Pack Nine Loses to GT in 15

Although it lacks the “must see” nature and heart-racing excitement of football and basketball, baseball has a certain charm to it. For one thing, it’s the organized team sport that more of us played as kids. So we can relate to baseball.

The second is…it’s an untimed sport. When you watch long enough, you will see some really weird shit happen in extra innings. Like at the DBAP tonight – when Georgia Tech scored the winning run on a straight steal of home plate in the top of the 15th inning. I’ve certainly never seen that before. This of course, is on the heels of the Philadelphia Phlillies’ Wilson Valdez – their utility infielder – serving as the winning pitcher after tossing a scoreless 19th inning. The day before tonight’s wild finish! Like I said…weird shit, man.

All is not lost. State has surely locked up a #2 NCAAT seed now. And if the long game takes its toll on the Bees (who turn around to play FSU at 3:00 tomorrow later this afternoon), then the Pack Nine still land a berth in the ACC title game with a win over Clemson on Saturday. If the Bees beat the Noles, then the Pack is out regardless.

FSU still has something to play for, which works in NC State’s favor.

Also good that we get the day off today. Somewhat of a break from a murderous draw.

The game should have been over in 9 innings. Damn, was that Ron Cherry calling balls and strikes? When our guys were batting, the strike zone was somewhere between Winston Salem and Greenville, and for our pitchers it was the size of Butch Davis’ code of ethics.

Hahahahahaha…I completely agree. I really wish Brett Williams could have come up with the diving play late in the game (before extra innings)…especially given the play he made against Free Shoes U.

We certainly had our chances against GT, but just kept leaving runners stranded on base. Just wish the game would have ended sooner. What a long nite. just glad I was watching it on television. Hope things will work out and we will end up, back in the championship.

4got to mention, that the strike had to be as big as the Mississippi river. Ridiculous! And these guys are paid to officate correctly.

I agree the game should have been over after nine for multiple reasons. Painful loss from my perspective. But proud of the pack for a strong battle against a very good GT club.

Stop with the excuses…it makes us sound like Orange County Tech. Just win on Saturday and lets move on.

Agree Pacobee on the grounds you always have an opportunity to take control and help yourself. However, I thought the umpires inconsistency seemed to work against the pack more often than not. I’ve coached alot of ball and that is frustrating. Some umps are pitcher friendly. This one clearly was not.

“Some umps are pitcher friendly. This one clearly was not.”

Dang 13, I completely disagree. Harvey was calling the high strike and inside edge all night long. It was as pitcher friendly as I’ve seen in ages.

Now, that said, when you hit .047 with ducks on the pond…

I thought the umps were too friendly with the high strike, but still responsibility of players to recognize this and make adjustments.

Hopefully FSU can take advantage of a tired and depleted Tech pitching staff. Not sure if the rain delays today will help or hurt the Jackets.

Anyone have a clue who the Tiger and Pack starters might be for tomorrow?

PS. Calling the high strike does not seem pitcher friendly when pitchers try to keep the ball down generally. I think I would like the low stuff called and the outside corner if I’m pitching to power hitters who can hit the high pitches and turn on inside pitches.

“Now, that said, when you hit .047 with ducks on the pond…”

Exactly my thoughts/point. Their pitcher that came in during the 7th? Inning had us torn up with a wicked slider, but we had multiple chances to put that game away and should have.

Agreed that the strike zone was inconsistent and that we should have found a way to win anyway. I was hoping that the lengthy game may work in our favor with GT playing again this afternoon, but now it’s “bleeping” raining and the longer it rains the more rest the GT players get.

I’m exhausted today after watching that entire mess.

Agree with some others on the inconsistencies on pitch calls. I even commented on it being the difference in the game when it was 4-2 GT in the 6th. But from the 7th inning on I don’t think it was a factor in the game.

Williams’ awkward diving overplay of the 2nd fly ball in the 8th was our only defensive mistake in the game. (Perhaps a bit of the universe correcting itself from his miracle catch the night before). That play and the inability to put the ball in play in critical situations (let alone get a hit) is what truly cost us.

Now we go on record as the losing team in the longest ACC Tournament Baseball game ever played. That’s a tough blow to absorb and I just hope the team is able to shake it off and come out strong tomorrow.

If FSU beats GT, then last night’s result wouldn’t have mattered either way.

Bees getting lucky with the rain delays.

All this talk about the strike zone when in fact if GaTech does not make those errors on defense we would have a hard time going to the 10th.

I thought our approach on offense in the extra innings was terrible or they just have a hell of a bullpen.
