Would This Be The “UNC Lunatic Fringe”?

So keep it civil (unless Kenan Stadium needs to be carpet bombed) when “imploring” the “Chancellor and BOT” to “step down.”

Keep your emails, calls, letters and every known way of correspondence with the Chancellor and BOT imploring them to step down and for God’s sake have no hand in the hiring of the new AD. If Bill Friday and Holden Thorp hire our new AD then we might as well carpet bomb Kenan and hope insurance will pay. Let’s keep the correspondence civil, succinct, and on point.

After reading that piece, I am not 100% sure because he is pretty equivocal on the subject, but I think Deems is of the opinion that the current UNC administration has de-emphasized football.

I’m not sure I understand. Does he think they de-emphasized football by firing Butch?

  2. YogiNC 08/01/2011 at 2:47 PM #

The need to carpet bomb Keenan has existed since the day it was built. Why is it any different now?

  3. TallyHo 08/01/2011 at 3:03 PM #

Forgot which board I read it on, but I saw a good comment on this. To paraphrase, they might have “de-emphasized football” when they fired Butch, but they de-emphasized academics when they hired him, to no such outrage from Lurch.

The volcano is close to errupting in Chapel Hill. Oops, did I just de-emphasize Tar Heel athletics.

I’m amazed these idiots really believe Butch is innocent.

Seems like Deems May feels about like many of us did during the Valvano lynching. Except of course we weren’t facing 9 major NCAA violations, we didn’t have an assistant coach working for a pro agent, obvious cheating by the players, and a program seemingly very much out of control.
I guess considering the sh** storm over the minor stuff during the Valvano years – much of it coming from the one and only Bill F***in Friday, someone should tell Mr. May how lucky the Holes are at this point to even have a football program.

  6. TheAliasTroll 08/01/2011 at 3:09 PM #

This is a fun new development.

  7. packhammer 08/01/2011 at 3:17 PM #

Good Gosh this is nutty. Mr. May, your program is looked down on by the rest of the country not because Butch Davis was fired, but because of what he did and what he allowed and why it took the Administration so long to get rid of him. Read the NOA. And by the way, why do you have to trash Bill Friday in this? He was supporting Butch with his much criticised “lets all move on now” approach several months ago.

My god. This man actually seems to believe that the university is there to cater to the whims and needs football team and that a chancellor that doesn’t do everything it can to support football should “escape to NY on home football weekends” as penance.

Is it any wonder that a former athlete at UNC should feel this way? Is there any bigger sign of the “me, me, me” attitude of the athletes and fans over at “THE FLAGSHIP” than a former athlete (what was his major?) writing this open letter to the fanbase condemning the leadership for upholding the integrity of the university (even if late to the party).

He is right about one thing, they are the laughingstock. Not for firing Butch, but for not firing him sooner.

Holden Thorpe might be working harder than anyone right now to get those phone records from Butch Davis to save his own ass from the backlash he’s getting.

I said from the get go they all dirty and were engaged in a cover up, more and more as the truth is known it appears I am right. Thorpe was Dean of the School over tutoring and the classes rubber stamping athletes papers and grades. So he dirty on the acedemic side. And Davis was dirty on the recruiting and benefits side for players. With Baddour in the middle getting his hands dirty on both sides.

And you can’t help but watch the fun in everyone covering their own asses. Davis pulled a number on Thorpe, played it smart, and got his full pay to leave. The only question now is if Thorpe can keep the media, the NCAA, or others from investigating all the athletes to see how many got special treatment and such, just like what happened at FSU.

Are they interviewing Lurch for the coaching position or the AD’s?

  11. Cardiac95 08/01/2011 at 3:50 PM #

I detect some repeating patterns in that letter… Has anyone run it through one of those plagiarism software programs?…

The best part is he actually believes UNC football would be a catastrophic loss to the national sporting world.

To quote Dan Patrick from several weeks ago when the violations were first announced:

“Don’t you have to be good to cheat?”

  13. imawolf 08/01/2011 at 4:34 PM #

What a JERK. With one statement “Let’s keep the correspondence civil, succinct, and on point. Personal attacks will be dismissed as being part of the “lunatic fringe.”

In the same paragraph he says

“Keep your emails, calls, letters and every known way of correspondence with the Chancellor and BOT imploring them to step down and for God’s sake have no hand in the hiring of the new AD.”

Sounds like he is President of the Lunatic Fringe… The pictures and statements are perfect.

WE are the Flagship! WE are the leader in academics and athletic integrity in North Carolina: WE are, NC State!

  15. HPWolf 08/01/2011 at 4:53 PM #

Carpet bombing is over way too fast and besides it rather impersonal. I prefer the slow burn that is currently taking place over in chapel hell. That way we can all pull up a chair and sit around and enjoy the fire kinda like camping. You know, that warm fuzzy feeling you get when you’re sitting around the camp fire. Yeah…watching carolina burn is kinda like that. Who wants to roast a marshmellow and sing a song?

  16. imawolf 08/01/2011 at 4:54 PM #

OOPs…….Lurch does have a better haircut.

  17. Ismael 08/01/2011 at 5:00 PM #

the next military fly over could be very interesting

I think the NCAA may further de-emphasize football at your university. I like the euphamism. From now on, the NCAA should cease “sanctioning” lawless programs looking for shortcuts to success, and they should simply “de-emphasize” them.

  19. Pack84 08/01/2011 at 5:18 PM #

Does this mental midget think they de-emphasized football over at UNC-CHeat? For God’s sakes he’s an idiot.

  20. otisthetowndrunk 08/01/2011 at 5:32 PM #

“We are the laughing stock of universities across the nation right now due to the decisions that these leaders of our beloved institution exercised.”

Right now? really? Right now? Where have you been for the past year. Did you just arrove to this conclusion now?

  21. MP 08/01/2011 at 5:48 PM #

Hey – In defense of Deems:

I would be pissed too if my alma mater de-emphasized football, education, and integrity over a 12-month period. Let him vent.

  22. Asclepios 08/01/2011 at 5:49 PM #

He de-emphasized his emphasis on de-emphasizing…really? F***king Idiot. No other words in the vocabulary, Lurch?

  23. WV Wolf 08/01/2011 at 5:50 PM #

“Mr. May, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.”

He starts off saying he’ll donate to the Rams Club no matter what because he loves UNC so much but then turns around and says he’ll only buy a suite if Butch is coach. What happened to all that loving UNC unconditionally stuff? I know recruits can sometimes be loyal to a coach and not the school but now the fans do it too?

  24. Lunatic Fringe 08/01/2011 at 6:07 PM #

For the record, I don’t think think you should just drop the “Fringe” part and just call Deems a “Lunatic”.

For what it is worth, I consider the term “Lunatic Fringe” in higher regard than some since it was what our dumbass former AD labeled the vocal group that wanted to be rid of Sendek and our AD who accepted mediocrity in our athletic programs.

  25. IamGumbyDammit 08/01/2011 at 6:11 PM #

I cannot de-emphasize the conclusion to which I arrove that the resemblance between Lurch and Lurch… ummm… I mean Deems…is uncanny, both in appearance and verbalization of intelligent thought (or lack thereof)
