Lutz to join BB staff

Former Charlotte 49ers coach Bobby Lutz will join Mark Gottfried’s staff at N.C. State.

Lutz gives the new Wolfpack basketball coach two assistants with connections to the state, as well as head-coaching experience.

Longer article from Hickory Daily Record

It’s not often that the HDR has a longer article than the CO on an ACC topic. But Lutz was a player at Bandy’s High School which is in the same county as Hickory.

i also am a fan of MG saying repeatedly that our current players are his number one priority!! i think that will translate into huge recruiting plusses.. and i read where one or two of his bama players are stepping up and saying that he’s a good coach.. a players coach. i like that.. i think that will help as well!!

    From gopack.com :

“One thing about coach Gottfried, he is a players coach. He took a personal interest in all of us both on and off the court. He took us in as family, and put us in a position to succeed. This is a great hire for NC State, they got a great coach and a great recruiter. He has the ability to bring in top talent, and to get players to the next level. He had a great track record at Alabama, and got the most out of all of us.”

Mo Williams – L.A. Clippers, former Alabama guard 2002-03 for Gottfried

“Mark is totally prepared for this job. He did a super job at Alabama leading that squad to multiple NCAA appearances in a very good conference. Mark is ready to lead the Wolfpack in the ACC.”

    Dick Vitale – ESPN

“I thought Mark was very good while working for ESPN, but I knew he had that burning desire to coach. I think NC State hired a good one. He has coached at a very high level. He has been around some high level basketball game and high level programs. He’ll jump into this job with all the confidence in the world to become winners.”

Lorenzo Romar – Head Coach of Washington Huskies, worked with Gottfried as assistant coaches at UCLA from 1992-95.

“Mark Gottfried’s winning track record, coaching acumen and passion for teaching makes him an ideal fit to lead the Wolfpack basketball program back to national prominence.”
Steve Lavin – Head coach of the St. John’s Red Storm, worked with Gottfried as assistant coached at UCLA from 1992-95

Not bad at all. During the melt down that ended with the hiring of Sid, Lutz was looking like a good candidate for the HC here last time.

So what do these hires say about our new head coach? Does it say more about him or are we just able to offer more money than others schools or do they just like the Wolfpack? lol

Someone asked earlier about our recruiting prospects. I know there are periods where recruiting is not allowed. Are the new coaches allowed to contact our prospects, or do they have to wait for the next allowed recruiting period? If so, how long do they have to wait?

    Wolfy_79,

As an old time project manager and also one who has had to come in and take over a situation that needed “improving”, I agree with your logic. The FIRST priority is to focus and RETAIN the existing team. They have the talent, thanks to Sidney and Company’s recruiting and we need to keep that momentum going.

The second is to hire a couple of GREAT assistants and begin to assemble a staff that hit the ground running. This is a highly critical time in the recruiting process. We need to LOCK IN our incoming/committed recruits and also fill out the roster with some really neat “additions”.

The above is 2A…..and 2B is to get out and RECRUIT and keep the talent pool filled.

Next is to prepare an off season plan to beef up or improve on the conditioning, skill sets, academic (if needed), etc. These priorities and organization come from the STAFF…..so you need good solid hires.

NOW, the good OLE’ N&O did some digging on Thursday….but chose NOT to publish it until Saturday where they can get more “coverage”. Jim Harrick is probably a great coach….but I do NOT see his future at NCSU. He may have learned from his TWO unfortunate transgressions that lead to NCAA Action and like the reformed alcoholic, will never touch the devil’s cup again. BUT, he needs to prove that at another school.

I have ranted and roared about the jealousy of the faculty and why they crucified Jimmy V. I have also publicly ridiculed Dr. Larry Monteith for his alleged witch hunt and the unrealistic self imposed sanctions that NCSU imposed.

However, if we want to revive all the antagonism and the venom and the division from the Jimmy V “persecution”….then hiring Jim Harrick would be about the BEST way to do it.

Let Jim Harrick ply his trade and prove his worthiness at another institution….If we found out that Roy (you know, old Two Ringer) was going to hire Harrick after the unfortunate “TUTORGATE” situation at UNC, this board would light up like a Saturn Rocket. We would call it John Blake, Part Deux….the Basketball Saga.

We do NOT need THAT type of negative press. I urge ALL Wolfpackers who feel this way to email Debbie You and Randy Woodson to prevent a MAJOR PR blunder.

I know that Jim, probably feels that NCSU owes him one….since he was the coach at Pepperdine in 1983 and had us by 6 points (when the 3 point shot did not exist) and it was under a minute.

BUT, that debt can NOT be paid now.

    My thoughts….

    Adventuroo:

Have you not learned anything from the past few years? Cheating is okay, as long as no dead hookers are involved, you will only get a slap on the wrist.

I’m not proposing we hire a scum bag cheater (we came close in 2005), but the view I had from the high horse was not as enjoyable as I thought it would be. The stigma Harrick brings is a cost. Is it outweighed by the considerable talent he brings as an ASSISTANT? This is not so black and white.

