WSJ: Gottfried works at keeping recruits

We have a whole gaggle of Mark Gottfried and NC State article and discussions in our Basketball Message Forum that can be viewed by clicking here. Look around and do some catching up.

This article from today’s Winston-Salem Journal focuses specifically about NC State commitment, Tyler Lewis.

Coach Mark Gottfried, in only a week, has made slight progress keeping N.C. State’s basketball commitments intact, but he’ll know more next week, after visits with two players.

Gottfried, named the N.C. State basketball coach on April 5, is working on three players who committed to the program under the former coaching staff of Sidney Lowe, who resigned in March after five seasons.

Tyler Lewis, a Forsyth Country Day junior and a member of the recruiting class of 2012, said Tuesday he’s still firm in his decision to play for the Wolfpack.

Gottfried and his coaches will visit next week with Jaqawn Raymond, a senior in Statesboro, Ga., who is in the class of 2011, and with Josip Mikulic, a junior in Coral Springs, Fla., who is in the class of 2012, according to the players’ coaches.

Lewis, a 5-foot-11 point guard, said he talked to Gottfried last Thursday and told him he had no problems with the coaching change and that he will play for N.C. State starting in October 2012.

“I wanted to stay with N.C. State,” Lewis said. “I feel comfortable down there. It takes a lot (off my mind).”

In the end, the big difference in this coaching change verses last time is probably going to be the transition. All news about lingering recruits has been positive so far.

One caveat, I’m not saying these guys aren’t good, but there aren’t any super highly rated recruits that might would be more likely to get stolen away, so the challenge might not be as great.

But if I was any recruit, I would be jazzed about playing for this new staff.

What’s the word on current players though, especially Harrow? He sounded kinda like he was wavering.

Had some spare time this morning and did some in depth Due Diligence on Gottfried and Lutz. The more I read, the more I am impressed. Each had a stellar career as a student in high school and college. Each has had a stellar career as a HC….Now, I KNOW that folks will immediately start making the HWWNBSOHA comparison….but these guys seem down to earth. They have great personalities and they know how to recruit (based on history) and coach.

    Can’t find anything negative….

Glad that Tyler Lewis is coming on board.

Also wondered about some of the team…..I think, and hope, that they will see the wisdom of continuing to play for NCSU. The credentials of the new coaches are great…they are still probably a little shell shocked.

Give them some slack and let them come around. I am very optimistic about what I see so far and expect it to improve.

I see Harrow’s Tweets, and he doesn’t seem negative at all. I think it’s a misconception that he’s wavering. Sure, he’s going to get to know everybody and think and stuff, which is what he said when asked, but he’s not negative. I would be surprised if he decided to make a change.

Harrow was the only guy I was worried about. But I believe he is staying. J. Hodge tweeted that he will be working out with Harrow this summer. Doesn’t sound like a guy leaving NC State, and if he was, I’m sure Hodge would be in his ear all summer. Hodge expects everyone to stay, as he said on the radio, and so do I; it just doesn’t make sense for anyone to leave right now and sit out a year.

Brown already said he is staying and he will be the team leader next year it seems like. CJW is going to his senior season so it is unlikely that he’ll leave, Wood I’m not scared of leaving although he might. Painter/Howell will get too much playing time to leave, why sit out a year when you could be playing? I don’t see Jordan V. leaving and he might not be able to because of his visa. Then there is CJL who I don’t think will leave because he wants to be in the NBA in 2012. I don’t see that happening with him transferring and having to sit a year. Also he isn’t even mocked to go in the second round this year, its best for him to wait a year before testing the NBA waters.

As far as the recruits go the only guy I’m concerned about is Uchebo since I haven’t heard anything from him. Tyler Harris and Lewis have both said they are coming and we’ll see about the two others. Hopefully we can add to our 2012 recruits. Torian Graham and TJ Warren from WOG would be needed additions to the team. Hopefully the coaching staff can impress them and others in 2011 and get them to sign for 2012.

I’m actually more interested in seeing if we can step up our recruiting.

    Tann84 and Newt,

Thanks for that info and insight. I think that Scott Wood spoke his mind right after the press conference. He is pretty leveled headed and probably has a future as a good coach.

I don’t frequent the Twitter stuff, so your posts were really nice to read.

Folks had commented about Julius Hodge and Mark’s staff…doen’t sound like a mesh, but it is great having Hodge around.

