Maryland rejected by Miller, Dixon, Stevens & Brey in less than 24 hours

“Sean Miller Staying at Arizona”

Does that headline look familiar to anyone?

Talk about a public spurning?! A very different rejection when the whole world knows that you had a meeting and the guy turns you down before your process even gets going.

Link

Sean Miller is staying at Arizona.

Miller told FOXSports.com he has decided to remain in Tucson, just hours after meeting with Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson in Las Vegas.

For those keeping score — Miller’s flirtation and conversations with NC State lasted weeks before he ultimately backed away after a program-launching-style run into the the NCAA Tournament. His flirtation with Maryland lasted a day.

But, that doesn’t seem to have any impact on the manner in which this is reported by one of the ultimate douches in all of college basketball. Check out Jeff Goodman’s positioning of theses developments in the following quote:

Miller, 42, was thought to be leaning towards going to Maryland, a job he had also held in high regard, but a strong relationship with Arizona athletic director Greg Byrne and success in recruiting were critical in remaining in Tucson.

REALLY, Jeff? He was ‘thought to be leaning towards going to Maryland?’ Really? Thought by whom? Oh yes…the well educated, ill informed stenographers media. Got it!

Those thoughts did last very long, did they?

If the media is nailing this search correctly, then Maryland does not have much to worry about as they Terps still have some big names on their list.

Pittsburgh’s Jamie Dixon, Arizona’s Sean Miller, Notre Dame’s Mike Brey and Villanova’s Jay Wright are expected to rank high on Maryland’s target list as it looks to replace basketball coach Gary Williams, who announced his retirement Thursday, The Washington Post reported today.

Citing college basketball sources across the country and those close to Maryland’s athletic department, The Post reported that the focus of first-year athletic director Kevin Anderson initially will focus on that foursome.

However, the newspaper added that others who could be in the mix include Gonzaga coach Mark Few, a friend of Williams for some time, Minnesota coach Tubby Smith, whose name seems to pop up in connection with virtually every high-profile opening, and Virginia Commonwealth coach Shaka Smart, fresh off an appearance in the Final Four.

Surely all of these coaches will be excited to jump jobs now that they entire world knows that they are (at least) second choice?!

Maybe not. Word is now leaking that both Dixon and Wright may have said ‘no thanks’ to the Terps. None of us can wait for all of the smart alecs in the media to start with their cute little tweets!!!

Additionally, the Washington Post is reporting:

[Mike] Brey will meet with Maryland officials on Sunday to discuss the vacant men’s basketball head coaching position, according to a source close to Brey and to the Maryland athletic department who was not authorized to speak on the record.

Don’t know how Brey feels about being fourth choice (after Dixon and Wright)…but, it looks like we’ll soon see. Personally, this job and process feels like “Tubby Time” to me. But, sooner or later a coach with Tubby’s resume would have a hard time being 5th or 6th choice.

It has been a VERY BUSY weekend for an ‘off-season’ weekend in May as we’ve seen developments in NC State Baseball, basketball recruiting and with the UNC Football scandal. What would happen if they brought Herb in… his ice has gotta be getting thin at asu and i seem to remember a few Md fans telling me we ran off a really great coach. the only thing that would really upset me about it would be i’d have to watch the godawful princeton again…

    Misery loves company. Plus…fuck Maryland.

Well said BJD95…..I hope all they receive are highly PUBLIC rejections..when will the speculation start that Debbie called ALL of their potential candidates and told them what a crappy job it is !! LOL !!!

  5. Old MacDonald 05/08/2011 at 2:44 PM #

Yow should call a press conference and say that Gottfried is happy here and is not taking the Maryland job.

  6. Wolfy__79 05/08/2011 at 2:48 PM #

I have not read all comments or followed this story but any chance Gary was more or less forced out. I would suspect that after the Yow allegations, Maryland at least privately looked into the matter.

I would be curious to know if Maryland thought Williams actions may of been a final straw and asked him to resign. Seems odd that he would choose to leave a month after the championship game.

Williams could of decided on his own but seems more like he was asked to leave.

  8. hoop 05/08/2011 at 3:23 PM #

Re Haze. And then Williams could have called their bluff and said F you. I’m not going anywhere. No way Maryland can fire Williams. Impossible. Not without serious i.e. illegal misconduct.

