Russell Wilson can’t make a decision

“It’s a significant portion he would have to return,” said Marc Gustafson, the Rockies’ senior director of player development.

Gustafson also said it would be difficult for Wilson, who is struggling offensively with the Tourists, to return to baseball if he played football this fall.

“It would be hard for him to come back to baseball because he would miss a lot of games and have had so much time away,” Gustafson said.

“It’s an interesting scenario,” Gustafson said. “He’s a premium athlete who doesn’t know what he wants to do. Until we know something different, we consider him to be a baseball player only.

“Would we be disappointed if he chose to play football? Yes, we would.”

Hopefully the people who can’t seem to understand why Tom O’Brien made the decision to not allow star quarterback Russell Wilson’s return in 2011 are starting to get it. Russell has reached the point in his career where playing both sports severely hurts his chances of advancing professionally in either sport and at the same time puts the organizations that have supported him up until this point in limbo.

Russell wanting to play football this Fall is perfectly acceptable. However, why didn’t Russell just delay signing a pro baseball contract to remain enrolled in school, play baseball for NC State with part-time participation in Spring football so that Tom O’Brien and Mike Glennon, who graduated and could have left NC State play immediately this season, would know exactly where Russell stands on playing college football this Fall? What was the hurry to sign a pro baseball contract especially when his baseball career up until that point was a struggle while he had flourished on the grid iron?

Even if his size would eventually keep him out of the NFL, then he could have made more money playing football in the Canadian Football League in the long-term than being a minor leaguer that never makes the Major League.

I hope he plays football this Fall. I will pull for his success at Auburn or Wisconsin or wherever he ends up. However, Russell’s continued indecisiveness shows exactly why Tom O’Brien made the right choice in this situation.

“Hopefully the people who can’t seem to understand why Tom O’Brien made the decision to not allow star quarterback Russell Wilson’s return in 2011 are starting to get it.”

    Not me. Actually the opposite.

I don’t see any “indecisiveness” from RW. It’s clear from everything that’s been reported about this that RW wants to play football in the fall and almost certainly will play football in the fall. Why he’s not being allowed to come back to play here for his senior season does not and will not ever make sense to me.

tvp1, fortunatley for the program and Wolpack fans everywhere, you appear to be in a very small minority on this one. This potentially could have been a decision that severely divided the fan base, but TOB has built up enough goodwill that most people trust his judgement.

“I don’t see any “indecisiveness” from RW.”

    You can’t be serious.

  4. Old MacDonald 05/25/2011 at 12:27 PM #

It looks to me like RW chose to give up college football to play pro baseball, and now a few months later is on the verge of giving up pro baseball to play college football. And he still hasn’t even decided what he wants to do. “Indecisive” is actually too positive a word for his behavior.

Why didn’t he just play out his college baseball eligibility? It looks like he wants to play both sports, and playing college baseball and football is the perfect situation for doing that. He has never been an outstanding baseball player, even at the college level. I never understood his “baseball first” attitiude.

I do. You don’t. Fans can disagree but we are only stating opinions. However I think none of us has anywhere close to an understanding of this as his boss does:

“It’s an interesting scenario,” Gustafson said. “He’s a premium athlete who doesn’t know what he wants to do.”

I will accept Gustafson’s and TOB’s assessment of this situation rather than try to convince anyone that I know better than them.

Tom O’Brien made the correct decision – PERIOD.

My personal opinion, but I think he needs to be spending more time at batting practice and quit taking trips to Auburn…I know it’s got to be tough to make a decision at that age, especially when you’ve been able to play both sports all of your life.

    However, such is the world!

“tvp1, fortunatley for the program and Wolpack fans everywhere, you appear to be in a very small minority on this one.”

Based on what? The people commenting on this blog entry? I have no idea if I’m in the minority or not among NCSU fans. I do know this: if the idea was to defuse the story and take pressure off Glennon, this move has backfired spectacularly.

I remember our last athlete with enough talent to play 2 sports professionally: Andrew brackman

When he was interviewed there was little doubt that he genuinely loved baseball…there was no doubt which one he wanted to play if he had to choose. Not so with rw.

I think he made a financial decision and is struggling on the diamond now. When he played football he was a leader and a difference maker. I hate that its ending up like this but tob made a decision he had to make.

I’m also more than a little irritated at the chorus of “don’t question the coach.” TOB is a far cry from Nick Saban. He’s had one winning season here. His track record at BC shows both (1) that he’s a solid, not spectacular coach and (2) he’s made some personnel decisions, particularly at the QB spot, that didn’t work out so well. To say he’s beyond being questioned on a decision like this is crazy.

