Spring Game coverage/discussion

Here are stories from the News and Observer and WRAL covering the Spring game.  WRAL has some video also.

Apparently the defense looked excellent.  Those of you who were able to go, you can use the comments section of this entry to discuss your observations.

Check out the waterfalls in this picture of Carter-Finley from today.  UNC-CH’s “official crowd size guessers” have been consulted and estimate that there are 10,000 people in this picture.

    How was the attendance today?

  2. mak4dpak 04/16/2011 at 10:43 PM #

I don’t know the official count, but it was clearly many times larger than that of the holes. But if the holes estimate 10,000 for the above picture, then we probably had in excess of 100,000.

    Gopack.com says 13,139.

About the game, I think Glennon gave some cause for concern, as he did not seem very sharp with his passing game.

Hope everyone got home safely. I had a couple friends at the game and it sounded like the D is way ahead of the O. Typical for a Spring game. Lots to work on before August, but that is to be expected.

Somebody took a massive dump in the latrine on the west side nearest the scoreboard. It splattered all over the walls and door. Disgusting. There were people taking photos of the bedlam with their cameras.

Also have to keep in mind the rain and wet field. Offense is also usually slower than defense in the beginning.

At the game, and rain or wet field not there. Storm was later, after game had been called due to impending weather on the way.

That pic is what our gutters looked like – all of them. Just too much water, too fast.

I’ll take a report that the defense looked good & run with it… I don’t have a serious concern about Glennon’s capabilities… if the defense looked stout, that’s only good news to me.

We’ve had plenty of spring games where we scored a ton of point, and everyone was excited – only to have a sieve-like defense that fall. I’ll take this over that any day.

I’m not basing this on one scrimmage but Glennon throws the ball so hard making him susceptible to richochet INT’s.

I hope he doesn’t throw lots of picks.

Mark was pointing out on Raleigh radio that glennon’s missed throws could also be attributed to green receivers running bad routes.

    My observations from the game:

Several receivers just dropped Glennon passes that hit them in the hands and a couple were very catchable balls. Even though Glennon generally got rid of the ball pretty quickly, he got “touch” sacked several times and had several tipped passes, I think 2 turned into INT’s (1 Manning ran back for a TD). Washington looked pretty good running and catching out of the backfield. Bryan had a good catch and run. The D definitely is ahead of the Offense at this point.

The stadium event (I wasn’t able to enjoy the pre-game events) was well coordinated. They had all the pieces there, small band, Cheerleaders, Dance Team, Mr. & Mrs. Wolf, Tuffy, former, present, and future players. Coach Gottfried already had a Bball promo that ran on the Jumbotron and he gave an rousing interview to the mostly standing fans at half time. He talked a good game, and genuinely seems to appreciate the fan base. I managed to dodge the worst of the weather on the way back west, hope you and yours fared well.

Here are some actual pictures taken, from the N and O website showing the HOME side while the game was actually being played.

I was there at the 50, east side, row 1, beside George Bryan’s mom and little sister.

D looked sharp, aggressive. Offense ran better than threw. Very surprised at how many batted balls Glennon had. He hit short to shorter intermediate passes all day. Could not stretch the field at all. #88 dropped is best deep pass right in front of me. Turned his head to run as he was trying to catch the ball.

Everything was great. Looking at UNC pics and our crowd, I’d say we had 2 1/2 to 3 times the attendance easy, fwiw.

Attendance is dissapointing. I went to the game two years ago, and we had 20,000ish. Figured since we came off a 9 win season attendance would be higher.

^I know a lot of people that didn’t want to come because of the weather….

  20. NCStatesman 04/17/2011 at 11:16 PM #

The seats under the upper deck overhang were packed. You can’t see that from the photos. It didn’t rain at all so I don’t know why they stayed there. I kind of figured that would be an issue with the photos.

I dont think we need to worry about the offense or Glennon at all. The defense has been playing against MG for awhile now so they know his tendencies as well as the offensive sets. It is expected that they would do well against the first string offense breaking in new backs and receivers. I noticed that 17 different players caught balls Saturday and that will make us very hard to defend. MG has a cannon for an arm and may throw the ball with a lot of zip and that may cause the occasional tipped interception but it will also decrease the time a defender can break on the ball for a pick as well. MG will throw some picks this year but we are in very good hands with him and Dana Bible running the show. Look for Dana to use TG Graham to stretch the field this year with the deep ball. The optimism that TOB is showing is a good indication of where he feels this team is right now. I believe he sees an excellent football team and this could be our year.
    GO PACK!!

Love me some Earl Wolfe…looks to be a major player on D again this year.. Anyone know if he was a “ranked”/”starred” recruit or is he just a TOB magic insight guy?
