On The Clock: Thorp

Ken Tysiac pens an article today in the N&O, Thorp targeted online by upset UNC fans.

Nine days before the start of football practice, Thorp fired Davis, explaining that allegations of nine major NCAA violations that included academic fraud have eroded the university’s reputation.

Fans who were disappointed with Davis’ dismissal responded by creating fireholdenthorp.com.

They are organizing a campaign to finance billboards in the Triangle advancing their cause. Matt Littlejohn, a Raleigh insurance and risk management consultant and Rams Club member who’s a spokesman for the website, said fans are upset with the timing of the decision as well as the firing.

“I feel like a strong leader would have been able to handle this more appropriately,” Littlejohn said, “and I think Holden Thorp is in over his head.”

“Right now people are emotional, they’re confused,” Montgomery said. “Our fans are angry. So we’re talking with them about that mission. We’re talking with them about supporting this football team, Coach Withers, and the rest of our sports.”

Littlejohn, who represents the fireholdenthorp.com website, said he plans to continue attending games and supporting the team. He hopes the Tar Heels will bond together through adversity and play in the ACC championship game Dec. 3 in Charlotte.

But he said Thorp has mismanaged the situation, and said fans would like Thorp out before the school hires an AD to replace Baddour.

“I would say 100 percent of the Carolina fans that want to see Holden Thorp fired definitely are not comfortable seeing him make the next hire for the athletic director,” Littlejohn said. “… This is an extremely important hire, especially for Carolina football.”

The most shocking part of the article is that Ken was able to find someone who cares about UNC football enough to spend money on a billboard. Now let’s see if there are enough of them out there to actually do it.

“Adversity” I’ve come to hate that word. Adversity is finding kids to play football when a plane crash kills the entire team. What the Heels face is consequences.

You all are making this up, right?

By and large the UNC crowd at large does not care. Unless the basketball program is implicated, they are just not going to pay that much attention. Only a small number of people really bought in to the whole Butch Davis/big time football vision. In fact, contrary to this dust up right now, the UNC faithful will support Thorp and want to get this ugliness cleaned up so that it does not further tarnish the image of thier basketball program/school. Thorp will survive by staying on the offensive: He must actively find problems in both the academic program and the athletic program and make changes to fix them. The Board wants him to lead them out of this, not design a public relations strategy to deny the problems. Go ahead Chancellor Thorp!

I have been thinking for quite sometime that Thorp should just resign and write a book about the whole ordeal. At the very least, he should expose the entire process and demand to find the answers, that would show TRUE leadership. In the past I have expressed that he was in over his head, but that came before I had read Bob Lee and understood that a bit more was going on than I had ever imagined. After reading Bob Lee, I realize that he has been in over his head, but he was forced into that situation. I still believe that he is too young and lacks the leadership. If he were truly a leader, he would have stood up for what he believed in in the first place. While this may have cost him his ‘dream job’, that put him between a rock and a hard place. I still believe that true leadership is developed and delivered in times of adversity.

If that doesn’t spark his interest, he is TRULY going to have to step up to the plate and SHOW some leadership. He should want to prove that BMFD was involved. Unfortunately for him, this would make him look as though he weren’t doing his job. So here we are, once again between a rock and a hard place.

This university has real a conundrum on it’s hands. It’s obvious that there are SERIOUS ACADEMIC ISSUES when athletes are involved. This is occurring under Thorp’s watch, but I believe it has been the way of life in Cheater’s Hill ever since the university introduced the major that most athletes enroll in (some 20+ years ago).

I don’t think the academic issues are isolated to the athletes and this is much more important than anything. However, the leadership thus far is trying to cover-up these issues, rather than expose them. This university is going to have to GROW UP and TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for their actions. Expose all the issues now. The problem is, the LEADERSHIP MUST TAKE THE FIRST STEP.

