2011 Football Updated Organizational Chart

Last week we discussed the inconsistent perceptions that many people hold regarding the future of the NC State 2011 football season. (click here)

Today, Coach O’Brien has released an updated ‘organizational chart’. (Before you take a look at today’s org chart, you can click here to our discussion of the Org Chart in the spring.) You can check it out by clicking here.

NOTABLE CHANGES
* R.J. Mattes is listed as the starter at left tackle, and he backed up by freshman Tyson Chandler.
* Mikel Overgaard is listed as the starter at right tackle, and he is backed up by sophomore Rob Crisp.
* James Washington is the starter at tailback, and he is backed up by senior Curtis Underwood. Returning starter Mustafa Greene suffered a foot injury in spring practice.
* McKay Frandsen and Markus Kuhn listed as starters at defensive end and defensive tackle respectively.
* Jarvis Byrd the starter at boundary corner and David Amerson at field corner. C.J. Wilson is now backing up Amerson.
* Niklas Sade (K), Wil Baumann (P), and Scott Thompson (LS) are all special teams starters as true freshmen.

LOTS of juniors and seniors sitting at the top of this chart. On one hand, I feel really good about that dynamic as we head into the fifth year of Coach O’Brien’s leadership of the program. That is exactly what you would hope to see in a program that has been building. On the other hand, I’m not 100% convinced that the level of talent of the back-ups is currently at a level where we don’t run the risk of a big drop-off in the coming years. This leads me to wonder aloud, “Is the 2011 season a potential near term ‘peak’ for the football program?’

So long as we can run it up inside the Tackles, we should be fine.

The D will be SICK! Mustafa will get healthy. Believe TOB, Glennon will be solid; he’ll make the receivers better, plus he has Geroge Bryan. T.J. will step it up. And the kicking — well it can’t get worse than last year (fingers crossed). There is a lot to look forward to. Did I mention how SICK the D will be?

The D will be “SICK” if the D-Line can stop the run and pressure the QB. I think they are the weak link on D. Though thats not saying they wont be good. Our Secondary and LB’s will be some of the best in the league. I also feel like D-Line is going to be our one major weakness in the coming years. But at the moment I’m just looking forward to a great season. Hopefully, the schedule gives Glennon a chance to get the feel for being a starter before he has a game vs a good D. Though I’m still worried about that Wake game. The last time we beat them away was 2001. Also, dont write the Cincy game off as a definite win.

I really like our future prospects at DT. Teal has been compared to BJ Raji, Gray looks like a player, and I think McGill will develop nicely. If we land Hooker and I think we will, then it’s even better. But we really could stand some help at DE. I like our players there but they don’t seem to be great pass rushers. They seem solid against the run but they need to get to the QB more. Thinking back to TOB’s time at BC, i really don’t remember them having great pass rushing DEs other than Kiwinuka. They did have one pass rush specialist one yr(Alex Albright had 8.5 sacks one yr) but other than that no one else comes to mind. I also agree that this current recruiting class is very important to our future. WE need a good class. TOB and company do seem to bring a good class every other year and in the off yr, it seems to be a complementary class(improves depth, get a few future starters, etc.). There does seem to be some good recruiting news lately though. It appears to only be a matter of time before we land Hooker and if that happens, it helps us out with Todd Gurley. 4 star WR Quinshad Davis from SC is planning to visit us. Appeared to be a lock to Clemson or South Carolina but they have filled all their WR spots.

Last year’s defense was good, but not great. I expect more of the same this year.

2 years ago we were starting several freshmen at OL and DB. Those players are going to be reaching their productive prime as college players this year and next . We should be able to run the ball much better as well as defend the pass. Good DBs make great DLs.

I am looking forward to seeing Glennon play and I hope our receivers can improve on their predecessors’ affinity for dropping balls.

I see good potential for this team if we can keep them playing all year.

‘The Waterbug’ never got an inch of separation during the Spring Game. I’m wracking that up to improved LB play from DJ Green… at least that’s what I’m hoping was the case.

I’m VERY interested in the style of play and what/how much difference we’ll see in the play-calling. I’m expecting a ‘shift’ to a “3 plays & punt,” grind it out, field position-type play, where the punter’s leg & FG kickers get the difference for us in the end.

PP also has ‘hints’ from JWashington’s family that he is healthy again, with regained blazing speed, after playing all of last year with a hamstring injury.

An interesting twist… TOB is speaking about the team with unbounded confidence–something we haven’t heard from him with previous teams.

It is MUST SEE football ahead…

    Good DBs make great DLs.

This is exactly backwards. You don’t need to look any further than the improved DL in 2004 vs 2003 to illustrate this.

Good DLs make even better LBs.

Ah, call me hard-to-please, but I would not be satisfied to see a ‘3 plays & punt’ offense. I can watch the Panthers do that on Sundays. And the last thing I want to do is leave a game in the hands of our and FG unit and punter. I highly doubt that is TOB’s strategy. But, then again I am not a Div I football coach.

We have some good players and much improved depth over the past few years. But the truth is that we are not going to know what we have until at least mid-season. I do think that we are better to the extent that we will win the games we are supposed to win. That is a credit to the program Tom O’Brien has built. But how Glennon will handle game pressure and adversity is an unknown. And will we have a defense that can stop people without Nate Irving? We have not been able to do that in the past. There are more questions including the kickers and recievers, and unknowns with injuries. As usual, I am about to go crazy waiting for practice to start and the season. But this would be a good year to have some perspective going into the season. I think we have a solid team. I just don’t know if it is a winning team.
