HUGE doubleheader for Pack Nine today

Heading into this weekend CollegeBaseballInsider.com framed the race for NCAA Tournament slots as follows:

ACC (7) – The big news here this week was NC State (11-13, 28-21, RPI 33) dropping two of three to ETSU out of the A-Sun, but the Wolfpack didn’t drop too much in RPI. But this weekend’s series with FSU now is even bigger than it was. Virginia (20-4, 43-5, RPI 1), Georgia Tech (18-6, 35-14, RPI 9), Florida State (16-8, 37-12, RPI 4), Miami (16-7, 31-16, RPI 22), North Carolina (16-8, 39-10, RPI 3) and Clemson (13-11, 34-15, RPI 8) are good to go, some of whom will be national seeds.

Unfortunately, the Wolfpack started the important weekend by losing to the Seminoles, 9-4.

Rafael Lopez homered in each of the first two innings, and sixth-ranked Florida State broke open a 3-2 game with six runs in the late innings to defeat NC State 9-4 in the first game of a three-game ACC series at Doak Field at Dail Park.

The Wolfpack falls to 28-22 overall with the loss, and 11-14 in the conference. The Seminoles improve to 38-12 overall and 17-8 in the conference.

Due to inclement weather on Saturday evening, the Wolfpack and Seminoles will play a doubleheader today. A HUGE doubleheader for NC State…and perhaps Elliot Avent’s future.

We’ve had some bad double-header situations in the past several seasons… this one actually plays into our favor. Playing a double-header helps the inferior team a bit, and- no matter whether you think the margin is large or small- FSU is better this year.

I would throw Mazzoni in the second game… let’s see what happens.

Mazzoni gets the ball in game 1… Avent is playing to try and win 2. Wow.

Scotty McCreery sighting? Did he come back to throw the first pitch or did they fly him back to Hollywood already I wonder??

Pitcher’s duel going in Game 1. 1-1 in the bottom of the 5th. We have a chance to blow it open, though. State has a man on 3rd and one on 1st with 1 out.

^ Or you could follow the game on CBS gametracker through the gopack website.

The double play was a huge bummer. Shake it off boys!

Up 5-2 after six in the first one & couldn’t hold on.

Now up 5-2 after five in the second one… we’ll see…

Won the second game. So, went 1-2 over the weekend. I fear we are going to have a solid enough RPI with way too ugly of a record.