A few things I wonder about Tarholes:

    1. How in the h$$$ can someone be mad about firing a coach who was over one of the biggest number of multiple violations in NCAA history.
    2. How can you possibly think academic violations are not that important
    3. How can you except a coach who refuses to come clean or share the “216” phone records
    4. Lastly….How in the he$$ do you think this next hire is going to be “the most important hire” and Thorp is lost? I mean who would want to coach football in this situation? The fans want Butch no matter if he burned the only copy of the US constitution and they hate the admin. Hey media…..the NCSU job is not that bad is it?

BMFD supporters are idiots and the fan base needs to wake up. Hire a decent coach that will keep them trouble free for 3-4 years of NCAA storms and then hire someone who is a show stopper.

“Adversity is finding kids to play football when a plane crash kills the entire team. What the Heels face is consequences.” (tobaccordshow)
    Marvelous point!

These clowns may be right in wanting Holden Thorp gone, but their reasoning is woefully off-target. They should want him out for not having dealt w/ Butch and Dickie months ago.

My favorite thread starter so far on IC, a suggestion for Thorpe’s next move:

“Who here has ever made a mistake?

I know I have. The best medicine is to realize your mistake, do whatever you can to correct it and beg for forgiveness.

That is what HT needs to do. He clearly underestimated the reaction is decision would generate and the way in which it would divide the Carolina family. He needs to do what he can to fix it and beg forgiveness. In other words, he needs to march himself over to BD’s house, explain he made a mistake and ask him back.

BD is a big man and I cannot imagine that he would be anything but gracious.”

    hahahahaha

Any new AD is going to prefer to know who his/her Chancellor is going to be, just as any new coach is going to want to know who his/her AD is going to be.

If Holden quits now, does he still show up for the NCAA hearings?

This will not be over by Friday!

They are making some mighty fine dot connections over at PP using Blake’s phone records. Looks like Austin’s phone and a phone issued to the owner of the non-profit “Africa for All Seasons” were issued and activated at exactly the same time, were 1 number apart, and were on the same call plan. Both numbers show numerous times on Blake’s records.

Is “Africa for all Seasons” a front to funnel money to Austin/et.al? Sure appears that way. If this is what it LOOKS like, then the bomb that will go off will make last week look like a snap’n’pop….

A buddy of mine mentioned to me yesterday that a partner in his law firm is on the UNC BoT and their firm’s email servers have blown up with angry emails to his partner.

My buddy, who is originally from Oregon, just shook his head at the nonsense that was being spewed in these emails. If he cared about college sports, he said that this would turn him off from supporting UNC if this was the quality of UNC’s fans.

Funny…when we wanted a new chancelor, AD and better coaches, we were a bunch of wannabe wackos. The lunatic fringe. We had the best we were ever gonna get. We deserved Fowler. I hope this gets a f-ed up as it possibly can for those bastards.

C’mon Heelfan, crank up fireroywilliams.com since he supports Thorp!

@coach13 – exactly. My schadenfreude meter is at 11.

Hungwolf stated, “How about a UNC spokeperson actually saying tickets sales are down because popular games of Va. Tech and NC State are not on the schedule?”

But wait, is this coming from the same school that does not consider us their rival? Hmmm.

  15. tuckerdorm1983 08/03/2011 at 4:58 PM #

I still think Thorp is a decent guy. Because he is so decent/naive he did not have the balls to fire Butch. Should have fired him before the LSU game last year or at least by the end of last season. Where is Donald Trump when you need him?

  16. MattN 08/03/2011 at 5:42 PM #

Tucker, if he had fired Butch before LSU, BOTBob would have fired him 30 seconds later. I think he had the balls, but BOTBob neutered him.

The man was completely screwed no matter which diretion he chose.

That is an awesome entry from IC, MrPlywood … too funny!

And amen to tobaccordshow’s post about ‘adversity’. Can’t wait to hear that word yet again ALL season in regards to the Hole. Give me a break. Somebody (usually from Espn) said it at least once a week last season. “So much adversity!!!”. Gah – kill me now.

“I hope now that the Tar Hole family *mafia* will get behind Chancellor Thorp, pull together and move forward from this difficult day.”

FTFY, Roy. Time to have a Coke.