  10. choppack1 05/25/2011 at 1:19 PM #

I’m not saying that. I think this is the right decision if you are trying to build a team long term…period.o

I side firmly with O’Brien, and think he showed a lot of poise in dealing with this issue. Wilson is a great athlete and an impressive person, but also seems to possibly be more self-serving than I previously thought and shouldn’t be allowed to continue holding the program hostage to his whims year after year. He basically showed no commitment and very little if any interest in coming back to play football his senior year (he participated in Senior Day last year), then suddenly after batting like crap it’s reported that there’s a 95% chance he’ll play football next season despite the fact that he apparently has not even addressed the issue with management of the Tourists. He basically seems to expect to show up for the games without practicing all Spring again, with a new receiving corps to boot. IF he decides to. The offense they run for Glennon is going to be significantly different, and that’s something that needed to be put in place early on, not when Wilson decides to make a decision. I’m ready to give someone a chance who is dedicated to college football, not trying to be Bo Jackson. Had O’Brien not committed to Glennon he may well have transferred, leaving us with a rusty Wilson at best and Glennon’s backup at worst in 2011. Also, 2012 is lining up to be our deepest, most experienced squad in years, which will match up with Glennon’s senior year after a solid year of experience under his belt. Wilson’s follow-up interview also demonstrated poor judgment. He basically painted himself as a victim, saying he didn’t want to leave and how “tore up” he was about it. All he wanted was a chance. Poor wittle baby. : ( Just what we needed, more ammunition for the media to use to cast us in a negative light. No one ever told Wilson he couldn’t come back. After months of not committing, he was told he would be back-up QB. Worst case, he still would have played some I’m sure. He could have padded his already phenomenal stats, and here’s a novel idea, helped the team win in any way he could. Especially if, God forbid, Glennon gets injured at some point in the season. I’m ready for the Turtle Prince Harry era personally. If we beat UNC for the fifth consecutive time, and go to a bowl in 2011 I will be happy.

That being said, with our luck Wilson will be picked up by an SEC or Big 12 powerhouse of a program with a rare 1 year hole at the QB position. Harrow will transfer to Kentucky, and during the year that he sits out will finally go through puberty. He’ll sound like James Earl Jones, have a jungle of chest hair tufting out the neck hole of his jersey, grow 2 inches and put on 30 pounds of pure muscle. They will both single-handedly lead their teams to national championships.

TVP1, I disagree on the decision making but agree on questioning the coach. I think TOB had to make this decision. The most important being familiarity with receivers. By missing Spring practice RW cannot just walk in and start throwing the ball around. Hell he spent most of last season just throwing it up and letting the receivers make plays. I don’t believe that will work with a young crop of receivers. Fact is he needed to be here for the spring and he wasn’t. If we were using the same system and personnel form last year he would have been okay, but we are not. Letting him compete for the job would not have been fair to either or Glennon. Old system favors RW, new system favors Glennon. Plus you have the potential to divide your team.

As for questioning the Coach, we should all do it. We have not one a Championship in the major sports in 20 years. Until that changes, we have every right and should question our coaches. Support them yes, but if and when they make mistakes, ask why. Fortunately TOB has been very open with our fan base and admitted when has made mistakes. It’s why I like him.

I like Russel Wilson. He is a great young man. I don’t think he will ever be an NFL quarterback, he was athletic enough to scramble around to see downfield in college, but he won’t be able to see over the lineman in the NFL and buy himself time in the NFL before getting sacked. As far as baseball, I doubted he would ever make it to the show, his batting average never been good enough, and it appears he starting to realize that also. I don’t see either as a tragedy he got to play college ball with success and got a shot in the minors. He just needs to come to the same realization that 99% of us have, we are not going to play in the NFL, NBA, MLB, or race nascar. That is why we got a degree from NCSU cause it leads to a good job and a great life, just not in sports. I think Wilson just struggling with the realization so many good college athletes deal with.

O’Brien did what he was supposed to do as a coach- be a leader and make a decision without waffling all summer. He made the right one as far as I’m concerned. Russell Wilson was important to our football program the past few seasons, but it’s time for somebody else to take over at QB and time for this site to move on to another topic. All this talk about whether TOB was right or wrong doesn’t help anything.

  15. bradleyb123 05/25/2011 at 2:54 PM #

People need to realize this wasn’t about TOB choosing between Russell and Glennon. TOB had to make a decision, and there was more to it than choosing one player over the other.

Russell would not commit to returning, or by any particular date. He wanted to be allowed to just waltz back in at his leisure and “compete for the job”. If TOB left that door open, we WOULD have lost Glennon (and who could blame Glennon for transferring if he did?) So for TOB to keep Russell, he would have ONLY Russell. And he may not even have that. And if he did, it may not be until sometime in September.

Best case, we’d have Russell (but who knows WHEN?) and no Glennon. Worst case, Glennon transfers, Russell decides to stay with baseball, and we’re left with NOTHING.

That’s what TOB was facing, and he made the right (no,the ONLY) decision he could make. Russell made this bed, and now he’s lying in it.

“Why he’s not being allowed to come back to play here for his senior season does not and will not ever make sense to me.”

tvp1, where did that come from? He was more than welcome to come back, but TOB told him it would be as the back-up to MG. Wilson decided he didn’t like that arrangement and asked for his release.

  17. whitefang 05/25/2011 at 3:23 PM #

“(2) he’s made some personnel decisions, particularly at the QB spot, that didn’t work out so well”
That I fail to understand. The decisions he has made at QB, for the most part, have worked out pretty well looks like to me. He made a decision to go with a redshirt freshman at qb, who was by all recruiting accounts no more than an average talent, and ended up with one of the best QB’s in ACC history. Pretty damn good decision I think.

