Highly rated QB Picks Pack

Last night’s ESPN crawl was particularly sweet for NC State fans. As “TOBtime” shared in our message forums:

Last night, while watching Al/TN baseball game I notice the ESPN scroll says Delvon Simmons (4 star DT) is now going to Texas Tech and has DECOMMITTED from unx. Immediately following that scroll it talks about Mr. Summers and says he has verbally committed to NC State. FOllowing the NC State part was 1 other statement – Summers also had an offer from North Carolina.

The news hit our message boards yesterday (link), but we wanted to get it on the main blog this morning now that the mainstream press started reporting it…

…highly rated dual-thread Greensboro Page High School quarterback, James Summers has committed to NC State. Summers chose State over North Carolina and East Carolina.

As is the customary, there is a lag time in the recruiting cycle between good performance and recruiting bounty. It now appears as though Coach Tom O’Brien and staff are now in the process of converting last year’s great performance into a future Wolfpack roster.

Summers is NC State’s third commitment for 2012 joining two athletic defensive backs — Niles Clark of Georgia and Southern Nash’s Josh Sessoms (recruiting by East Carolina and Virginia Tech amongst others).

An article about Wolfpack football during the off-season that doesn’t involve injury to one of our star players… queue the twilight zone music! Great news and a good pick-up.

Scooter^ if you didnt already know, Mustafa Greene is having/had surgery this week on an ankle(i believe)… so theres your doom and gloom. I’ll be here all weekend, try the roast beef.

We’ll have some gaps to fill with this year’s departing seniors. Last year, inking a ‘fill-in’ class was OK, but TOB and crew need to bring in some serious studs for 2012 !

  4. TOBtime 04/15/2011 at 8:18 AM #

Barring something unforeseen Josh Sessoms is going to be GOOD for NC State.

Best wishes and get better soon Mustafa!

I’m not a doctor by any means but I’m pretty sure MOOOOOSE will be back for pre-season. I don’t think he will miss any PT. Correct me if I’m wrong.

^ That is the word — Mustafa will be ready to go for fall camp.

  7. Old MacDonald 04/15/2011 at 9:04 AM #

I am pretty sure that Delvon Simmons is a 5-star.

  8. PoppaJohn 04/15/2011 at 9:08 AM #

Great news! And a quality in-state recruit as well.

  9. Wolfy__79 04/15/2011 at 9:35 AM #

yeah this pick up seems to follow 4 w’s over unc and pretty solid season perfectly… what do you know, results/w’s may very well speak for themselves!

from what TOB said of mustafa.. i feel pretty good about him being back in action for the fall! worst case scenario for me, he misses some of the earlier games at full speed bug works his way into the mix.

i’m still waiting to see a lead horse for nc state running game under TOB. i don’t really know if it will come under the rb by committee? i suspect that glennon’s entrance may lead to more power formations but i don’t know?

Awesome news to hear! Also glad to have a fellow Firebird in Josh Sessoms comitting. Hope the kid makes a name for himself so that Julius Peppers isn’t the only athlete of note from Southern Nash.

“highly rated dual-thread Greensboro Page High School quarterback, James Summers has committed to NC State”

I don’t see that anywhere, where does it say that he is highly rated. Plus, I thought stars don’t matter. I guess they only matter when we reel in someone with a lot of stars i.e. Crisp and Glennon. The rest of the time, they don’t.

    ” I am pretty sure that Delvon Simmons is a 5-star. ”

That was probably before he decommitted from UNC-CHeat. Now that he’s headed to Lubbock (or anywhere but Chapel Hill) he’s probably only a 4.

Good comment Statefan1998, I was thinking the same thing.

Summmers has NO RATING from scout or rivals at this point. So calling him “highly” rated is like saying 15K was at the carolina spring game, highly inaccurate.

None of our three commitments are highly rated, or even rated for that matter. Our class this year, must include some high end prospects, because the last two have been average at best.

And as I’ve stated all along, we desperately need some WR prospects. Because if anyone has been paying attention, TOB has said it himself that the current group we got right now need to step up. That is what happens when you don’t have good recruiting classes, and in the case of WR, don’t even have a high volume of players to choose from.

interesting how NC State has 3 guys with “NR” in their star category and FSU has 1 ***** and 4 **** guys….