Time for a little history lesson, or at least I THINK it is. First, Chancellor THORP (no E) works for the President of the Consolidated University. The BOT is an advisory board that actually “runs” the place. Holden is the Plant Manager and supervised the worker bees at every level. The BOT takes care of mundane things like policies, funding, cirriculms, athletics, etc. The Chancellor has a HEAVY dotted (reporting) line to the board, but he can NOT be removed by them. The BOG is supposed to “oversee” the entire Consolidated University, but they do NOT make local decisions. NOW, if you are ready, please open your blue books and number from 1 to 10 as this is a POP QUIZ.

The BOT, under the iron fisted rule of Bob Winston (hotel and restaurant fame….if you want to boycott BOTBob, then do NOT go to Winston’s in North Raleigh. He does NOT run it, but his brother does). BOTBob and two other of his cronies hired Butch. THEN they called Dickie DoDo and told him and the Rams Club about it. THEY were going to bring a “Trophy” to UNC. I guess that their wives, who probably looked a little haggard and shop worn had told them that IF they ever hooked up with a TROPHY BLONDE and decided that they needed a Trophy Wife to impress their buddies at the North Ridge CC or the Dean Dome or good old Kennan, that they would cut off thier testicles and their lawyers would make sure that they could not even pay for a manicure for the home wrecking hussies.

SO, like any red blooded male, they had to LOOK FOR OTHER TROPHIES. Hiring Butch and having HIM on their speed dial and being able to have him “call them out across a crowded room” was all their adolescent hearts desired and THAT was enough to calm their middle aged raging hormones.

SO, with a Troophy Coach, you HAD to have a Trophy stadium. Chuck and Bobby had already trumped them with the new digs at CF. THEY had to outdo Chucky.

The whole sordid affair (not in the bedroom, their wives ride herd on them) started to become public. Good Old Tweetin’ Marvin just kept the info flowing. Then add in a matter of parking tickets, illict relationships (you could see it in their EYE) between a tutor and tutoree, COPYING a DUMB RESEARCH Paper, a “BARK, but NO BITE” Honor Code board, Greg Little’s agent coming out and saying he has $300,000 invested in him, etc. FINALLY pushed Holden. He uttered those famous Popeye the Sailor Man words, “I’ve stood as much as a Chancellor can stand, and I can NOT stands no more”. Please note, in case you got lost here….that Holden was NOT of the Sgt. Schultz COVER-UP, but he did not have enough of the trump cards to get rid of Coach Davis EARLIER.

BUT, when the stench got so bad that the BOG (and their spouses) were being called out in public and private and when Johnny (I used to be the AD) Swofford finally fired his mightly BB salvo, the timing was RIGHT.

NOW, as in Jeannie C. Riley’s song (Harper Valley PTA), the Board was meeting that VERY DAY…..under NEW leadership. And (unconfirmed) Barbara (my Hubby owns AutoZone and the Memphis Grizzlies) was OUT OF THE COUNTRY. You will recall that SHE was the trustee that wanted to know if all this “unpleastantness” was negtively impacting recruiting. Since there was a NEW high sheriff in Town, he quickly deputized the entire gang and a Kangaroo Court was held.

In the end, Old Butch was NOT hanged, but was paid a handsome prize for NOT telling the world WHAT he actually KNEW, WHEN he actually KNEW it, and WHO ELSE actually KNEW IT.

SO, there my frineds, you have the Cliff’s notes on this.

Have fun, my Wuffie Brethern. Do NOT be too critical of Chancellor Thorp. He has MORE spine and larger (not that I would know) Testicales than St. Monteith and we ALL know what his “Days of Glory” brought to NCSU.

  19. tuckerdorm1983 08/03/2011 at 8:28 PM #

MattN Thorp seems very soft spoken. You are right that he was screwed either way.

This is great! You really can’t make this stuff up! I can’t wait until the connection with “Africa for all Seasons” is found to be a funnel for paying atheletics, including BB players as well. Ole Roy is sweating! Help me Rhonda! I think I’m gonna have another big Orange!