  18. Packfan28 05/25/2011 at 3:59 PM #

I’m not saying the coach is infallible or beyond reproach, but I am saying I will trust Tom O’Brien’s judgement in this matter. Let me see, he has coached how many years, and how many winning seasons and bowl victories? He knows the players, knows Russell Wilson, lives this stuff every day of his life. I’m pretty confident he has an idea the impact of this decision will have on the overall program.

Sorry tvp1, I’m sure you are a very astute football person, but I have to go with the coach on this one.

  19. wbnation 05/25/2011 at 4:09 PM #

put it to you this way. If Russell Wilson plays football for any team this fall, he can basically say see yah to baseball and the contract he signed with Colorado. And didn’t the GM say he would have to give money back? There is no way in hell Wilson plays one down of football. Colorado isn’t going to allow it and if he does then the reason for signing the baseball contract (financial) in the first place would be moot. If he does this then he is one big “young” idiot.

  20. logarithm 05/25/2011 at 4:15 PM #

It’s a multifaceted issue with many complex perspectives.

I think Russ made the best decisions for himself, his family and his goal of eventually having careers in both professional baseball and football. You can debate the possibility of him acheiving that goal but he’s working hard toward both.

Had Russ stayed and Glennon transferred, that would have been the best decision for him. I think it’s pretty likely that would have happened, having watched his brother fill in for Steering-mechanism Taylor at VT and then fading back into the ether when he came back.

Knowing these things, the fact that the offense had to be retooled for more experienced backs and less experienced wide-outs and what the recruiting outlook at QB is for next year and the year after, I think TOB made the best decision from the perspective of a coach with limited options who’s trying to look out for the long-term best interest of the ball club and its players. I think he also did the right thing by Glennon, who went last season with the understanding he’d have the starting job after Wilson got his baseball contract and participated in Senior Day and all.

It’s less a rage-inducing situation as a sad unfortunate one. Sometimes everyone’s goals just don’t quite align perfectly and you don’t like to see that at the college level. If he achieves huge success somewhere else and gets into Heismann talks, I’ll be happy for him but disappointed it didn’t happen here. And I hope Wilson doesn’t end up regretting any of his decisions, as difficult as they are.

    Jigawatts,

have you seen our schedule? I still think we could go 12-0 and definitely 10-2. If you followed the spring you would know that our defense is starting to become pretty stout. I would wager that we will finish in the top 20 nationally in points scored. Our linebacking and secondary will be insane, and our defensive line has enough talent to not be a weakness (cannot wait to see Cato-Bishop and Thomas Teal play, high ceilings). Factor in Mike Glennon, who according to Dana Bible and TOB is further along at this point than Matt Ryan. An experienced offensive line and “Moose” Greene, along with arguably the best tight end in the nation in big George. Yeah I think we can handle our scehduled opponents to a 10-2 mark if not better.

Gotta believe brother!!!! You pessimistic State fans are starting to get on my nerves!!!

  22. BladenWolf 05/25/2011 at 4:30 PM #

I don’t think Wilson was indecisive at all. He firmly wanted to have his cake and eat it too. Real life doesn’t work that way and football is a team sport and has other positions besides QB. It sounds like others on this site want it both ways too. What about being fair to Glennon? What about being fair to the receiving corps? The other team members? You know those guys… the ones that showed up to practice in Spring?
I’ve had the pleasure of actually talking with Coach O’Brien about this decision and it was very clear to me that he knows more about the pros and cons of this decision than anyone else.
I don’t know where this talk about Auburn is coming from either but if RW ends up with the Tigers I cannot see him surviving the season under the pressure of SEC defenses. With all due respect, I don’t think he will elude them as easily as he did UNX or FSU.

  23. wolfbuff 05/25/2011 at 4:33 PM #

Hungwolf took the words out of my mouth. Russell may not have a career in either sport professionally. And he’s struggling to decide what to do. Don’t underestimate the influence the loss of his father has had on him. He may be struggling with not having someone to lean on, to tell him the truth and give him guidance. IMO, he should pick one and give it his best effort. What he’s maybe not comprehending is how much more he has to offer the world. 99.9999% of us never play professional sports and lead perfectly happy lives. Russell, if you’re reading this, I hope you make it one sport. But you’re a smart young man that can do anything you want. So, give your dream a shot. But if it doesn’t work out, leave yourself a graceful exit.

  24. wolffpride 05/25/2011 at 4:41 PM #

I think Russell Wilson should play football. His dream was to play professional football and baseball. Why stop now. Everyone and their mother has told him he isn’t big enough to be a QB in the NFL…srew them. And now he is being told that if he leaves the minors for a year, that there wont be a spot for him when he comes back…SCREW THEM. Want to see a champion get made, tell them what they cant do.

  25. wolfpackdawg 05/25/2011 at 5:38 PM #

I think RW KNOWS he is not good enough to make it in baseball. I predict he will leave and play football this fall and try for the NFL.
