Lutz is a GREAT hire. He comes from Catawba County, my home and of course, the reverred Ricky Barnes. Lutz (pronounced LOUtz….now LUT as in NUT Z) played for my arch rival school in lower Catawba County. He is a great guy, from a great area of course.

Mark is doing a great job. I have expressed my opinion on the HIRING of Jim Harrick….and I do NOT believe it would be in the best interest of the school or the program. It would open up some sores from the St. Monteith area and provide those that are now agahast that BB is finally being REVIVED with some ammunition so they could take swipes at it. I also, and call me paranoid….I’ve been called worse by better…..beleive that if Harrick was added that SOME members of the faculty would “raise” the bar for our players and that there would be scholastic repercussions…..these are petty and insecure folks that we are dealing with. They do NOT, at least for the present, have any power nor the numbers, but give them a rallying cry and they will crawl out from under their rocks and torment our BB players in the classroom.

THEN, if someone DOTH protest, who would you believe….the straight arrow faculty or those slackard BB players that have a know NCAA predator for an assistant coach.

IF you feel strongly about this….email the folks in Holliday Hall….they WILL listen..

I did NOT dispute the fact that Jim Harrick is probably a fine Basketball Coach…but his record would put an unnecessary blemish on the start of a new program.

Welcome Bobby, even if you did play for Bandy’s High….I can’t wait to tease him and show him my high school class ring. Old rivalries are great…..and grow in stature every year.

Actually, Lowe’s assistants would have been fine. 2 of the 3 had extensive HC experience – and the other had long stints as an assistant.

The problem was that neither, Lowe, Towe or Strickland had much success at all as a HC. I’ll put it this way, Lutz was much more successful as HC than all 3 of those guys.

As for the skills they bring – there was a very telling quote in the article posted yesterday about Gottfried’s last few years at ‘Bama. His “defensive coach” left to spend more time w/ his wife – and not so coincidentally, his record went down the toilet. I also think that Early may have left around this time too.

So, to me – the “concerns” about current staff remain as follows:
    *ability to coach Defense
*ability to get our guys into good shape.

Perhaps the ability to keep these assistants for more than a year or two might be very critical. Lutz will always be looking and I imagine the same for Early but that is usually the case for assistants…most of them would like to be head man and get the big bucks. Who could blame them. Now if you develop a very successful program and well pay your assistants then they might stay longer.

legacy – that’s a good point – but of more importance will be his ability to find coaches who can coach up D, get our guys in shape and follow the rules.

You’ve got to think that Gottfried has learnded something from his downfall foloowed by his “break”. I’m hoping he’s learned that is defense is really, really important.
