TBJ: Red seats are a-coming…

What better time for a little enhancement to the RBC Center then right when we get a new basketball coach?

Link to Triangle Business Journal

Die-hard North Carolina State University basketball fans who never liked the “red” color of the seats at the RBC Center can now rejoice. The Centennial Authority plans to spend $1.6 million to replace the seats in the arena during the off-season.

Longtime followers of the RBC Center will remember that the color of the seats caused quite a brouhaha when the facility first opened. Seems that their dark red – or wine red – color wasn’t exactly what was expected among those who bleed that bright Wolfpack red.

The job of picking the color of the seats this time around primarily will fall to authority member Michael Weeks, who heads up the construction committee, in consultation with NCSU Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director David Horning.

The Centennial Authority is the landlord of the RBC Center, where the Wolfpack basketball team and the Carolina Hurricanes hockey club play their home games

Our younger readers won’t remember some of the unnecessary struggles that came along with the original construction of the arena that was followed by the selection of seats that did not conform to NC State University’s color official color scheme.

Debbie Yow has already begun a program to ‘State-ize’ the RBC Center for NC State home games. Surrounding the court with seats that are the actual school colors will be a huge step in the right direction.

While we are talking about issues surrounding playing at home…you can click here for some work just done by ESPN regarding home field advantage on the football field.

For the record, it says State has the 10th worst home field advantage, based on the metrics they are using in their calculations. Then again, it says Ohio State has the 8th worst home field advantage.

Best home field advantage – Boise State…duh. followed by Baylor, Hawaii, Toledo, and Indiana. I need to look at this guy’s numbers.

Worst home field advantage – Western Kentucky, New Mexico, and Florida International.

Best road advantage – Northwestern, Bowling Green, and Tulane. Seriously?

Worst road advantage – New Mexico State, Iona, and SMU.

Interesting findings. I would like to look at some of the guys numbers to see how he came up with the results.

Re: Red seats – GREAT! Go Pack!

While they are looking at the red seats they should look at putting additional seats, closer together, smaller if necessary on the area where the students are on the floor area. That area could be much denser populated. It does not look good on TV, it could stand some creative seating arrangement changes. I know that there are fire code rules to follow, but if they can get away with it at Cameron we should be able to work on ours a little.

You can’t see the color of a filled seat.

Save money – don’t bother with seats in the student sections – they should be on their feet the whole time anyway 😉

Indiana?!?!? What a joke. I live in Bloomington and you can sit anywhere you want in that stadium for any game that isn’t against Ohio State…and that isn’t because the IU fans turned out to see their team get a beating. I’ll take C-F any day, and so will Tom O.

Fix the Seats, they were delivered the wrong color when first ordered. The company screwed up and basicially said they couldn’t afford to fix them. Glad to see this happening.

More important than the color of the seats is where the banners are hanging. Our NCAA champ 4 and 83 banners are pinned against the back wall while bullshat NHL flags are flying midcourt. Les get some NCSU priority for the banners please !

    Ok,

How about a spot light on the Nation Championship Banners. A NC State store and not just a counter in the lobby. How about changing the cups in the building. Why not have one for the Pack, one for the Hurricanes, and a general cup for the other events. They charge enough to do this. How about a real pregame highlight reel that starts 30 minutes before game time using old footage and some interviews. Similar to what they do for hockey. It might help get people in the building sooner.

I was happy when they upgraded the lighting a couple of years ago. Let me shoot games at quicker speeds and lower ASA.

I think the photography area may be a little more crowded this coming season.

Alright, I’ve been saving this up …

Whenever State hoops is talked about the discussion eventually comes around to the fans. The rabid fans who ran off Sendek. The lunatic fringe. The impatient fanbase that got rid of Sid. Gottfied was asked about us in his first presser. Yow talked about us in her press conf.

HOW ABOUT HONORING US, THE FANS??? Coaches, players and ADs come and go, but we are there every stinking night, year after year, living and dying each game over our teams.

Put up a ‘6th Man’ jersey. Better yet, put a picture of a ‘6th man’ jersey on the seats.

