Lorenzo’s Legacy Honored by TSN

I thought this was a nice touch by The Sporting News.

College basketball history did not begin with the 1984-85 season, but college basketball as we know it did. That’s when the NCAA played its first 64-team tournament, the event that has come to define the game for many. Over the course of the summer, Sporting News will examine some of the bests and worsts of that era.

The sport lost the author of one of the game’s most stunning moments recently, when former N.C. State star Lorenzo Charles was killed in a bus accident. Charles, as everyone remembers, caught an air ball and dunked it as time expired in the 1983 national championship game to give the Wolfpack a shocking upset of heavyweight Houston.

In honor of Charles, let’s take a look at the biggest shots—from close range, just like his bucket—since the NCAA Tournament expanded to 64 teams:

NC State may have won the two most significant NCs in basketball’s history.

In 1974, we were the team to interrupt UCLA’s dominance of the tournament.

In 1983, we had the most memorable, exciting run in tournament history capped off with the closest finish possible.

Winning the NC now is an important accomplishment in-part because of NC State’s, and specifically Lorenzo Charles’, impact on the tournament.

It’s only appropriate that the universal celebration for winning the NC is to imitate NC State coach Everette Case by cutting down the nets…

There has NOT been a lot of publicity about the Memorial Fund for Lorenzo’s Family. I think that the WPC is going to try to get some info out, in a tactful way. However, the N&O did get the info out and GoPack.com briefly mentioned it. I have contacted Wachovia (Wells Fargo) and this is what I learned. I have also sent a donation and urge others to support the family FIRST, then if so inclined, the Endowment that the WPC has started. To make a donation to the fund, here is the address. You can also drop by the Forest Hills (Raleigh) Branch and do this in person. We are on vacation and used the Mail In method.

Make checks payable to The Lorenzo Charles Memorial Fund

Mail the check to the following address.

    Well Fargo Bank
    Attn: Bank By Mail
    P. O. Box 3488
    Portland, Oregon 97208-3488

The Forest Hills representative said that the donations MAY be, and he thought so, Tax Dedcutible. I can not vouch for that. NCSU AD Dept is supposed to be involved and can provide info on the amount received.

Please pass this along to as many WP fans as you can. The 1983 team was very special to me and making any SIZE donation to Lorenzo’s family in their time of need is appreciated.

GO PACK….RIP Lorenzo. Tell Jimmy V. hello from the rest of us…
