SFN goes on the ‘Twitter offensive’; (obvious) analysis of the coaching search

My flight landed in Houston this afternoon…and before I could get off the tarmac my phone was met with a barrage of texts and emails and phone calls about all hell breaking loose in the NC State men’s coaching search.

Maybe this is one of those times when it is beneficial to not be sitting around the office glued to the computer and therefore singularly focused on (any topic) the coaching search?

Now that I’ve had my fill of Berryhill Tamales and found a Panera to buy my $2 coffee so I don’t feel guilty for using ‘free’ wi-fi, I’ve secured a couple of minutes to chime in regarding the rapid developments of this afternoon — namely the reported ‘spurning’ of the NC State job by Shaka Smart, Gregg Marshall and Mick Cronin.

As you recall, the News & Observer reported late last week that (1) VCU’s Athletics Director said that NC State had not contacted Shaka Smart and (2) Gregg Marshall had not even been contacted by NC State.

…And today we learn that three coaches who had not even been contacted by NC State have ‘turned down’ NC State’s job! CLASSIC!!!

If you are new to SFN, then you may have missed this great entry from earlier in the year where one of our authors took the time to explain to you why some national sports media are…well…national sports media as opposed to members of MENSA or any well-respected profession or cutting edge corporate organization.

I very much encourage you to give it a whirl. It will help you understand how these ‘Einsteins’ can’t figure out what couldn’t be more clear to me right now — The moment I got the news that Mick Cronin and Gregg Marshall had ‘turned down’ a job that they were never offered, was the moment it became clear to me that Debbie Yow’s search for the next NC State Men’s Basketball Coach is over.

Unfortunately, the media is littered with morons like ‘SportsbyBrooks’, Gary Parrish and CBS’ Matt Jones who continue to prove that their depth of analytical thought runs about as deep as their paper-thin resumes and pre-pubescent looking pictures. (How old does one need to be to have a CBS Twitter account? Seriously?!)

So…the following is what we think/speculate is happening/has happened today:

  • NC State has either secured, or is very close to securing an agreement with our next head basketball coach.
  • The search firm has shared that information with other potential candidates and those coaches – like Marshall and Cronin – have run to the media and their fans ‘spurning’ jobs they were never offered. (Unfortunately, too many in the lazy media just regurgitate what self serving agents and coaches tell them to be true.) It is called saving face and politically posturing for their current situations. I understand it. But, I don’t like it.
  • To give credit where it is due, our local sports media seems to get it. 99.9’s Joe Ovies attempted to enlighten a self-proclaimed journalist (and rumored friend of Gary Williams) today with the following:

RT @joeovies @sportsbybrooks we’re at the classic point where coaches were informed they weren’t “they guy”

  • I do not know if this means a deal is actually finalized with our top ‘mystery candidate’. I would tend to believe that one, or both of the following statements are relatively accurate: (1) Debbie Yow felt as though her agreement was in a strong enough position to ‘release’ all of the other candidates; (2) Debbie Yow has an acceptable ‘fallback’ candidate who has agreed to the job if her top candidate should fall through during the home stretch.
  • Again, we’ve got no inside information...(ok…maybe we have just a little inside information)…nonetheless…we would expect this thing to be wrapped up by Wednesday/Thursday of this week.

If we are wrong…we are screwed.

For some fun, you can click on our Twitter feed for a review of some twitter interaction from today.

by the looks of this he is a liar…this supposedly came out not long after VCU’s AD made the statement that Smart had turned the Pack down……

So did we not offer Smart, but have someone else and told Smart, so he decided to stay at VCU?!?!?!?!

  2. West Coaster 04/04/2011 at 7:47 PM #

    packhammer –
Just as a frame of reference, at the end of the season last year Brad Stevens signed a contract extension with Butler through the 2022-2023 season.

  3. XpatriateWolf 04/04/2011 at 7:47 PM #

My sources tell me Stevens is a real possibilty and we have already secured a back up if this doesn’t pan out. The back up is Matt Doherty. Good recruiter, has turned around a perennial loser at SMU and no one in the country who wants to beat Carolina more than this guy

Granted, my sources are just my own vivid imagination combined with the equally vivid imagination of an old friend in Dallas.

Hey, if the media can engage in wild speculation…why can’t I?

