Clemson Eliminates NC State, 6-3

The Pack Nine got the help they needed from Florida State, but couldn’t help themselves against the Tigers. Clemson drilled a 3-run homer to take a 4-3 lead in the 6th, and they never relinquished it. Had NC State defeated Georgia Tech in Thursday night’s marathon, the Clemson loss would still have eliminated the Pack.

Next up is NCAA play, where State will almost certainly be a 2nd seed. Best of luck next weekend to Avent and his charges.

Off to Columbia to get our hides tanned by South Carolina…

Really a very disappointing season. Hope we can pull a little magic next week but I wouldn’t bet on it.

I didn’t see much for criticism in the games I saw (both losses). But I didn’t really expect much, either. I’m interested to see us play next weekend. They certainly compete harder than the basketball has in eons!

That’s twice in 6 months the Seminoles have backed into an ACC championship game.

    FSU…you are very welcome.

I am sorry but State baseball needs a new leader. Avent has had 15 years for 0 ACC Championships. The man coaches Not to lose.

Take down the Billboard about State not settling for the status quo. I don’t want to read that BS. Belliot Avent is the poster child for the status quo.

Our destiny was in our own hands and we squandered it. Why was DJ pulled so early? In either case, get the arms rested for the regionals. Packhowler, nice play on words!

    Another WTNY.

Dang, if I’d known this I wouldn’t have held the door open for this old dude today wearing an ugly Tigger hat..

The question is though…are we still going to get in or was this the last game??? Gamecocks got eliminated by Vandy and Jawja, but still will get a good seeding…Everyone likes to win them all, but sometimes it’s a detriment.

Don’t watch much baseball but we didn’t seem to be nearly as talented as Clemson.

Saw the game and it appeared Clemson was the much better team. We are average at best in the ACC. Very strong league but we clearly aren’t one of the big dogs. I’m ready for a change.

“The Pack got the help they needed from Florida State, but couldn’t help themselves against the Tigers. ”

Where have we seen that headline before? 🙁

Is State a lock for the NCAAs? Another season in yet another sport where the Wolfpack hopes that the strength of the rest of the league can carry them to the playoffs.

I just don’t think that this is a very good State team. Good teams with good coaching don’t blow 6 straight innings of being able to walk off with victory, then throw it away by allowing the opponent to steal home in the top of the 15th.

If they go to the regionals, they’ll be lucky to see over 3 more games.

Hard to get on this team about ‘not being very good,’ when the strengths it was built upon was effectively nerfed with the bat changes this year. To still be competitive against an ACC with 6 teams in the top 20, to still take wins, series, and even sweeps against some of those teams, is hardly ‘not very good.’ Maybe not where we want to be, but not worth crapping all over either.

People are again calling for a coaching change, and people may be right…but we once again have to consider, will we be getting something better, or will we be getting something worse? I don’t want to stick with the status quo, but I don’t want to go any lower than we already are.

I think we have lots of lower-hanging fruit (in terms of athletic department problems) to pick before even considering whether or not we should replace Avent.

Frankly, I think he’s shown enough to either (i) be left alone to run a competitive program on the cheap; or (ii) get a legitimate chance to see if he can achieve more with additional funding/resources. I would probably go with the first option for now. I don’t think pouring $$ into baseball would be the best use of resources.

BJD, I found this little tidbit to provide some insight here to this discussion. Is $112,150 as a base salary a good bargain? Sure. But after 13 years, would even a cheaper change be warranted after that many swings and misses for both conference championship and CWS appearance? Mike Fox gets about $45,000 more than Avent, don’t you think he’s worth that little an increase? When Brian O’Connor was hired at UVa, he had never been a head coach, and I think he’s made Littlepage look like a genius. There are plenty of baseball coaches out there, affordable ones. We can afford paying little for little. We should also be able to afford paying a little more for more.

I think the coach should have gotten himself tossed by arguing the inconsistant strike zone. Terrible umpiring behind the plate for the entire ACC Championship.

He seems to have done just enough again to hang on. That’s no way to be. Too bad money may keep us from possibly achieving more.

“He seems to have done just enough again to hang on.”

THE recurring theme of NCSU athletics…..
