CFN looks at the Pack

CFN takes a look at the Pack. This seems to be a fairly good overview.

They point out that Greene is the key to the offense and TOB has always liked a strong running game.

I did take exception to this statement

Key game: Nov. 5 vs. North Carolina. Coming off what figures to be a challenging trip to Tallahassee, the Wolfpack hosts its most intense rival, Carolina. The two programs are constantly vying for local recruits and top billing in the state. Although the Heels have been more successful in February, the Pack has dominated on the field as of late

What February success? Do they mean bowls?
TOB is 1-1
BMFD is 1-2

National Signing Day is the first Wednesday in February. I think they’re alluding to UNX’s recruiting being better than ours, with little to no results.

Stahhsssss on signing day don’t equal success on gameday!

  3. tann84 05/19/2011 at 2:33 PM #

He’s talking about signing day. Recruiting which UNC has killed State over the last 4 years. I mean when you’re offering free trips to Miami and Cali thats hard to compete with.

How is anything that happens in recruiting a “success”? Pack fans, more than any other, should know that.

    Wins are all that matters.

  5. wolffpride 05/19/2011 at 2:51 PM #

They have only killed in recruiting 3 years. Last years freshmen class was beast. We pulled 4 top in state recruits but DE Hunter didn’t qualify, but still 3.

LOL, I figured it was a typo and they meant march (basketball)

That’s what gets lost in the shuffle way too often in the internet era – recruiting is only a means to an end. Not the “end” itself. Not even close. Who gives half a shit about recruiting if it doesn’t lead to meaningful, memorable results on the field?

“Who gives half a shit about recruiting if it doesn’t lead to meaningful, memorable results on the field?”

That is where I was going.
There are certain coaches that can take chicken crap and make chicken salad so to speak.

Butch can sign them, but He not good at getting them on the field.

As far as stars go, they win. But if you have a good eye for talent then you can win with 2 and 3 stars. A lot of times the only difference in a 2 or 3 star and a 4 star is a yr or two of maturity so by the time they are juniors and seniors they are equals.

    Excellent points, BJD and bigwolfpacker.
SURE, it’s good news to get a 4*/5* recruit.
But, imho, it’s EVEN BETTER to get a 2*/3* that becomes all-ACC and/or NFL (Russell Wilson and so on).
That’s one thing i like about TOB – he is one of the better coaches at exactly that.

The truth is a lotta guys we both have recruited have seem to be going to UNC, however I expect our recruiting fortunes to improve as we get better results in the win column. Getting wins is the best recruiter and I think last years results will begin to take effect on recruits as long as we are headed in a positive direction. I will also note that some of these 2 and 3 star recruits are just that because recruiting services have not evaluated them as throughly as others. For example I have seen rivals rate a guys 4 stars and Scout rate the same guy with 2. Some of these players are in areas that may not be as heavily recruited or evaluated, that has nothing to do with their talent. Which to me begs the question what was Phillip Rivers, Russell Wilson, Nate Irving, or even George Bryan. Just like O’brien said, Our goal is that these guys leave as 5 stars players, not necessarily be that coming in.

  13. blpack 05/19/2011 at 7:43 PM #

They get the players in February, we get the wins in November. Hard to compete with the perks they give away. That said, we get it done when it matters.

  14. MrPlywood 05/19/2011 at 8:19 PM #

It’s not a rivalry until UNX wins once in a while…

  15. tann84 05/19/2011 at 8:23 PM #

Sorry to burst everyone’s bubble. But if you take a look at reality and look at the teams who win year in and year in college football and realize they get a hefty amount of the 5 and 4 star players.

Of course its just a means to an end but there is a reason why the good teams recruit the best players. We need to start recruiting at a high level if you want to have talent to compete with FSU for the ACC title. All this shows is that Butch Davis is a terrible coach.

No bowls in February. They must mean signing day. Which means…what exactly? What have they done with all their stars? 8 wins, no better than .500 in conference, cannot beat NCSU, 1-2 in 3 crappy bowls.

Here’s some stars for you: Russell Wilson, 2 stars, 3-0 vs UNC.

They can take their stars and shove them straight up their asses….

  17. runwiththepack 05/19/2011 at 8:46 PM #

NCSU has good players all over the field again for the first time in several years(if injury bug don’t bite). DB is still a bit suspect, but last year was TWO steps up from the previous, DB injury-ridden year. And the DBs are still mostly underclassmen that should just get better this year. Could actually be a good year for passing D.
IF O’Brien can win JUST ONE MORE vs. UNC this year, then i would predict that the recruiting picture, especially in-state recruiting, would tilt in NCSU’s favor. NCSU could seize the opportunity to get the upper hand, despite efforts of the UNC privileged ruling elite to the contrary.
If I remember correctly, Sweezey, who came to Raleigh as a linebacker, was given a try in his freshman year at SAFETY! From safety to DT! Amazing!
Can’t wait for football season. Season tix on 35 yard line!

  18. travelwolf 05/20/2011 at 1:24 AM #

My worry is that Butch gets kicked out and the new coach actually knows how to develop recruits. Let’s face it, we couldn’t have beat UNC 4 times in a row without Butch’s incompetence. Let the devil have his due…

Some should photoshop that picture of “I support Butch” to change the color of the shirt to red… and make the face a little more intelligent looking.

  19. ZZ 05/20/2011 at 8:39 AM #

travelwolf^ Tried to post a pic of myself and dad @ UNX game last year in our RED “I Support Butch” shirts I had made for the game. (wasnt able to post a pic) The pic you occasionally see here on SFN is a close up of a friend of mine who i gave one of the extra shirts to. Pic may or may not have been more intelligent looking.

travelwolf: I agree. I was quite concerned that UNC might fire Butch and hire Edsall. Edsall could have taken all that talent and actually get it over the top. He was a solid hire for MD, but I’m not sure he inherits enough to kick start his recruiting so that he can get to the top.

  21. chriscgray 05/21/2011 at 11:18 PM #

I definately think Edsall is a good coach too, however I think he is too conservative in strategy to make a lot of noise with the mediocre talent in Maryland. The Big East is a far cry from the ACC with FSU, Clemson, Miami, UNC, VT, and of course NCSU. I think he can get Maryland to consecutive bowls, but not win the conference.
