Perhaps I take the term ‘lack of institutional control’ to literally. Perhaps it has some hidden meaning. But defined plainly, this is LOIC.

Be on the lookout for scholarship strips, wins vacated, TV ban and LOIC. Again, these are just possibilities looking at the NOA.

So Wiley’s alleged to have paid $1,789 in traffic tix for a football player. That partly explains how that mountain of fines got paid.

Most shocking part of NCAA letter: 9.c — UNC may have known about some benefits but “did not adequately follow up on information provided.”

Not sure what you’re reading, TruthBKnown… allegation #9 basically screams LOIC. Read it when you get a chance…

Heard they’re “charged” with FTM, not LOIC. I admit I’m ignorant about how all this stuff works, but I heard that FTM or LOIC would be in the NOA, not sometime later. And that they got FTM, not LOIC (in the NOA).

This is about as bad as we could expect. They might not get LOIC, but they will lose scholarships, wins vacated and post season ban. Possible butch is suspend a few games. I can’t believe they redacted the whole thing and released the cliff notes version. Various news agencies are still going after BMFD phone records. They(NCAA) do not have that.

  11. wolffpride 06/21/2011 at 8:44 PM #

    I have a question

Now my understanding is that Butch Davis’ 216 number was part of the court order. I read that it is UNC that is refusing to release it. I am confused because it is personal phone, and therefore it would be his choice to release any record of use.

So what I really want to know is are his 216 phone reocrds going to have to be released sometime? Can he or UNC refuse to release the info and there is nothing we can do about it. Was it in fact court ordered?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

LOI will be a result of the allegations response and a decision made by the committee after UNC’s response.

Interesting connection in that Davis’ personally hired tutor paid for parking tickets for players, if I am reading this right.

report has a whole tone of serious allegations and questions about UNC’s lack of reporting or lack of investigation of them.

Interesting tid bit that I noticed is NCAA wants a list of secondary violations reported to NCAA last 5 years. Been saying it for years, UNC does not report secondary violations. NCAA seems to have noticed it also.

This is much worse than anything I expected. Time the media, BOG, atty general, and anyone that cares about the UNC System to take notice and stick it to these clowns and give them what they deserve.

ERskine and BOG should be hiding in shame. BOG should all be fired. Look at these questions and allegaions and ask yourself how could our own BOG only ask Butch: “How’s recruiting going coach?”

  13. imawolf 06/21/2011 at 8:52 PM #

Butch Davis, no doubt was hired, to get UNC to the top of the football world…… no doubt he was told to do whatever it took and to cover his tracks. However, the caliber of student athlete to which they all sold their souls caused what we are seeing now…… you cannot control blatant disregard to moral ethics…. It will get you every time….every time……it may take a while, but if you choose the wrong road in life, it inevitably leads to this……… don’t know if Davis is all to blame, as no doubt, he was attempting to carry out the hopes and dreams of people within the UNC system that have very poor moral ethics. No loss of sleep for me…. when I was stationed on the USS TARAWA in San Diego, the heels were playing on TV…and I was proud to be from NC…. that was in 1977….now, over the years of witnessing their poor sportsmanship, I absolutely despise all that they represent.

  14. Gowolves 06/21/2011 at 8:54 PM #

I don’t think BMFD can withhold his phone records if it is alleged he conducted business on his phone. It is no longer personal if this is the case. If the NCAA asks and he refuses which he can then it will look terrible for him if he is not hiding anything.

  15. choppack1 06/21/2011 at 9:03 PM #

whoops. Heels forgot to redact McAdoo. His name is on the cheating allegation.

  16. TAEdisonHokie 06/21/2011 at 9:04 PM #

For those who seem confused about the various steps in an NCAA investigation, the NOA is a listing of possible/probable/known violations of NCAA rules. UNC will get 90 days to respond to those allegations, by either agreeing or disagreeing. But, the NCAA could uncover additional violations during that period of time that may possibly extend past the 90-day window.

Once the 90 days is up, or whatever amount of time it takes to complete the process, the punishment phase begins. In this case, there will will probably be a statement about the loss of institutional control at UNC. I’m guessing there will be a number of scholarships lost per year for two or three years, the possible vacating of wins from 2008 to 2010, and the loss of bowls for two to three years.

Just my opinion, but I don’t see how Butch Davis is going to survive. The AD may also be in a lot of trouble after his repeated assertions that UNC was cooperating with the NCAA investigation.

  17. NCStatePride 06/21/2011 at 9:10 PM #

TAE hit it on the head. This notice doesn’t signal the end of investigation, it just states that the NCAA feels it has enough to proceed to the next phase.

And with respect to the Loss of Institutional Control, don’t get wrapped up in the verbage: What I want to see is punishment, not some magical phrase. The damning thing for Carolina is the NCAA’s acknowledgement that UNC DID NOT ADEQUATELY COMPLY WITH THE NCAA INVESTIGATION. This can not be stated enough.

IF the NCAA decides to REALLY lay the hammer down on UNC, IMHO, it won’t have anything to do with the rules they broke; it will have to do with UNC willingly and knowingly trying to lie and/or mislead the NCAA. Basically, cheating is one thing, but mocking the NCAA is another.

  18. choppack1 06/21/2011 at 9:13 PM #

Basically – it’s the Jennifer Wiley and John Blake show.

No recruiting violations, nothing else out there.

In other words, don’t expect much.

  19. coppertop 06/21/2011 at 9:30 PM #

On the last page of the NOA it mentions if UNC thinks it is in violation of NCAA bylaw 19.5.2.2-(e) which states:

When a student-athlete competing as an individual or representing the institution in a team championship is declared ineligible subsequent to the competition, or a penalty has been imposed or action taken as set forth in Bylaw 19.5.2.2-(e) or 19.7 of the NCAA enforcement program, the Committee on Infractions may require that the individual’s performance be stricken from the championships records and any awards involved be returned to the Association.

Which got me thinking, what championships, UNC football is not part of any championship anything… unless they mean Greg little, who as we all know played for the UNC basketball team in 2008. I’m guessing their final four appearance will have to be vacated in addition to their 2008 ACC championship as well.

I understand there’s alot of smoke in the air in Raleigh tonight. It must be coming from Chapel Hill.

  21. TLeo 06/21/2011 at 9:34 PM #

I think it’s pretty clear that the Holes did not cooperate and indeed lied and mislead the NCAA and that is what might just be enough on top of the other cheating to make the NCAA come down pretty hard on them. I don’t think it will be as hard as we would love to see but I would expect forfeits of two or three seasons, no bowls and loss of at least some scholarships. Those three clowns in charge down there should all be fired as well.

  22. NCSU88 06/21/2011 at 9:36 PM #

They really layed it on the tutor. My question is how could she afford to pay out what she did on a starting teacher’s salary?

  23. choppack1 06/21/2011 at 9:47 PM #

    My question is this:
    Why NOT cheat?

  24. highstick 06/21/2011 at 9:51 PM #

Until Blake and Wiley were served with allegations, they weren’t gonna cooperate. GAWolf, lend your expertise…won’t they start “spilling their guts now” possibly.

I think Choppack is grossly underestimating where this may go.

But there’s something very obvious both on this board and the Packpride board…posters just don’t bother reading what has been written thus far and look like a bunch of boneheads repeating the same erroneous nonsense.

This ball game isn’t even to the 7th inning stretch yet…

Alot of you see ‘the gaps” in unanswered questions. I have a hard time believing that the NCAA investigators don’t see those same gaps, but have to play of the cards and see how they fall.

I suspect there’s still gonna be some more stonewalling from the Blues.
