N&O: Puts McAdoo/Honor Court Failure On The Front Page

Thorp said he wished someone in the university had caught the plagiarism in McAdoo’s paper before the Wolfpack fans did, but he also said the handling of McAdoo’s academic misconduct does not suggest the need for an overhaul of the honor court.

Like I said on a related thread, the video shows a very angry Ncaa attorney. This matter kills Unc’s full cooperation strategy. That strategy they were hoping, and planning, would mitigate a severe penalty. They are going to have to move fast or risk getting really slammed by the Ncaa. But I expect that some of their high priced hired talent is already telling them that. By the way did anyone see the story about Baddour’ s primary objective being to protect the brand? That isn’t going so well right now! I bet there are some real unhappy people sitting through meetings and phone calls today over in CH.

The unx athletic scandal, the gift that makes every week Christmas week for an ABCer!
You know, 13 months ago if you had told me there was cheating, academic fraud, agent involvement, illegal benefits in unx athletics and that the university, its honor court, its administration would cover it up to the death I would have said “of course”. However I would have never guessed that every step of the way that the school/athletes/fans would make absolutely the WRONG moves.
I’d just like to say how much I am enjoying seeing the conceit and arrogance blow-up in the face of practically every unx alumni, fan, and faculty member.

I do have one concern – the effort to paint this as an “honor court” problem. I don’t think it’s an honor court problem, but as others have said, the problem is the “adults” – ie – the leadership at Chapel Hill.

Here’s what I said yesterday and it still applies:

The issue isn’t the honor court, rather it’s the executive leadership of the school.

The AD and general counsel essentially got up in front of the NCAA and advocated for a student saying he did he’s own work without validating it first.

This is HUGE when you are supposed to be “self-investigating”. It shows you didn’t investigate anything – and you failed in your fiduciary duty. Simply put – you have proven that you cannot be trusted. And it’s one thing if you’re the video coordinator or a player pulling this crap – its’ quite another when you are the AD and General Counsel.

When the leadership at UNC-Ch took the reigns to investigate the charges of cheating – it wasn’t supposed to do what was best for the player, the football program or even UNC-Ch – it was supposed to diligently attempt to find the truth. Obviously, they failed tremendously – and should be called to the carpet accordingly. If this was a publically held company – and Baddour and the General Counsel had testified the same to improper accounting principals – they’d rightfully going to jail.

The good news for them is that I don’t think this bothers the NCAA at all.

I got a far different impression watching the NCAA attorney call McAdoo a “cheater” repeatedly and threatening to go into the recently-discovered advanced plagiarism if it went to trial.

By the way, did we ever get an explanation as to why the UNC players were using multiple license plates for their luxury cars? Seems like that kind of criminal behavior absolutely demands an answer.

    Sign out sheets!!!!

Ok, so let’s take this a step further. Read this article at the dth and read the first comment at the bottom of the page. The poster has presented the grade distribution for the classes that McAdoo received help from the tutor…EYE OPENING! The grades are inflated and apparently no grade was issued less than a ‘C-‘ in any of the classes.

If you have ever doubted the academic integrity of unc, this little piece of information may shed some light for you.

Did anyone see the video of the Sporting News reporter? He stated that “the death penalty has to be in the discussion.” States that Butchie is the CEO of the football program and should take responsibility and resign.

    SMU anyone????

  8. choppack1 07/17/2011 at 5:33 PM #

OM – that may be true – but that’s one lawyer – fighting for the NCAA.

The NOA was pretty week and didn’t include LOIC and included very few details that we didn’t already know. Remember, the NCAA could have googled McAdoo’s papers as well.

I’m enjoying this – but I suspect UNC has the last laugh when sanctions are handed out.

  9. IamGumbyDammit 07/17/2011 at 5:54 PM #

I don’t place much signifigance on the “anger” of the NCAA attorney at the McAD’oh! hearing – it was not a staff attorney for the NCAA, it was a local Raleigh lawyer hired by the NCAA.

  10. BJD95 07/17/2011 at 5:56 PM #

There’s no way they attorney used that kind of language without direction from the NCAA folks. I take it as a very, very ominous sign for the Holes.

  11. Virginia Wolf 07/17/2011 at 6:16 PM #

Question: Since the NCAA has given UNX the 9 major infractions are they going to consider anything else that may occur or are they finished with their charges? Would make a world of difference, if they can’t or won’t consider additional violations.

  12. Hungwolf 07/17/2011 at 6:22 PM #

Thorpe’s youth and inexperience are glaring weaknesses for UNX right now. He doesn’t know what to say or how to say it. He is totally lost in a PR nightmare right now. A Non-UNC graduate BOG would be replacing him right now and hiring someone to clean house and clean up the mess.

  13. Virginia Wolf 07/17/2011 at 6:47 PM #

Let the cleaning commmence!!! The house is in disarray and delay will only make things worse. I still call for an independent investigation. Why is the state legislature not embarassed enough to demand an investigation. Still trying to protect the image. That’s “the carowhina way”!

I have a slight beef with the N & O in that they did not work in an “arrove” reference. Otherwise they covered it very well. Late, but well.

  15. TheCOWDOG 07/17/2011 at 7:15 PM #

Chops, you haven’t wavered once. I like that in a guy. However, I’m more inclined to roll with BJD on this.

With Blake being new grounds, I’m not sure the LOIC tag is necessary to hang USC-like, or worse, punishments on my favorite boys over there.