The best way for Yow to shut everyone up is to break out a home run coach. If it’s Miller or Stevens, that’s a grand slam, not just a solo shot. The suspense is killing me, but I am optimistic we’ll be a lot happier than the Missouri faithful by the end of the week.

Glad there’s some sanity here..Also glad I can make an “idiot’s list”!

The deal is done which is what I’ve expected all along…

Gary Williams to NC State! No way, I was just joking on that part!

Flying back from Houston yesterday, I sat next to person who turned out to be a Big East executive who was a former coach at a major basketball program. Before the plane’s staff told us to turn off our phones, I saw the gentleman hurriedly sent a text from his phone. I asked him what it was about and he told me it was about a basketball coaching search. Told him I was a UNC Charlotte alumni and not a big fan of basketball. However, I told him I think the whole process is interesting and would love to know a little about it. He opened up some and this is what I gathered:
These are some of the names that no one knows now but will later, hopefully, after the new coach is announced: Dr. Harry Griffin of the Roslin Institute, Harrell Brown CEG out of Spokane, WA, and Andrei K. Lugovoi.
He said that the way State is doing its search now will be the model of all future coaching searches for any BCS schools. He doesn’t necessary like it but he think this is where these things are heading. First, he said that Parker Executive Search in only one of three consulting firms that State has retained. My impression is that Parker and another unnamed firms are there only to throw out smokescreens and to keep an eye out for other smokescreens that might harm the search (counter smokescreening, if you will). Harrell Brown CEG (subsidiary of IMG) is the real search firm. They operate under extreme secrecy. If they think there is a leak any where along the process, the whole thing will be aborted immediately. But it doesn’t end there. If that was to happen, Andrei K Lugovoi is brought in to make sure that no one from the inside has compromised the process. Mr. Lugovoi is a former KGB agent defected to England 20 years ago and now working for different sports/entertainment agencies. If he finds the person who indeed started leak, he said, and I paraphrase, we will never hear or see that person again…
The reason why no one has seen Dr. Yow in person or heard from her is simple, he said, because she is not here with us per se. All interviews are conducted in the air, fifty-seven thousand plus feet high. Dr. Woodson’s dad used to work for the US Air Force. He was one of the commanders of Operation Looking Glass. If you are not familiar with OLG, please look it up. He is retired now but still is very connected. Dr. Woodson Sr. made arrangements to have Dr Yow to do all her interviews on the planes with different OLG squadrons, tens of thousands of feet up in the atmosphere. Now you know why we haven’t heard a thing from her. She is out reach to all bloggers, twitterers, facebookers, and even colleagues and family members. If we can’t get one of the prospects on our original list to sign on, the gentleman said, do not despair. The back up plan is almost better. The reason we don’t want to use it unless all options are exhausted is we don’t want to ruin the future of college athletics. But since the Butch Davises and the Jim Tressels of the world have already done so, he told me, why not NC State? The plan is, and this is where Dr. Harry Griffin comes in, to clone a coach. If you are not familiar with Dr. Griffin and the Roslin Institute, you should wiki or google them. They have attained the DNA’s of both K and Roy from the black market. They allegedly got K’s DNA from his days at army through some sort of a minor cannon accident. They bought Roy’s DNA from his family doctor back in western NC when Roy cut himself trying to open a bottle of Coke with his teeth as a boy. The plan is to clone only K and Roy characteristics but not their looks. Cloning their looks, the gentleman told me, will present mass confusion to ACC referees as well as Dick Vitale. Then they will fuse these characteristics together and planted in a body of a supposedly mid-major coach. This coach’s name is Kayoni A. Royberts (K and Roy). Royberts is not actually a mid-major coach at all, his real name is Vlavad Keirenko. He is a truck driver from the Ukraine kidnapped and sold to us at a low communist price by Kim Jong Il, North Korean’s dear leader.
So if it comes down to a no name mid-major coach, please don’t lose your mind. We get ourselves a great one no matter what. Of course, all these information could be just rumors or speculations come from one person. So take it for whatever it is worth. But with the absurdity of today’s college athletics, the truth sometimes does sound stranger than fiction.

My source says Smart was interviewed and offered. No one else (Marshall/Cronin) was offered, only Smart.

