Heading into this weekend CollegeBaseballInsider.com framed the race for NCAA Tournament slots as follows:
ACC (7) – The big news here this week was NC State (11-13, 28-21, RPI 33) dropping two of three to ETSU out of the A-Sun, but the Wolfpack didn’t drop too much in RPI. But this weekend’s series with FSU now is even bigger than it was. Virginia (20-4, 43-5, RPI 1), Georgia Tech (18-6, 35-14, RPI 9), Florida State (16-8, 37-12, RPI 4), Miami (16-7, 31-16, RPI 22), North Carolina (16-8, 39-10, RPI 3) and Clemson (13-11, 34-15, RPI 8) are good to go, some of whom will be national seeds.
Unfortunately, the Wolfpack started the important weekend by losing to the Seminoles, 9-4.
Rafael Lopez homered in each of the first two innings, and sixth-ranked Florida State broke open a 3-2 game with six runs in the late innings to defeat NC State 9-4 in the first game of a three-game ACC series at Doak Field at Dail Park.
The Wolfpack falls to 28-22 overall with the loss, and 11-14 in the conference. The Seminoles improve to 38-12 overall and 17-8 in the conference.
Due to inclement weather on Saturday evening, the Wolfpack and Seminoles will play a doubleheader today. A HUGE doubleheader for NC State…and perhaps Elliot Avent’s future.
