Iowa starting PG to transfer to State?

Is new NC State Head Men’s Basketball Coach Mark Gottfried already making waves nationally?

Cully Payne was the starting PG at Iowa before suffering a season ending injury. Yesterday morning, Payne was released from his scholarship and announced plans to transfer.

Payne is a Chicago guy, putting Illinois-Chicago, Loyola, and Northern Illinois in the mix of possible landing spots. However, the 21 year old said something that I took note of, “The guy I’d love to play for just got a job today”.

Do what? Now, I don’t watch ESPN 24/7, actually, not even 1/7 because I choose to be frugal and not spend money on cable or satellite, but back to the point, I am pretty sure we had the only NCAA college basketball Head Coach hire on Tuesday.  He goes on to say, “I can’t really say too much about that, but that would definitely be [a] place I’d look at”.

So, who is this Cully Payne? How good is he? What type of character does he have? And can he contribute to the Wolfpack basketball program? I guess those are questions that new NCSU coach Gottfried may be asking this week.

That is funny PoppaJohn. I do like the fact that a day after Gottfried was announced as our coach, a former recruit openly wants to talk about transferring to play for him.

Anyone know how bad the injury was?

His injury was a sports hernia.

So now we have 3 point gaurds if they all come back.

I don’t think there is anyway he is eligible next year. I’m pretty sure in BB and FB you have to actually be out of your previous school for a year, not just not have played (due to injury, RS, etc). Even if he never set foot on the court this semester, if he is enrolled at Iowa he won’t be able to play until AFTER the spring semester 2012 ends. That’s why Degand had to sit out a year even though he never played at ISU.

^^^^”What’s his reasoning for transferring out of Iowa?”

    One word………..Iowa.

    Oh yea, and Coach G!

I think ACC 10K is correct. Being released from his scholarship is just a technicality. Every kid who transfers is released.

Assuming he comes here, I think he’ll be the same year as Harrow, with two seasons of eligibility left after 2012. I’m not sure it’s a great fit for us. It’s nice that he wants to play for Gottfried, but there has to be more of a reason for us to offer him than that. I think optimally you’d like your PG’s staggered, so you never have to start over and hand the job to an unprepared freshman.

New to the board. Wanted to say that if he did not redshirt before freshman year, which I don’t believe he did, he could redshirt the mandatory year out and have 3 remaining years after that. He could forego a redshirt and play this year with three remaining. Would love to see him use red shirt year and have three years after. That would be worth getting him.

the only thing i know of with transfers is that if there’s a coaching change at the players present school the ncaas will allow a kid to step right in. larry drew is out a year right?

If he isn’t allowed to play this year he could use his regular redshirt year if he wanted, that would leave him with 3 years. We also need Lo Brown to log some serious minutes at the 2. So we really only have one true PG next year. And there is no harm in having a change of pace PG or one in the hole in case of injury. That is a good point about Farnold having to sit out though.

Has Payne made any decision/announcement yet?

  12. BAM 04/08/2011 at 8:31 AM #

He visits Loyola Chicago this weekend. So, prob won’t decide until next week at the earliest.

He said he wanted to stay close to home.
    How far is Chicago?