  8. cjt 04/04/2011 at 7:57 PM #

Realistically, it is extremely worrisome that DY has allowed today to happen without announcing a hire. To me, this means that we do not have someone else lined up. These guys (smart, cronin, marshall) were really saying “no thanks” and we have taken another beating in the press. I am with all of you in hoping DY has a plan to justify this but after today and the continued “silence”. I am not confident that this ends well.

  9. MattN 04/04/2011 at 7:57 PM #

BTW, this is going be either a phenomenal out-of-nowhere hire, or the biggest clusterf@#k of a search ever, far eclipsing Fowler’s.

If I had to bet, I’d go clusterf@#k….

  10. goalielax 04/04/2011 at 7:59 PM #

speaking of twitter, can anyone explain to me why the SFN twitter is blocked for me?

  11. crackdog 04/04/2011 at 8:01 PM #

I’m not sure Yow is capable of hiring an NBA coach with a career losing record, no college degree, and no college coaching experience. It would take something worse that that, to eclipse Fowler’s bungle- in case you forgot.

  12. James 04/04/2011 at 8:02 PM #

The key fact for me is whether Smart was actually offered the NCSU job. Was he offered or not?

  13. btownwolfpack 04/04/2011 at 8:05 PM #

Most likely scenario is that the public outing of the Smart offer drove the others off. Nobody wants to be second fiddle (or fifth depending on how you count)…particularly to a kid with a short resume.

  14. DCNCSUfan 04/04/2011 at 8:06 PM #

I agree with cjt… if an announcement does not come tomorrow it looks like Monte Towe will be our coach next year.

  15. Wufpacker 04/04/2011 at 8:06 PM #

@1998, you started on the mistaken premise that everyone thought DY could walk on water. All anyone who supports her has said is wait until it’s over and then analyze the hire and how we ended up there.

Since nothing has changed on that front, the only people “coming over to your side” are the nutjobs that thought she could walk on water to begin with.

  16. WufPup2810 04/04/2011 at 8:07 PM #

I am with u James….if Smart was offered and turned us down, Packnation is in a lot of trouble right now and I bet Yow is stressing. Just wish SOMEONE/ANYONE from the search committee wld come out and speak. I think we, as fans, who have stood by this program year after year of embarrassment, deserve it.

  17. James 04/04/2011 at 8:12 PM #

Agreed, pup. I don’t see the rationale with letting VCU’s AD claim Smart “turned us down,” allowing the media to have a field day with it. If we didn’t make an offer, why not correct the misperception? Unless, as some are alluding to, the hire will speak for itself and we are letting Smart save face? I’m hoping that’s true.

  18. PoppaJohn 04/04/2011 at 8:12 PM #

    Aaaarrrggghhhhh!!!!!

  19. bionicdoug 04/04/2011 at 8:13 PM #

We had to be waiting on Smart. Why would we wait this long if there was some “mystery super coach” that DY is going to pull out of nowhere? We either need to go out on a limb and hire some major program assistant like Wojo or if we don’t want to be risky let’s just hire Oliver Purnell and call it a day. The guy proved he could coach and recruit in the ACC. I don’t see what upside the State job has for a name coach. Stevens is proving you can be a national player without being in a power conference job so unless someone wants to take a lot of money to risk having us ruin his career I don’t see what the appeal is.

  20. Graywolf1 04/04/2011 at 8:15 PM #

VCU’s AD might be correct, however remember he is a UNC grad and might love embarrassing NC State.

Trust DY and hopefully we will be happy in 24-48 hours. I and hopeful our next coach takes Gary Williams behind the woodshed next year.

  21. IamGumbyDammit 04/04/2011 at 8:17 PM #

Dear Chicken Little whiney b****es, do us all a favor and STFU!!!! Even if you ARE by some remote chance correct, no one wants or needs to hear it. This insufferable pessimism makes me seriously question your loyalty to the ‘Pack.

  23. Graywolf1 04/04/2011 at 8:19 PM #

Heck at this point I would jump for joy if she got Brownell….We all know he can coach!

Whatever happens the new coach has my support…

  24. BJD95 04/04/2011 at 8:21 PM #

Sounds like Kingston did refute it – in a pitch perfect, non-defensive manner.

The hire shall speak for itself. Res ipsa loquitor.

I’d like to know how many times I’ve read “Just wait another 24-48 hours” in the past 2 weeks.
