all credible objectively, in my humble, straight-faced opinion.

I’m going to stand on what I said. I do think we have a good chance to make a real game of this. I didn’t say we were going to win (I predicted Tech by 38-24), but I don’t see us getting kicked around for a second straight game.

Remember…”past performace in not necessarily an indication of future results” Would I bet money on State? No. But, I have not given up on the season yet,a bit too early. Ask the Rays and the Cardinals, even better ask the Deadsox and the Braveless.

  17. timberwolf 09/30/2011 at 11:11 PM #

That is why the game is played.

  18. tjfoose1 10/01/2011 at 1:52 AM #

We have a 245 lb O-lineman walk-on from Campbell in the 2deep DL rotation.

Given our situation on the DL, playing GT is a worst case scenario.

It’ll be ugly early and often. I’ll be conservative and put the line @ GT -33.5.

The NCAA record for single game team rushing yards is 760+, set by OU against K-State in 1988. We might need an update after tomorrow.

  19. mak4dpak 10/01/2011 at 7:10 AM #

Okay here is how it should go, our offense finally finds a running game, and we milk the clock for all we can, keeping the ball out of GTs hands, and giving the defense plenty of rest, and squeak out a win. Now wouldn’t that be nice. It never hurts to dream. Sometimes dreams come true.

  20. JSRy2k 10/01/2011 at 3:02 PM #

Why does Kahut even have to see the field? 3 DT’s is thin, but surely Kuhn, Cato-Bishop and McGill could share time and make it the whole game.
