UNC-CH Spring Game attendance: friends and family only (updated Sunday p.m. with lots of bonus pictures)

As you can see in the picture, those super-loyal UNC-CH football fans turned out literally by the dozens for their Spring Game, creating what must have been a big-time football atmosphere!  How did the wide receivers hear the signals over all the crowd noise?  Recruits must have been impressed.

Let’s all take bets on the “announced attendance.”

***********
7:25 p.m. Saturday update.  Predictably ludicrous crowd estimates are spinning out of Chapel Hill.
“10,000” was the announced to the crowd.  Hilariously, the News and Observer coverage goes even further.
in a 45-minute controlled scrimmage of about 50 snaps in front of a crowd UNC estimated at 15,500 at Kenan Stadium.
… one of four quarterbacks to see action in front of 15,500 fans on an overcast day in Chapel Hill.

**********

Sunday a.m. update.

For everyone wondering if perhaps the picture of just one side of the stadium gave an unfair representation, here you go.  Remember, this is what a Kenan Stadium crowd of 15,500 looks like according to our local media. (The “15,500” estimate was repeated in today’s N & O print edtion).   I don’t even think an estimate was necessary.  An actual head count was possible.  The N & O and WRAL should be ashamed of themselves.

and

and here is one from the N & O.  They must have used this one to calculate the 15,000 number.

These last two are from genefoto.  The one with the cheerleader is a shot of the endzone not pictured thus far, giving us 360 degree coverage.  You will notice that there are not 15,000 people in that endzone.

By the way, Wolfy – I love Carrboro… specifically, the extremely high-quality food & drink options available in a 3-block span. Traffic in front of Weaver Street Market is still deplorable, but except for that, it’s very livable.

I just don’t go back the “jink” where Main Street turns into Franklin Street…

15,000? typical Tarhole BS. They lie and cheat at everything, even spring practice game attendance.

    Estimated by who?

Biff and Buffy as they compare knots and how to tie sweaters over their shoulders?

If Biff and Buffy estimated 15,500, one can accurately report an “estimated” crowd of 15,500.

  4. TOBtime 04/10/2011 at 2:10 PM #

^Why yes, tj, as they were being escorted by “Connor” and “Barth”.

Biff is a guy, so that sounds about right.

Maybe it’s like the story in Australia during the floods:

“Part of what it means to be a Queenslander is to laugh in the face of adversity,” she said. “As I travelled through flood ravaged towns I witnessed our sense of humour act as a source of strength.”

She pointed to Baralaba residents, who got a few chuckles when a local farmer told a journalist he’d lost “30 sows and pigs,” and was surprised the next day to find the headline “30,000 pigs swept away”.

Although I can’t figure out what 15,500 sounds like.

15,500 sounds like several TONS of pig crap is what it sou8nds like.

You guys are looking at this all wrong. The crowd estimators estimated the crowd 3 times during the “game”. Each time, they estimated ~5000 people. Assuming nobody stays until the end of the game (safe assumption) or even a whole hour (still safe?) that makes 15,000 people. Simple math.

    Packfan28 Says:
“My guesstimate looking at the picture is about 3500 tops.”

    Probably 3500 bottoms as well.

I just about spewed beer out my nose on that one…..too funny!

    ” Although I can’t figure out what 15,500 sounds like. ”

Sounds like someone was giving someone else directions home on the 15-501 and the “official estimator” got confused and wrote the wrong number down.

  12. Wlfpk4Life 04/10/2011 at 8:52 PM #

Maybe they meant 15,500 if you combined the total number of fingers, toes, and eyes, including the football players and coaches.

highstick that is very funny. Drunks, panhandlers and drug addicts.

Old campus at UNC is beautiful around silent sam, wilson library and the planetarium. Sad to say NC State and even Duke don’t have anything to really compare. Also UNC itself is outstanding with great teachers and rich academic tradition in sciences, arts, medicine, law and business. Its just the fans are such assholes.

My wife, a graduate of the University of New Jersey in Durham North Carolina (just off of 9th street) asked me who was E. Smith. I said I never heard of E. Smith. She said well this big building at unc is named after some Dean (academic dean). I said dean was his first name. She thought it was tacky to name a building after someone that is still alive. I said “well there is no accouting for taste”!!!

Isn’t it obvious…it was such an effective “white-out” that the fans kinda blend in with the seats.

The family and I will be out of town this weekend, but would be attending the Spring Game if we were here…

So, in the spirit of Carolina Football, please add the four of us to the official attendance number !

    Thanks.

Butch must have been proud of the crowd, He celebrated by eating at the bar at Outback in Durham .

He was not wearing Carolina Blus .

I would have to agree that the UNC campus was a lot more attractive in the pre-80’s(ballpark time frame). Franklin Street just isn’t the same, just like Hillsborough St isn’t the same either.

I still do like Top of the Hill though, but that’s barely across Columbia Street. One of my friend’s son is one of the managers and he always comps a few microbrews when I go in.

The first football game that I went to over there in Sept 1963, Kenan looked like it was in the middle of a field. Those pines were scrubs then and it seemed like the stadium was a long way from campus. I you remember back then, we played them over there every game because Riddick was too small to handle the crowd.