I have mixed emotions, especially since UGA apparently pulled a NC State and imposed draconian sanctions for what is now viewed as common practice (i.e. accepting money from coaches and selling memorabilia).

i do not care for anyone with baggage like that coming to nc state! we’ve been down that road for far too long. we’ve been living with our mistakes for over twenty years. let’s move on from that!

from everything i’ve seen, MG doesn’t have any past issues with violations right? so why would he start now with the biggest job he’s ever had? i doubt we see anything like this but if we do i have to also trust the man as he said he would do everything “within the rules..” the other day.

from what i read from the n&o article.. he said something to the effect that timing isn’t good anyway.. so i don’t see any need to look any further.

i would like to see a dino or herb type assistant to finish things up. someone with some mad science to mix it up. all in all, i’m very pleased with this weeks happenings!! PACK!

The Situation? So the Pack will be using the GTL training system…

Somebody expressed concern over strength & conditioning. If I’m not mistaken, Debbie Yow herself spoke of a need for overhaul in that department. If I’m right about that, I think we need not worry that those wishes will be carried out by Gottfried & staff.

I noted in another post, Gottfried has had the most prior success of any coach we have EVER hired. Coupled with his strong start on the staff, I am growing more optimistic by the day.

…Looking forward to knowing the future status of our current players and recruits!

Damn Gald to Have Bobby Lutz, I thought Charlotte made a mistake replacing him. He has a good eye for talent and is a great coach. What an excellent hire!

    Wolfy_79,

I don’t know what past mistakes we have been living with for the past 20 years other than this:
An engineering dean thought a coach was getting too popular and started a witch hunt (and using a friendly liberal media from another school) to bring him down while gaining power for the dean and academics who failed to make the connection between big time successful programs and contribuitons/student/parent interest in the school.

The mistake we made was letting some jealous administration personnel ruin an athletic department while hurting the overall creditibility of the school.

Do I want Jim Harrick … hell no. Do I want an administration that supports the new coach and the program. Hell yes. Until that happens we will never been successful.

  13. CrackerPacker 04/09/2011 at 7:45 PM #

Welcome Bobby Lutz. Great addition to the staff. So is Dino next? Jim Harrick lends an ear but isn’t coming as of yet. Which from what I’ve heard isn’t to much of a lost. I think he’s just helping coach Gott with advice on transition and asstistant hires. Now we need someone who would teach great defense and rebounding.

From what I’ve read I think the current players are gonna stay. Hope thats true. Tyler Harris is going to stay committed. Read that Early was visiting WOG Thursday. Maybe Uchebo will stay committed and qualify. While he’s there maybe he could convince Bishop Daniels to come, since Miami(he was committed to) is looking a new coach, if Raymond don’t. Heard he has a high motor. That would sure up the SG’s. Maybe move CJ to the 3 if it fits. Tyler Lewis is going to stay committed also. Now if Cully Payne transfers that would give us a good back-up at PG. Hopefully that wouldn’t upset Harrow cause we do need a back-up. If everythings true that would sure up all the players, a load off my mind.

PS: Something I had posted earlier that was suitible for this thread.

was jimmy v the same coach with an espn gig and delegating almost all practice responsibilities to the assistant staff?

who was in charge of the athletic dept in the eighties?

  15. BladenWolf 04/11/2011 at 11:25 AM #

Lutz is an excellent hire. The karma change and Power Shift continues. Is the Rob Moxley hire official?

Night and day difference from our last experience.

    Wolfy,

A quote from John Feinstein: “Twenty years later I think it is fair to say that State still hasn’t recovered from that episode.”

The coaching community has a long memory. I also don’t get your point. Are you saying that having a ESPN gig and delegating practice responsibility to assistant are NCAA violations? BTW when you read the summary below think of John Calipari. Everyone seemed to want him to be our coach yet he is guilty of the only thing Valvano was found guilty of which is recruiting players who need academic exceptions.

Here is an fact filled summary of the episode:

In 1990, accusations of rules violations surfaced in the book Personal Fouls by Peter Golenbock. These accusations centered mostly around high school All-American Chris Washburn, who only managed a 470 out of 1600 on his SAT (with 400 being the starting score).[3] A 1989 NCAA investigation cleared Valvano, but found that players sold shoes and game tickets. As a result, NC State placed its basketball program on probation for two years (the maximum) and was banned from participating in the 1990 NCAA tournament. The state-appointed Poole Commission issued a 32-page report that concluded that there were no major violations of NCAA regulations, and that Valvano and his staff’s inadequate oversight of players’ academic progress violated “the spirit, not the letter of the law.” After this report, Valvano was forced to resign as the school’s athletic director in October 1989. He remained as basketball coach through the 1989–1990 season. Under subsequent pressure from the school’s faculty and new Chancellor, Valvano negotiated a settlement with NC State and resigned as basketball coach on April 7, 1990. Six separate entities investigated Valvano and the NC State basketball program including the NC State Faculty Senate, the North Carolina Attorney General, the University of North Carolina Board of Governors, the NC State Board of Trustees, and the NCAA. None of them found any recruiting or financial improprieties. However, a school investigation did reveal that Valvano’s student athletes did not perform well in the classroom, as only 11 of the players that he coached prior to 1988 had maintained an average of C or better.[4] This was perhaps due to his persistence in recruiting students deemed to be “academic exceptions.”

ancsu87, what was your source for all that info on Valvano and NC State?

    That was good reading.
