Butch says he will provide self-redacted 216 records “pretty soon”

As you can see in this story from the N & O, Butch plans to turn over his 216 phone records.  But there is a big catch.  Butch will be redacting them himself before he does so.

Davis said his personal cell phone records were reviewed “completely and entirely” last fall by UNC’s counsel, and he plans to release them “pretty soon.” He said he plans to redact personal calls from the records.

“It’s a personal cell phone that I’ve had for over 10 years,” Davis said. “And so we’ll redact and I will go through it and things like my wife, my son, my dad, my sister, close personal friends and family members, those types of things. Anything that has anything to do with UNC and business, those will be completely open for public record.”

I wonder if the same UNC counsel reviewed Butch’s phone records and the McAdoo paper.  You know, the wildly-plagiarized paper hilariously defended as McAdoo’s own work (except for some minor improper help with cite forms) by everyone associated with UNC.  How much credibility can anyone give UNC’s ability to investigate anything after that?  But I digress.

(LRM mid-post hi-jack: Nevermind the fact that technically, Butch Davis and John Blake are “close personal friends,” if Butch Davis has been using his personal cell phone for business during his entire tenure at UNC, then why does he get to determine which records should be redacted? Because last fall UNC reviewed them? We can all rest easy knowing that. Shouldn’t some kind of independent review board determine this? The entire UNC administration has gone out of its way since the onset of this investigation to avoid scrutiny from the lowly among us, and now their ringleader, in a magnanimous gesture no doubt, is going to show us little people the records as he deems necessary, since, after all, they were previously reviewed by folks whose integrity we dare not question. This is one of the finest examples yet of the flippant, arrogant elitism over at the Flagship. End hi-jack.)

After Butch gets done with them, many people expect the records to look like this:

Butch also explained yet more things he doesn’t know about:

“There’s a limited amount that any of us know,” Davis said. “I think, certainly, as has been talked about many, many times is that Dick Baddour as the athletic director, he’s been the point guy. And he along with our compliance department and Chancellor Thorp, they’re the ones that are in the know on absolutely everything. There’s a lot of things that I don’t need to know, don’t know. And they’ve handled everything.”

There’s a lot of things Butch doesn’t need to know?  You don’t say!

(WV Wolf end-post hijack): Inside Carolina has Butch’s Pigskin Classic Q&A that includes this gem:

Do you have any reaction to Marvin Austin’s latest tweeting habits?
“No. I don’t tweet. I don’t have a Twitter account and I don’t follow it, but I know that Marvin is very disappointed in the Michael McAdoo result. They were very close personal friends. Marvin, being the type of person that he is, he was very hurt that Michael lost that bid to regain his actual eligibility to continue to play collegiately. That has an affect on it, but one thing I do know is that Marvin knows that I am completely ethical and that I always do the right thing.”

Completely ethical? Always do the right thing? Really?

While you’re at it, where are the emails?

  3. GaroEd 07/21/2011 at 5:35 PM #

I’m sure if he submitted them to the “UNC counsel” they were reviewed and found to be OK!

I don’t for a second believe the NCAA accepted redacted phone records if they were received at all.

    hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

You call what he is getting an education…in what? CUT-and-PASTE?

As for the administration at unc, let’s get the guy to a level where he realizes that ‘arrove’ is not a word. Let’s get him to where he can at least sound like he can graduate from high school.

Do they think we are as STUPID as they are?

    hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

We’ve had the denial. Here’s the deflection. “Hey Dickie Boy, catch – see ya, wouldn’t wanta be ya”

Hey Butch, I wouldn’t count on the UNC attys, they the same ones that reviewed the McAdoo case and paper. You want a real review, send it to Pack Pride!

“And the one thing we wanted to do as an institution is allow Michael to stay on scholarship and finish his education if that’s his choice.”

    Translation:
“The one thing we want is to continue kissing our players ass so they don’t squeal or get upset and disparage UNC which in turn would hurt recruiting…”

Still stcking with the “we have been fully cooperating with the NCAA” line eh? Well better hope that is true. The NCAA doesn’t like it when coaches go out and blab about such and the University lawyers are fighting them all the way. Oh but then maybe the cooperation started today so it isn’t a lie. Mr. Davis I have watched you speak today and you don’t make a very credible witness.

By the way, would getting Ms. Wiley a job out of town and funding a hot shot lawyer to help keep her quiet fall under the category of full cooperation? How about paying off Mr. Blake $75K on his way out of the state when he should have been fired on the spot?

“This is a very, very young, inexperienced football team,” Davis said.”

Where have I heard that before???

^The college football version of ‘Cocoon’:They keep getting younger every year…the natural result of cheating your a$$es off and getting upperclassmen suspended!

When are they going to realize they are using black highlighters to note illegal and unlawful information????????? I never cease to be amazed by our government agencies!

What a sad and pathetic joke (or, more likely, evasion!)

  16. packhammer 07/21/2011 at 9:15 PM #

What is really funny is that Chansky nailed it and those idiots can’t see the truth. All season long some ugly aspect of this will be discussed during every TV game and at every stage of the proceedings. And Butch will be asked to comment and he will get all red faced and huffy and say he can’t say anything, and then next week it will start all over.

The Heels have been young now for Butch’s entire stint in CH. In light of the news erupting out of there since 2009, this story becomes much more interesting… One that I think DG scoffed at and referred to as War and Peace.

Ga, can you answer a question for me? DG proudly advertises himself as a North Carolina attorney although his license has been inactive since 2009.

Can he call himself an attorney or “hold himself out” as an attorney without an active license in North Carolina.

As a CPA, I cannot do that without an active license in North Carolina. In fact, I have to surrender my certificate if I go “inactive” and would have to be reinstated to get a license.

I’d really never paid much attention to him(cause I live in the Charlotte area and have only started listening to WRAL on my computer recently)…

Anyone who has to say in an interview that he is completely ethical and always does the right thing appears to be trying to convince himself.

  20. GAWolf 07/22/2011 at 6:13 AM #

Very true. it’s like someone saying “you know me,” “the money isn’t a problem,” “have a blessed day,” or calling a restraunt “fine dining” or “gourmet” in its name. Those words only mean one thing and its hardly what the speaker wanted you to think they mean.

Not to mention, isn’t this Butch poking The bear? Marvin clearly wasn’t saying that in his tweet… I wait anxiously for his response.

  21. GAWolf 07/22/2011 at 6:15 AM #

And this is exactly what I was hoping for out of Pinehurst. BD is so arrogant you had to know he wouldn’t approach the issue with humility.

Sounds like Mark Armstrong has finally gotten some company… Luke Decock is now sounding fed up with Chief Know Nothing’s s*itting bull !!!

Just so I understand this correctly, Butch Davis is claiming that as the head football coach he doesn’t need to understand or know everything that is going on with the football program, but his bosses do. I thought that’s what the the head football coach was supposed to do so his bosses don’t have to run football program.

  24. LRM 07/22/2011 at 9:44 AM #

^That’s nothing more than strategic, pre-emptive posturing by Butch, so he’s in a position to take his bosses down with him if they choose to throw him under the bus.

When anyone starts to say I ‘always’ do the right thing, or I am ‘completely’ ethical, you know something is up. No one always does the right thing unless it is ‘right’ in their eyes. If you were innocent you can admit that sometimes you don’t do the right thing or make the right decision. You can admit your mistakes. Someone who can’t admit their mistakes probably lack the ability to determine what their mistakes were.