WE DESERVE IT!!! We are the best fans in the country!!!

Are we getting rid of those nasty ass, cheap, temporary “NC State University” plastic banners that adorn the wall between the students and the RTP execs?

  12. legacyman 04/08/2011 at 12:46 PM #

We need to get some soft drink cups with NC State logos as we once had.

Here’s hoping that we don’t choose Wolfpack Red end up with pink this time!

    70wolf….

THANK YOU!!! This is what I’ve been screaming for years!!
Starting inside out…US flag, NC flag, NCSU & Hurricanes flags..Champ banners, retired jerseys, THEN line the outside with other NHL teams. Seems like a no-brainer

re: drink cups – I designed the cups that were sold starting in the fall of ’83. I still have a couple of them. I didn’t see the finished product until the first football game of the season. It was pretty cool to see thousands of them in the stands…

As I recall, Chancellor Fox expressed her strong displeasure with the color of the seats. I think she (and others) decided that there was nothing that could be done to correct the error from a practical standpoint. Also, as I recall, this wasn’t the fault of NCSU–it was the architect or one of the contractors, or a combination, that screwed up what the school wanted. Maybe she got some sort of a monetary concession from the party(ies) responsible, I just don’t remember.

On the same subject, I wish that all fans would be asked to participate in a poll, study or whatever it would be termed, that would gather comments about what we believe needs to be done at the various venues (especially CF and RBC) to improve the experience at them. The fans would also be encouraged to state what they liked about the venues and therefor did not wish to change. I have some ideas but have not done much to let those in power be aware of them. It seems to me that a good manager, owner or whatever would seek out these comments and not just wait on the unsolicited complaints of a relatively small portion of the fans. For example, there are a few things at the RBC that annoy me and sometimes are the “straw” that determines whether I attend a game or not, although for the past __ years there have been other factors that have sometimes kept me away!

Just win some games. Everything else is just noise at this point.

ncst8zr1, send your ideas via here:

    They will consider them.

ncst8zr1 Seems Robinson told me the company screwed up the color, they didn’t bother to identify the color they was told to be Wolfpack Red. That is what I remember being told, but I may not remember correctly given the amount of drinks consumed at Sullivan’s Island when talking with Les.

What does it mater what color the seats are if the stands are filled with fans no one will see the seat color. Winning will solve a good deal of problems. I know in watching games this year you could pick out the color of the seats because so many were not filled!

  21. wncpack93 04/08/2011 at 4:37 PM #

You know where we always had a big home advantage and the seats were the right shade of RED? Hopefully coach will want a game or two over at State’s REAL bball arena!!!! Long Live Reynolds!!!!!!

  22. Wufpacker 04/08/2011 at 5:11 PM #

What I had always heard was that it was the fault of the company that actually manufactured the seats. Because it was such a large custom order they couldn’t afford to just replace them all on the spot. I never heard what the company’s “concessions” to make up for the mistake were (or if there even really were any).

Honestly, I’ve never really been bothered by the seat color and have alwasy just been happy to have comfortable seats. The seats in Reynolds, no matter where you sat or how much you paid the WPC every year, weren’t exactly comfy.

I actually think for the arena that the darker red seats are pretty sharp, and as someone mentioned previously, they don’t show on TV as long as there are asses in the seats. Also, the seats in Reynolds weren’t the exact correct “Wolfpack Red” color either, though they were admittedly closer.

As far as the banners, I have to agree with what Khan said. As long as the product on the floor is what it should be, I don’t spend much time looking at the rafters.

Also, I sometimes wonder if the dissatisfaction with the arrangement of banners in general (NCSU vs.’Canes) doesn’t have as much to do with the old argument that NCSU shouldn’t have to share an arena with a pro sports franchise. IIRC, the national championship banners were displayed on the far, far wall of the endzone in Reynolds just as they are now, and even much more poorly lit at the time.

    How difficult is:

And FWIW, I did not major in engineering, design or CS at NCSU.

Our banners are so ancient, they might as well be tucked away in the corner.

Our arena is way too big for us, there will always be seats without asses.