  16. choppack1 07/17/2011 at 8:17 PM #

Cowdog – Actually – when this all was breaking in September, October and November – and USC’s 2-3 year ban was the only recent punishment out there – I thought UNC was in big trouble. However, since then, that ruling has proven to be more of a fluke than a “new normal”.

I had the UConn basketball ruling as one to watch for how UNC would be treated. I believed that they handled their case in a similar fashion w/ a major exception – they actually punished themselves a little.

I HOPE you and BJD are right on this one. This program has 3 sets of major infractions vs. them, 2 of them worked directly, in close contact w/ Butch Davis. The McAdoo revelation should cement either LOIC or an intentional coverup in Chapel Hill, thus clinching at least a 2 year post season ban. However, I have an unfailing belief in the ineptitude and moral corruption of the NCAA – and until I see more than a 1 prominent college punished in a row, I’ll continue to expect the proverbial wrist-slap from said organization.

  17. VaWolf82 07/17/2011 at 8:24 PM #

Sporting News reporter? He stated that “the death penalty has to be in the discussion.”

    Then he is an idiot.

  18. TheCOWDOG 07/17/2011 at 8:45 PM #

Yes Va, he is. So much so, that I totally put that guy on ignore.

I’m not convinced that the litany of probables that you outlined months ago, based on past punitives, is out of the question, but I’m more inclined to the bowl bans and lengthy schol losses.

I’m still ” curiouser ” than hell to know if the NCAA knew of the 216 or not.

  19. T-Pack 07/17/2011 at 9:07 PM #

As much as I enjoy seeing Holes getting their noses rubbed in steaming piles of their own arrogant making, IMHO, Wolfpack involvement in the Tarhole problem would best focus on the differences between this and our own controversy 20 years ago, rather than jumping on every opportuntiy to paint them as 100% sinners and all others (us included) as 100% saints …. Those differences being (1) how the UNC administration, faculty, athletic dept., and other authorities higher up have handled the issues here in comparison; and (2) how the media has reacted … or not.

We don’t have to be rabid and irrationally obsessed rivals to point out we were screwed to the wall, and that the “flagship” should get at least the same public treatment . . . and in light of the magnitude of the violations deserves far worse!

  20. BureauOfMines 07/17/2011 at 9:19 PM #

It must have unfolded like a slow motion train wreck for Thorp and crew. As soon as McAdoo set the fateful chain of events in motion, Thorp and Baddour must have realized then how it would play out. Honor Court Laundering, wow. This demonstrates that UNC is totally corrupt.

So Thorp blames it on the vigilance of a rival school. If not for the chain of events set in motion by McAdoo, none of this would have ever come to light. It would have remained buried with Thorp holding the shovel. If the BOG and BOT doesn’t give Thorp the bum’s rush over this alone, they are as crooked as he is and they should be removed.

Spill the beans Austin! … if ya got any. Go for it. Let’s see what else is being hidden and hushed up over there.

  21. wolfpacker 07/17/2011 at 9:58 PM #

Someone posted this on the N&O’s website…Grade distribution, out of the top 600 classes, 88 (14.7 %) of those classes have 100% of the students getting an A for a grade.

This link will open the other EYE:

Every NC State student athlete should be on full alert…you can bet that UNx will come with guns ablazin’.

  23. McCallum 07/17/2011 at 10:29 PM #

This is a long time coming. While unc has certainly helped players, Charlie Scott having help to read Mother Goose in a final exam comes to mind, the 1986-1992 time frame really comes into view. El Deano needed help getting better players into unc, the shot clock had wrecked his reliance on the 4 corners and thus his reliance on smart players was out the door. unc needed both a subject matter and a series of programs with a subjective evaluative basis to keep the players eligible and somewhat out of sight of the unc faculty unfriendly to the various sports programs.

The African American studies program lined up nicely with what unc needed to get these players into a safe program and keep them eligible. unc simply stuck gold for two reasons:

    1) the new study program made them look fashionable

    2) the subject matter is largely subjective and based in victimology

I have little doubt that a player like Steve Hale would ever be given a full ride to play basketball at unc now. They want their cake and to eat it as well and that simply can not happen in big time sports. It has caught up to them and they are getting torched.

To wrap, I’ll say this: Chris Washburn and Shackleford can finally rest easy and go safely into the night. The system worked in Raleigh, they both flunked out despite being wrongly admitted in the first place. No such assurances are open in chapel hill. That degree from State you have on the wall has no questions following it around, that unc degree you see must beg a few questions now days…………right?

The “carolina way” is dead. We at carolinasucks are rejoicing and here is Gomer Pyle singing our theme song:

    McCallum

PS: I’m just so ashamed to admit that I’m from North Carolina after all this cheating. It has brought great shame to our state and besmirches our ancestors and those North Carolinians to come.

I’ve also been working on my Ringo Starr cover band.

  24. packhammer 07/17/2011 at 11:03 PM #

Wow. Old Mr. Jim Nebors really could sing. I found that to be most inspirational. By the way, who turned McAdoo in for improper help in the first place?

  25. packhammer 07/18/2011 at 12:13 AM #

Baddour: “We are arguing that this was Michael McAdoo work, even the citations were his work.”

McAdoo: “I wrote the entire paper and I found all my sources and identified them.”

These statements are from the Ncaa appeal meeting. But why no statement of any sort from Jennifer Wiley? Nowhere, nada. How can you hear this matter and not get information from her? Wouldn’t you want to hear directly from her what kind of help she was providing McAdoo and other athletes? If she ever does speak it will be very interesting.
