Two N&O Editorials on UNC [Asks UNC System President Tom Ross to Act]

The Raleigh News & Observer said in a pair of editorials that

[t]he worst academic/athletic scandal in 50 years continues to linger at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the clouds are darkening as more information is revealed. The revered university is paying a dear price indeed for bending to sports boosters’ burning desire for a big-time football program.

They paired that with

From its earliest decades, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has turned to honor-bound students to help enforce standards of acceptable conduct. The rationale has been that in an academic community where students are sworn to act with integrity, the duty of upholding standards can and should be shared. That approach has produced the system of honor courts, run by students, where allegations of misbehavior are considered and, if warranted, penalties imposed

It’s pretty safe to say that the big sharks are circling now that there’s a lot of light blue blood staining the waters around Chapel Hill.

There’s plenty of unanswered questions about this whole thing, but I really would love to know about the multiple license plates per luxury vehicle. That’s criminal.

My only issue with the first editorial was the line “The revered university is paying a dear price…” “Revered” my ass…

Gumby, remember that sense of entitlement and “we are special” I mentioned yesterday. That’s a tiny example of the Poison, errr, Public Ivy mentality.

Glad to see the NandO cracking the (long overdue) whip. Such an editorial would not have seen the light of day in the Daniels Family/Mickey McCarthy era- they would have figured out how to blame State in some way for this misfortune.

It seems that the tide of public opinion is beginning to turn with many UNC supporters on this idea that UNC can become a major top program in football. The most fascinating part of this whole thing is that the UNC Admin being slow to react will probably cause more damage to this dream of being a football powerhouse than anything the NCAA will levy on the school.

Let’s be honest, there is a group of UNC supporters who care primarily about basketball, but were convinced by this UNC Admin they could be a powerhouse in football and invest a lot of money into the program.

    It really is fascinating…

Please, tell my why the papers never want to question WHY UNC will allow a kid that blatently cheated and took legal action against the University, WHY is he allowed to retain a scholarship and also be offered a student coaching position on thier football team……… HELP THE PUBLIC understand this…… WHY?? We all know why…..don’t we……..

Troll, with all the questions that exist and continue to arise, does this sound like the kind of compliance & assistance that the ncaa is looking for and the holes claim to be offering?

…and yes, wolf, we do know.

  8. old13 07/19/2011 at 9:03 AM #

One has to wonder when (likely not “if”!) the national university accreditation folks will become interested in how the academics side of things actually work over there!

  9. Alpha Wolf 07/19/2011 at 9:06 AM #

13, it ought to be re-named UNC-A, with all due respect to Asheville.

After all, ya pays your tuition for a class, and when you pass go, you get $200 from Roy and an A!

  10. TAEdisonHokie 07/19/2011 at 9:17 AM #

“The revered university is paying a dear price…”??

Not even close! The NCAA torpedoes are in the water and the USS Chapel Hill can’t be turned fast enough to avoid the coming disaster. They will soon discover, like the Titanic, that there are not enough life boats to save everyone.

Meanwhile, Captain Thorp and the UNC deck crew continue to go about their appointed duties attending to the wealthiest of the Tar Heel patrons in First Class.

TAE, please don’t tarnish the Navy with your nautical references. Make that MV Chapel Hill.

Who else is having as much fun with this as me?

  13. Nigel Tufnel 07/19/2011 at 10:05 AM #

WolfBlood, I am having as much fun with this as you are. And dare I say, this one goes to 11!

I look very forward to seeing a 45 for 45 or 60 for 60 (whenever ESPN does this again) on this whole mess. The stuff comming out is stranger than fiction. My bet, much like SMU, someone at some point is going to get mad or not be able to sleep and feel they need to talk, it may not be immediate but it will happen. I hope it is Marvin and I hope it is soon, but I am certain someone has given him a good reason to be quiet by now…….

  15. TruthBKnown Returns 07/19/2011 at 10:31 AM #

WolfBlood, I’m having fun with this. It’s been a lot of fun. But there is that fear in the back of my mind that, despite knowing what SHOULD happen, they will get off with a relative slap on the wrist.

It’s like watching a game where one team leads the whole way, and you know they SHOULD win, but they just don’t quite finish it and lose it at the very end. (E.g., the U.S. Women’s Soccer team on Sunday…)

I just know there are a couple of key players (like Blake, the tutor, or Butch’s 216 phone records) that could probably blow the lid off this thing to the point where even Carolina people would say, “Yep, it’s over!” If only just one of them would talk. We seem to be getting close to that point.

