Pack Football’s Real Area of Concern – WR

Nothing’s sure to drum up emotions and post counts quite like the topics of replacing last year’s star performers – Russell Wilson and Nate Irving. That said, I think the real burning issue for 2011 (and 2012 – comprising the best two year window for NC State to land that long-awaited conference title) involves the WR corps. The N&O profiled one candidate to step up (Tobais Palmer – yes, apparently that is the correct spelling) here.

Hopefully, Palmer really is ready to step up. Because losing Owen Spencer and Jarvis Williams causes me more concern than losing Wilson and Irving. The only returning options who have logged significant playing time have been either role player/blocking types (like Stephen Howard, Jay Smith, and Quinton Payton) or come with serious question marks (TJ Graham’s questionable route-running and even more dicey hands). George Bryan returns for his senior year, and should be a great security blanket for Mike Glennon. But unless State can demonstrate the ability to spread and stretch the field, opposing pass rushes can tee off on the less elusive and experienced Glennon, and/or devote more resources to shutting down Mustafa Greene.

Other than that, I’m quite excited about what I hear and expect about the defense, returning loads of depth and entering their second year under the effective Archer/Tenuta leadership combination. As I’ve trumpeted frequently, you can also expect to see a more prototypical Tom O’Brien offensive line – especially in 2011 and 2012. And what Pack fan isn’t excited about Mooooooose, a fan favorite and dynamic wrecking ball type? Mike Glennon won’t be asked, or need to, win games by himself. Much as Russell Wilson was exactly what we’ve needed the past three seasons, I feel there’s a very good chance that Mike Glennon is exactly what we need now. He will be in a good position to succeed…as long as we get decent WR play.

And that, my friends, is the real open question for 2011 and 2012. God knows this fanbase needs a really special football season, and sooner rather than later.

This is the perfect season/schedule to break in a new QB.

  2. Wufpacker 04/20/2011 at 1:07 PM #

Except for that possible nagging concern BJD just talked about re: receiving personnel.

  3. VaWolf82 04/20/2011 at 1:16 PM #

I am not nearly as optimistic as BJD, but State’s schedule breaks down rather favorably this year with UMD, UNC, and Clemson at home. I always feel that this slate is better than the one with BC, FSU, and WF at home.

The cross-divisonal games are also favorable this year with GT at home and UVA on the road.

Much like the post-Rivers era, I’ll judge Glennon once I see him in games. Until then, most projections would be better defined as “hope”.

Totally agree. I expect much improved run game and blocking up front, which should ease Glennon’s development.

Upside of our area of concern is you’d much rather have confidence in your QB & OL w/ questions about the WRs than vice versa. WRs generally tend to be a dime a dozen, so it would almost be surprising to not see one step up and shine this year.

  5. BJD95 04/20/2011 at 1:57 PM #

This is definitely a better “9-10 win” schedule. But it’s very tough to get to the ACC title game when you have the road trip to Tallahassee.

And fuuuuuuuuuuuck, do I ever want us to get there.

You touched on Bryan being a security blanket, but don’t forget about the backs as well. Moose demonstrated great pass-catching skills last year, and Washington is reliable as well. I think Graham will be his usual self (in other words, I don’t expect him to be the one to step up with his play) so they’ll have to rely on some of the younger/inexperienced guys to break out.

Our WR situation kind of reminds me of TOB’s teams at BC. Gunnel was good but not many other notable guys, that I can recall at least. Graham MAY be able to stretch the field some, but I think we may have to rely on a shorter passing game – get it to some guys and let them make plays in the open field.

Besides the runback at UNX last year (and how glorious that was!!!), I have been a big “hater” on TJ Graham. I dont feel confident with him catching punts and his hands as a receiver are pretty bad. I got a lot of crap at the UNX game about “my boy” TJ and how much i bad mouth him. But realisitcally, if someone can run at the speed of light lets say, but cant make someone miss or break a tackle…the speed doesnt really factor in. Here’s to hoping he has improved and that we have another Earl Wofle show up but on Offense.
p.s. dont get me started on how much i LOVE LOVE LOVE Mr. Wolfe….playmaker, pure and simple.

I agree with concerns at WR, mainly due to SHS (Stone Hands Syndrome) but:

“…losing Owen Spencer and Jarvis Williams causes me more concern than losing Wilson and Irving.”

I can’t understand that at all.

I can’t understand that either. Correct me if I am wrong we spread the ball a lot last year. At least 12 different people caught TD passes last year. 12 may be too high but I remember it being a large number. I think the receivers will be fine. Howard made some nice plays last year. Don’t forget we have the best tight end in the ACC coming back.

There are two phrases you won’t often hear in life. The first one is “France wins”, and the second one is “I am not nearly as optimistic as BJD”. In this case, I am as optimistic as BJD, and share his feeling that the WR position is the one that could make or break this team. Our offensive line should be somewhere between okay and good, but not good enough to be a one dimensional running team. Palmer looks promising, but he’s small. I have little faith in TJ, but maybe he will spend the summer learning how to catch the ball, and hang on to it once he’s got it. If someone does emerge as legitimate receiving threat, we could be very, very good.

