Lutz hired…Gottfried pulling together stellar staff

It is now official…former UNC-Charlotte head coach, Bobby Lutz has joined the NC State Basketball staff.

Full article here.

Lutz won a school-record 218 games in 12 seasons for the 49ers, with five trips to the NCAA tournament. Lutz, 53, was forced out at his alma mater in 2010 and spent this past season as an assistant at Iowa State.

thats a good start. any word on Gaudio or Moxley? I have heard some on here say we wont get both Lutz and Gaudio but my thought is, we are saving enough on the HC salary we ought to be able to afford Gaudio and Lutz.

Moxley would be nice as well.

Our good fortune at getting Lutz (and Early too, for that matter) on this staff cannot be overstated.

I have heard from some other coaches we are in picture for Jeff Battle from Wake. If Gottfried gets him it shows he can certainly recruit coaches. Battle is thought very highly of by his peers.

I’ve been an APP fan ever since I was a freshman here but our basketball is about as good as Busch Light we drink. Gottfried has brought in a great recruiter in Early and now an ast that had proved his worth in a a strong mid major conference with 5 trips to the dance!!!! I don’t know how you can’t be excited for what could be. GO PACK!!!!

Love this staff so far. This would be a dream team of a staff if Jim Harrick came aboard.

^Harrick? really? you think that is good for the program based on his issues? seems we are asking for trouble if we get Harrick. I’d rather see Gaudio Moxley or Battle.

who knows if one “bad apple” would spoil the bunch? another wait and see. i don’t think he’s thinking of joining based on his comments.. sounds more like a mentor role with MG getting things set up. i too would much rather have gaudio moxley or battle.

“forced out at his alma mater” seems to be becoming our coaching staff’s byline. I’m not complaining, there are lots of reasons that coaches get dismissed or replaced, it’s just worth noting.

Take any one member of this staff and and you could argue that their resume is better than the combined resume of our previous staff. Just saying…

I think we still need to add a real defensive specialist to the staff.

Some people are just better at following than being the lead dog, er wolf in this case.

I am not bothered that Lutz and Gottfried were “forced out”. I think they both have coaching talent. Time will tell what will happen, but I do think we are collecting a good group of coaches.

Great hire. Love his experience and his ties to the area. I’d like to think that would help him hit the ground running recruiting.

Proof is in the pudding though. I’ll wait to see what is delivered in Nov. and how that product progresses through to March.

Look at these hires objectively compared to the hires five years ago. Back then, LF tried to cover up his awful search process by hiring the two point guards from our national championship teams, counting on emotion to supercede fans’ concerns about lack of coaching experience and lack of prior success. This time, I have had a hard time getting fired up emotionally but there is really no doubt that objectively, this is a good staff.

By the way, I don’t even want Harrick on Gottfried’s speed dial.

Lutz is a great hire. Is the Rob Moxley hire official? This is developing into a very very good coaching staff.

I hope the players are taking note.

I wonder if there is enough “room” for another coach the likes of Gaudio. I’d love to have him, but wonder if playing second or third fiddle as an assistant coach is all that appealing.

Harrick, at his age, would be more likely to accept a position. I think we’d be fine with hiring him assuming he was kept on a tight leash. Perhaps he could take a non-recruiting role.

  18. BladenWolf 04/11/2011 at 1:51 PM #

I think Harrick as a mentor is okay but I have to agree with other posts that hiring him would be too caustic for us long term. Personally I think he got a raw deal at Georgia but the simple legacy of two probations at two different schools under his watch is hard to undo.
We’re all giddy about the Tutorgate debacle at Chapel Hole, so why create a situation where they (and the media) can rebut with Harrick on the court?
Stay with great assistants like Early, Lutz, (and possibly Moxley) and we will be headed in the right direction.

It will be a little while before a 3rd assistant is hired. Only 2 assistants can go out on the trail for recruiting, so they aren’t going to rush the third hire. It appears Dino is not in the running, but the third spot is not filled, could be a few weeks.

I think Harrick is only coming on in an advisor role, IF at all.

Anyone hear about Harrow, Leslie, Brown, or other players staying or going yet?

Here is something I didn’t know regarding Lutz’s time at Charlotte:

“Michael Beasley was supposed to go to Charlotte, and in fact, had given Bobby Lutz a verbal commitment. But when Beasley’s former DC Assault coach, Dalonte Hill, left Lutz’s bench for a similar assistant’s job at Kansas State, Beasley went with him. Beasley went on to become the player of the year and Hill the associate head coach at K-State, to the tune of $400,000 a year.”

I don’t think Fowler hired Lowe’s assistants but I could be wrong; at the very least he failed to insist that Lowe hire a top shelf assistant with plenty of college experience to paper the gap in Lowe’s resume, so not saying Fowler didn’t have some responsibility there.

In any event, staff looks very strong. The one thing I wonder about having Gaudio and Lutz is both guys have been head coaches recently, I wonder how you develop responsibilities and staff chemistry if both guys are hired … offensive and defensive coordinators? Gaudio may be thinking he can get a head gig somewhere small, his results at WFU were hardly awful (esp. compared to his predecessor this year).

We may not have gotten Sean Miller, but we did get the coach at Arizona before him as an assistant!

    Sounds like a Folwer statement.