“Here are the questions to which Ross and the public he represents are entitled to have answers:”

You can add this one to the list. Why are Thorpe, Baddour and Davis still there?

It’s good to see the N&O at least cover the story. I live in New Bern, and the only way I get any news about this investigation and associated UNC dog and pony show is HERE! I have emailed our local paper (New Bern Sun Journal) and our local TV stations sports guy,(Brian North @ WCTI channel 12) asking why they had no coverage. Only got an email back from Brian North saying that no one around here knows McAdoo and that Stae Fan Nation should be careful about how many rocks we throw, or it could backfire on us llike it did with Jim Valvano. (he showed his true colors then) So anyway, keep up the good work guys! This is my only source.

The storm is coming regardless. However, it still amazes me how any UNC Alumni could put up with the lack of concern by the BMFD, Dicky, Holden and crew. Any other university would have cleaned house a long time ago and spent time making sure it never happened again rather than the fiasco we see now.

At first I wasn’t dead set on being an a$$ about the problems (even though my “V” feelings wanted it) but this is just the most arrogant stance to take on a problem that is a FACT. I have UNC friends who still say this is not a big deal and they don’t care…..really? You should care at a minimum about the academic issues. Heck, even the local news said that State fans just want blood. I couldn’t believe a sports reporter could be so far off from the truth.

The truth is this (for me anyway), if this happens in Raleigh with TOB or any coach/team we WOULD take immediate action. Prolly clean house and make a statement. Why UNC is choosing to drag themselves through the mud is beyond me. Unless BMFD has something on the Tarholes that is beyond the wrath of the current scandal.

I expect that the search and destroy effort is already underway. The Unc crowd will be looking closely at State’s academic program as it relates to athletes, how the student judicial system functions, parking tickets, and everything else they can think of to change the subject.

But I know this. I have absolute confidence in Tom O’Brien. He might get tripped up on some technical rule but there is no way in the world he would do or allow anything unethical to be done on his watch.

  20. wolfpacker 07/19/2011 at 11:39 AM #

unc should be working on putting together a few new curriculum:

    student aflete
    football playa
    basketball playa

This current curriculum isn’t working out so well.

  21. AirWolf 07/19/2011 at 11:47 AM #

I’m afraid some dottering, old Bill Friday-type idiot on the UNC system BOG will conclude that all of the schools in the system should be investigated to ensure that the unc-cheat problem isn’t wide spread. As packhammer said, I am confident of State’s programs, but I expect the BOG to attempt to deflect any problems at the “revered” flagship on to everyone else in the system.

  22. packhammer 07/19/2011 at 11:49 AM #

EAS, I have two thoughts on your question as to why the Unc folks are allowing this to go on:

    1. They decided to ride it out with Butch when they fired Blake. Bad decision but so far they have not seen fit to change that decision and now it is way late and Fall camp is about to start. So there is a powerful incentive to stay the course with the plan.

    2. Perhaps they now really want to fire Butch Davis, and get this cleaned up, but they want to save some money and thus fire him for cause. But they have yet to even internally nail him with something hard and fast to allow a firing for cause, without litigation and/or a big payoff. A big payout for Butch Davis right now would cause explosions everywhere.

Baddour’s stated primary objective is to protect the Unc brand. It is not working and now the N&O is showing no signs of letting up. They are probably in re-think mode right now in Chapel Hill. Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of people.

  23. eas 07/19/2011 at 12:01 PM #

That is a good point packhammer. I also agree it couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of people.

As soon as it registers over at the flagship that the “denial” approach and the “pretend to cooperate” approach have failed, I also fear that the “deflection” approach will be the next direction. It doesn’t sound so bad when you say “Let’s investigate the whole system”, just bear in mind that in this case, “the whole system” really means NCSU and ECU. You can bet anything you want that the wheels are already in motion, the investigations are already underway. It’s not front-and-center because the 3 stooges still think their tactics are working…

Fun? Has anyone thought about this? In the past year or so, we’ve been blessed with two of the most ‘fun” things that State alums could ever wish for:

    1. Seeing Lee Fowler finally get run out of Raleigh

    and

    2. The destruction and exposure of the Carolina Way

As a famous Wolfpack alum(me) once said: “it don’t get any funner than this”!!