I can’t get the Hakeen Nicks leaving effect out of my mind when looking at this team.

It was such an obvious alarm bell going off when you looked at how much offense those receivers produced before they left. The defense was the only reason they got to a winning record.

Listening to TOB’s interview after the spring game, he seems to think that the issues are fixable issues and nothing especially alarming. He mentioned that it was more of a catching the ball vs bad throws.

    We shall see.

Any chance Flowers would be able to contribute right away? Or is he more likely to redshirt?

  13. rtpack24 04/20/2011 at 4:07 PM #

Russell Wilson is off to a slow start. Hitting .152 with the Asheville Tourists. Not exactly burning it up at that level when you are not even hitting your weight. By next fall we might have the best back-up QB in the country.

  14. tjfoose1 04/20/2011 at 4:11 PM #

“Much like the post-Rivers era, I’ll judge Glennon once I see him in games. Until then, most projections would be better defined as “hope”.”

    Ditto.

“Russell Wilson is off to a slow start. Hitting .152 with the Asheville Tourists.”

I see that as even more reason for Wilson to focus on his profession, not less.

  16. Wolfy__79 04/20/2011 at 4:30 PM #

russell needed to be in spring camp last year and also this year to really grow as a qb. i agree with foose that he needs to focus on baseball.. his stock is much higher in that right now even with a .152! we had a good year last year… but it would have been arguably much better with him involved more in the offseason.

    677 Cmp, 1270 Att, 10579 Yds, 67 TD
Career Rushing: 288 Att, 738 Yds, 2.6 Avg

Which set of statistics is Doug Flutie and which is Russell Wilson’s?

The second set is RW’s! Only three years worth too. Any of you who think we are better off without him or his shot is in baseball are smoking something! Not saying he is coming back but this attitude that its ok if he doesn’t come back. We will be ok with out him. BS!

  18. BJD95 04/20/2011 at 4:57 PM #

My “level of concern” comment should not be viewed as denigrating the ability or contributions of Wilson and Irving. They were and remain true “Wolfpack Badasses.” But I feel good about Glennon after having 3 years of Bible’s instruction and maturity, and the defense as a whole being ready to step up.

Lots of guys caught balls last year because of how Spencer spread the field (they were often wide-assed open). And when we needed a tough catch in a crucial situation, it was almost always JW. I worry about replacing those factors in the offense.

I predict we will place at least 2, and perhaps 3 OL on the first or second team all-ACC.

  19. BJD95 04/20/2011 at 4:59 PM #

Russell Wilson needed to carry the team in the past. Now, the other pieces on the two deep are much, much stronger.

    Except at WR.

  20. Classof89 04/20/2011 at 5:19 PM #

Other than Palmer (and he was a running back in HS, wasn’t he?), we’ve pretty much struck out under TOB with the top WRs coming out of NC the last few years. How do we stand with the top WRs in next year’s recruiting class?

  21. scotchzombie 04/20/2011 at 5:32 PM #

I too worry about the passing game. Bryan has been and will be solid, but the WRs are indeed a very big question mark. Graham, God love him, had me grimacing during the Spring Game. And while I have high hopes for Glennon, I can’t say I’ve been blown away by any of his (albeit limited) appearances to-date. However, I think we’ll see some strong play on defense and an improved OL and running game.

  22. choppack1 04/20/2011 at 6:25 PM #

I actually think our receivers will surprise some people. I think they are capable…I’d really like to see Graham step up – if he does – that really opens up this position.

  23. Wolfy__79 04/20/2011 at 6:37 PM #

wr’s have been disappointing for the past few seasons.. they have dropped crucial passes again and again.. which unfortunately isn’t limited to any one wr in particular. jw seemed to always go after the ball more and scored b/c of it..i will miss him for sure.

i can’t ever argue that we are better off w/out RW!! however, for him to come back… i’d like to see him putting in the same time that the rest of the team does.. there are alot of areas that he could be working on.

glennon has yet to impress.. he says it himself that he needs more real time experience.. i’m thankful for our schedule this season.. starting off so easily.

  24. graywolf 04/20/2011 at 7:29 PM #

If you can’t throw the ball in modern football you are in big trouble. I hope you are wrong but i have the same fears that we may be short on talent at wide out.

  25. wppride 04/20/2011 at 7:53 PM #

i think we will be ok in wr department. Obviously some guys need to step up but i think we have talent and guys capable of making big plays. Spencer and J5 had problems early on but they turned into solid and dependable recievers.

i dont think anyone thinks we will be better off w/o RW, but the wolfpack chapter is closed and TOB, as well as the program, had to move forward and hand over the reigns to Glennon. We cant depend on someone who isnt here. Given the situation, its Glennon’s time and rightfully so. I agree with TOB 100%.
