Dagger: Maryland at risk to lose entire recruiting class…will find way to blame Debbie Yow?

When the SFN team was researching potential NC State Basketball coaching candidates, the primary criticism that we gathered related to Mark Turgeon was that of recruiting. A quick look at his history of his recruiting indicated that he had never/rarely been able to land elite recruits. Well…that trend appears to potentially be continuing.

It’s a good thing new Maryland coach Mark Turgeon began recruiting as soon as he was hired because the Terps may have a few more vacant scholarships than they expected.
According to various reports, all three of Maryland’s incoming freshmen recruits have asked to be released from their letter of intent in the wake of Gary Williams’ abrupt resignation last week. New Jersey point guard Sterling Gibbs and Baltimore shooting guard Nick Faust have said they will still consider the Terrapins, but certainly it’s more common for recruits in this position to go elsewhere rather than sign with their original school.

“We just felt that it was in our best interest to just explore our options,” Gibbs told the Baltimore Sun. “Maryland is still my top priority. But I just want to make sure that it was the best fit for me.”

Next season will likely be a transition year for Maryland regardless of whether Turgeon can keep any of Williams’ recruits, but the rebuilding process will become more difficult if 2011 turns out to be an empty class.

Faust, Rivals.com’s No. 48 recruit, is Maryland’s most highly touted recruit in years and his outside shooting would fill an immediate void. Gibbs, the brother of Pittsburgh star Ashton Gibbs, is also a potential impact recruit. And German forward Martin Breunig would likely receive immediate playing time if he stayed because Maryland is so shorthanded down low in the wake of Jordan Williams’ early departure.
Maryland would be down to eight scholarship players next season if none of the recruits return, but Turgeon is doing his best to retain as many as possible. He’s spoken to each of them already

As this tweet states,

Turgeon has big mountain to climb at MD. Weak roster + losing 2011 recruiting class. Add in slow offense & MD will be hard to watch in 11-12

While we are on Twitter…gotta give a hat tip to Wilmington Star News’ Brett Friedlander for his comment on Twitter (Link)

@starnewsacc Lets see MD fans & ntl media put spin on this. Debbie’s fault? @JeffEisenberg MD in jeopardy of losing entire recruiting class

“Sean Miller stated during the Pack coaching search that it was difficult to recruit here because of the lack of recent success and also hinted that Herb didnt play the style recruits wanted.”

bigwolfpacker, not doubting you, but I thought I read pretty much all of Miller’s comments relating to the search. I must have missed those statements. Do you have a link to these?

Those comments no doubt refelct reality, but I’m surprised Miller would say them openly.

Regardless of what Miller said I have no doubt he would not have missed a beat recruiting here and in due time would have built talent to compete for Final Fours and beyond. Same for Calipari. Let’s see what Gott can do. If he can take our team to the dance in year 1 it will really help his cause. It will be a challenge no doubt but considering how weak the conference is, anything is possible.

Agree. If Gott could recruit basketball players to Alabama, I see no reason why he can’t do as well or better here. Plus he has surrounded himself with good recruiters. I’m amazed at how many things he’s got going on aleady. At this time in Sid’s tenure, he was reeling in Lewandowski.

WHY? All the continued obsession with Maryland? —- Gary Williams is gone… and unless their recruits are coming to NC State, I care about as much about what Boston College is up to on a minute-by-minute basis– as I do Maryland. How about the high road –focus on where we are going with the people WE have employeed. At a point it begins to reflect small-minded, jealous and trivial from the outside looking in. It’s the exact image others try to project in State. It is time to move forward.

    @TomCat-
Because it’s the middle of May and there’s not much else going on in college sports. Because most State fans hate Maryland about as much as we hate UNC, and GW epitomized Maryland’s “a$$hole” image. And because of the recent blood between GW and DY, and the fact that we also just went through a coaching search and their coaching search went very much like ours did, with some public rejections but then ending up with a pretty decent coach. And like NC State, Maryland has won a NC but then fallen into relative mediocrity and is now trying to rebuild again, though admittedly our fall into mediocrity has been much longer. That’s why.

As a native resident of Maryland, I can tell you that Gary Williams, attitude aside, was one helluva coach at Maryland. Like many other “personalities” (Bob Knight comes to mind), he was an ass to deal with outside of the program, but his kids absolutely loved and defended him. Plus, he was pretty good with X’s and O’s throughout his career. Just look at his record against both Carolina and Duke. Not bad at all. He was never thought of as a “nice guy”, but his abilities and his honesty will be missed in the ACC.

    VaWolf82 Says:
May 13th, 2011 at 12:14 pm Thought another primary criticism of Turgeon was that his personality was a bit too Herb-like, so the fan base would be slow to warm to him.

Anyone that said that is too stupid to be allowed outside unsupervised. Has anyone ever heard of Dick Sheridan or Tom O’Brien? Outlandish personality is not required to win over the fan base….only wins.

Anyone who can make such blanket statements about others from reading one comment on a sports blog website might be the more stupid one.

Besides that both Dick and Tom make Jim Valvano look like a shy child when you compare their personality to Herb. Can we move on past the mistake called Herb Sendek?