I meant Re tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc. I would edit the above post but the edit function doesn’t work.

Sendek to Maryland would be too funny. He did have the 2nd or 3rd most in conference wins during his tenure at State.

Karma may come back and bite the Terrapins

No way was the choice to retire made by anyone, but GW. The move is way too self-serving with a complete lack of consideration for the state of the program. They had a full day on Friday dedicated to GW’s announcement on ESPNU.

Plus…GW left with way too much good to say about Anderson, aka “straight shooter”, for me to believe that Anderson asked him to leave. The timing of the announcement is ABSOLUTELY abysmal unless you have someone locked away already to transition into that role.

The current recruits you have will get wondering eyes and it is almost impossible to restock with anyone new IF they choose to leave. It is why getting Gott when we did was so crucial for maintaining most of the stability aside from Harrow (who would probably be going regardless of coach) & Uch (who I still don’t think would have made the grade).

    This is awesome.

    F Maryland AND F Goodman X infinity.

You keep hanging in there and spinning the tale, Goodman. It’s just “not the right timing”, is it Jeff?

    Oh, and F Maryland.

Kevin Anderson getting bashed by several posters on this Washington Post blog. Gives you perspective and validates my appreciation of Yow to a certain extent.

  14. StateFans 05/08/2011 at 4:10 PM #

He [Sendek] did have the 2nd or 3rd most in conference wins during his tenure at State.

That is an absurd ‘statistic’ that is 100% irrelevant in light of the fact that so many successful coaches changed jobs during that time. (If it is even true). He definitely was behind K & G Williams. Every other school changed coaches during those 10 years. Heck…UNC had FOUR DIFFERENT COACHES in 10 years and STILL had more wins than Herb. Wake changed from Odom to Prosser and had more wins. Clemson changed from Barnes to Shyatt to Purnell in those 10 years. Etc, etc

His PROGRAM did NOT have the 2nd or 3rd most conference wins over his decade at State. Not even close.

Funny that a few of the comments are “lets get Shaka Smart”

  16. Lunatic Fringe 05/08/2011 at 4:21 PM #

Maryland fans blaming AD, but not the coach that just suddenly realized he did not want to coach anymore on the day his best player announces for NBA. Yep…all the ADs fault.

I am sure Anderson will be fine. I hear he is a “straight shooter” though it appears GW was not too honest with him if he was caught this unprepared.

  17. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 05/08/2011 at 4:25 PM #

Thanks for the comments… I wouldn’t think Williams would be forced out but I wasn’t sure if there was a chance that after some discussions concerning many issues, Yow just one of them, if Gary was given the chance to retire this year with all the love from the UM, or he could stay but know that he would be under some pressure to perform.

Seems like Smart would be a good fit in Maryland. If UMD could make Shaka an instant millionaire with a signing bonus and a little more than 2 million per he could be better prepared to move than he was when State offered. At the time Smart was between the Final Four and his Grandfather’s funeral.

If not Smart. Are there any Maryland alumnus coaching? Personally, I would be highly supportive of Sendek returning to the ACC.

Can’t wait to see the spin Decourcy, Goodman, Parrish, and all the other “knowledgeable” national media fools put on this one. I think these guys are delusional.

Oh yeah, I also like this: “Over the last two days, the amount of inaccuracies that surrounded this entire process has been very disappointing,” Miller said in a statement.

He’s talking about irresponsible buffoons like you, Goodman.

  19. Lunatic Fringe 05/08/2011 at 4:44 PM #

Up next to bat: Turgeon. I personally hope for another strike out and UMD is back to square 1 on Monday including the hiring of a search firm.

  20. MrPlywood 05/08/2011 at 4:51 PM #

I can’t wait for Andy AssKatz’ follow-up article on this one…

  21. ryebread 05/08/2011 at 5:20 PM #

hahahahahaha to Md. I hope that they struggle mightily and end up with Gregg Marshall after about three weeks of very public Fowleresque styled rejections. If there is a school in the ACC that deserves this due to kharma, it is Md.

  22. Wolfy__79 05/08/2011 at 6:25 PM #

please hwsnbn take this md job!!! pa pa palease!!