My oldest son will start attending Page High School next fall and I’m sure we’ll make it to at least a few football games. Saw Summers play a couple times last year and I thought he looked good, but I really wasn’t paying that much attention to him specifically. I’ll be sure to watch him a lot closer this upcoming season.

IMO all three Pack commits could have probably ended up next February with some pretty good ratings (i.e., stars.) But they made a mistake – they committed too early, didn’t leave anough time for other schools to find them, and did not leave the (faulty) rating guys time to fawn all over them. And I ain’t worried about it either! TOB & Co. have proved many times over that they can find the talent to succeed in their system.

  17. Plz2BStateFan 04/15/2011 at 1:23 PM #

We need to get a very solid class this year. It is possible that last years may produce a sort of void in “talent.” We need to have bookend good classes around it.

This all assumes that we have a weakness in last years class. Which isn’t necessarily a bad assumption. I hope I am wrong.

I really hate the ambiguity of these rating systems. Its such BS.

  18. Lunatic Fringe 04/15/2011 at 1:44 PM #

The lack of a rating in April does not equate to a low ranking. TOB clearly should have waited to offer these guys until after the services ranked them for us.

I don’t think you are ever going to see mind blowing “stars” classes out of TOB mainly due to the fact that he does not measure success in recruiting by those services. It does not mean that we will not get some solid players that may end up ranking 4-5 stars, but it has NEVER mattered to him and I don’t expect him to change that belief.

Niles is a perfect TOB type of player. He will probably redshirt his first year, give us 4 solid years, and basically be a model student athlete. Cobb County (in Georgia) is producing some really good athletic talent and Lassiter is one of the better programs. I actually saw Niles play basketball vs. Harrow a couple years ago and thought he was a pretty solid athlete at that time.

I hear Summers is a pretty solid baller too.

Looks like the Spring Game will get heavy rain and thunder, possible hail according to The Weather Channel. 🙁

Who’s going to go in the Rain?

    What about the BBQ?

    ^ Wolfy_79:
I totally agree with you. I have a feeling that with Glennon being a pocket passer and TOB eluding or saying that our FB will get some carries, we may be running a lot of two back formations like the I. From what I’ve seen of MOOOOSE, he is more of a skill runner than a power runner so I’m looking for a lot of FB blocking schemes to get him in space. MOOOOSE is definately got to be the lead horse though.
    MOOOOOSE!!!!!!!!!!!

Let’s not judge how good a recruit is by the number of starts by his name. TOB has proven More than once he has an eye for talent. Matt Ryan was not that highly ranked coming out of high school but TOB’s staff turned him out to be the #1 overall pick of the NFL draft and he has done a good job leading the Falcons. The 4 or 5 star recruit starts reading the news clips on them and get a bigger ego. Some times they are not worth the trouble. So let’s it play out on the field before judging.

  22. mafpack 04/15/2011 at 3:09 PM #

Never noticed that about Matt Ryan. Was rated a *** by both Rivals and Scout and only drew 4 offers before committing to BC. Rated 25th best QB in his class and not rated nationally at all.

i think the ratings matter but i also agree with TOB with him saying “they don’t know what their talking about..” i think both are true. if you guage a player strictly on his athletic ability then the stars matter more, but in regards to system and/or player development the stars/ratings matter less. i would like to see nc state grab up some highly touted recruits… but in saying that, we’d be recruiting against osu, nebraska, the gators, texas… not “butch the builder.” he hasn’t built sh##! recruiting 5*s is not building anything over there imo. i want TOB to keep on keeping on with what he’s doing!

by redshirting the majority of these recruits a year, they can make a better contribution to the team for still the four remaining years.

as mentioned above, we do need a little higher pedigree wr and continue to pick up good rbs! that i agree with. but also, in regards to this fella.. it’s been said alot in how the high school qb is often times the best athlete on the team.. i see this young man being developed into something other than qb.. i think TOB knows what he’s doing though…

Don’t knock the concept of running back by committee, Wolfy. It works very well, particularly if the backs have different running styles and strengths. There’s less wear and tear on the backs, their legs stay fresher during games, and it’s harder for defenses to adjust. I would rather have a good one-two punch and a spare anytime.
