The hits keep coming!  Today Art Chansky posted this piece, thereby joining the growing media chorus lampooning Butch Davis’ “Sergeant Schultz” act. This Chansky product would merit examination in its own right — Chansky is very critical of Butch Davis, Dick Baddour, and Holden Thorp. But in the midst of all that Chansky drops a huge bomb I had not seen before from a legitimate source:
So whether or not Butch Davis knew about the escapades of Marvin Austin, Robert Quinn, Greg Little and, more recently, Quinton Coples and three other players who attended a post-NFL draft party, it does not matter in the eyes of the NCAA.
Whoa Nelly! Let’s hold on right there and talk about that. Are we to assume these “three other players” are current UNC-CH football players!? Wow!  This just gets bigger and bigger. Here is our original entry on the Coples incident if you forget the details.
I think I can speak for everyone and express amazement that the ironclad “sign out sheet” system failed. Remember, so far, UNC-CH’s only explanation of the Coples incident has been Baddour saying that the sign out sheet system is a work in progress and has had “glitches.” Seriously! That sounds like comedy writing but that literally has been their only defense so far. Read this N & O piece if you don’t believe me. Not only did Coples somehow outmaneuver Butch’s complex “sign out sheet” scheme, but apparently so did a few other tricky players.Â
I imagine an exchange UNC-CH might have with the NCAA could go like this:
NCAA: “So you had multiple amateur players traveling to a party that had at least one agent runner in attendance about a year after an almost identical incident rendered Marvin Austin and Greg Little permanently ineligible? What do you have to say for yourselves?”
UNC-CH: “Hey, our sign out sheet system is a work in progress and has had glitches. We would also like to add that Butch knows nothing, everybody does it, and this will all be over by Friday.”
Chansky’s piece from today also got in this surprising shot:
Meanwhile, a chancellor who seemed to have the right perspective when all this started has instead fallen into “lockstep†with the athletic department and Trustees in what now looks like a growing game of dodge ball. No more documents, phone records or parking tickets flowing to the media under the Freedom of Information Act until all appeals are exhausted.
If you are like me and don’t really know who Art Chansky is, you can read this entry from last December that covers Chansky’s exit from Tar Heel Sports Properties, whatever that is. It seems Chansky may have been forced out after the discovery of an email he wrote that was vaguely critical of Butch Davis and went on to anticipate a search for Butch’s replacement. Chansky has written some books about UNC-CH sports and apparently is (or was) a pretty big wheel in the UNC-CH cracker factory, so this type of criticism is very significant coming from him.