    Thanks,

Please keep in mind that the 24 hrs leading up to Gottfried’s hiring was a crazy one for our team. They went from thinking they were going to “Get Smart”, to the infamous letter, to Gottfried (who?). As 18-22 year old men, it’s easy to get caught up in the moment and in emotions. Heck, most of the folks on the boards were in a WTF mood as well. I’m pretty much willing to ignore/forgive any comments made right around the hire.

I have seen Tyler Lewis play in High School. Good player and glad he’s staying, but my guess is Gottfried could get equal or better talent if he had to for the 2012 incoming class. I think it is important to keep the High School seniors who have committed so that this year’s incoming class doesn’t have gaps.

The WSJ header fooled me until I read further. I thought, “Why are we getting any mention in the Wall Street Journal?”

  10. JeremyH 04/13/2011 at 11:42 AM #

“Neither Quentin Jackson, Uchebo’s coach at Word of God Academy, nor Roshown McLeod, Harris’ coach at St. Benedict’s Prep, returned phone messages and emails from the Journal on Tuesday.”

that’s ok, they let the answering machine get it.

  11. Packfan28 04/13/2011 at 11:57 AM #

There is no issue with Uchebo not coming here. The only question is will it be this year or next. His transcripts are in such shambles due to all his transfers, there is a very real possibility he may not qualify until 2012.

  12. Wufpacker 04/13/2011 at 12:06 PM #

Anyone heard anything more about Payne, the PG from Iowa who had been recruited by MG but went to Iowa after MG resigned? Last I heard he said (in not so many words) that he was excited that MG was back and actively coaching. IIRC, he’s already been released from his scholly and would not even have to sit out a season.

Anyone know anything more about him?

  13. tann84 04/13/2011 at 12:22 PM #

@Packfan28 Uchebo is in the 2011 class, he had reclassified to 2012 but changed back to 2011, he is suppose to be good to go but with those things you never know, its best to wait and see. We all remember what happened with L. Brown.

@Wufpacker He supposedly started the transfer process but the school he is transferring to is uncertain. If I hear anything concrete I’ll just add it to the comments.

  14. Packfan28 04/13/2011 at 12:25 PM #

tann84, he was supposed to be good to go, but the situation has changed in the past two weeks. Like you say, you never know, but this one isn’t looking too promising.

  15. Wolfy__79 04/13/2011 at 1:08 PM #

i think they all stay without question. i can understand why any of them would think about it..

i like the way MG is sticking to his commitment when he said the current players and recruits are his top priorities..

  16. UnclePen 04/13/2011 at 5:18 PM #

I hope they all stay, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they do. The only thing I would say is that he needs to get them to buy into his style and not bend to theirs. I think CJL needs be more of a hustler for example. If these guys will work hard and try hard to win I want them to stay, but a new Coach has to make sure he is in charge, not the players.

  17. Wolfy__79 04/13/2011 at 6:00 PM #

i would think that MG’s high post and a little up tempo has to be attractive to our players now and those in the future. of course, i’m most anxious to see how we look defensively..

  18. anthonygrundle 04/13/2011 at 6:52 PM #

I’ve seen Lewis play as well. His handle is tremendous. Questions about lateral quickness and overall athleticism seem to be the issue. Kinda reminds me of Randolph Childress, displays the same tenacity during the game.

Don’t hang me ‘Roo, but what exactly does HWWNBSOHA mean? I’m guessing it has something to do with Herbalicious but couldn’t crack the code. Paging Dan Brown…

  19. fullmoon1 04/15/2011 at 12:02 PM #

Joe Ovies just tweeted that Uchebo is requesting to be let out of commitment.

  20. chriscgray 04/15/2011 at 3:28 PM #

That leaves us with only 4 bigs on the roster next year. We need to find a way to get another big man for next year.

  21. TomCat 04/15/2011 at 8:23 PM #

Who says — we are going to grant Uchebo a release?…. Fowler isn’t steering this ship anymore….. The queen is calling the shots…. and she plays hardball. Where is there news we are granting release?

  22. chriscgray 04/15/2011 at 11:21 PM #

We already have, plus I don’t want anyone who doesn’t wanna be at State. It would be unproffesional and stupid if we didn’t release him. I wish him the best and hope he will reconsider to join us.

Chriscgray is right … it was the right thing to do.

Can we get a little more (any) coverage of Uchebo asking for his release? Any chance he’ll be back?
