Good vs. Evil Final Four Open Thread (Coaching Search Free!)

It’s the battle of good in the matinee, with evil featured in the nightcap. (Link here) Assuming you can follow basic logic, this means that the national final is guaranteed to match good vs. evil, to CBS’ delight (2010 featured such a matchup – Butler vs. Duke – and was a ratings bonanza).

There’s not much gray area, either. Butler and VCU are mid-major teams, with likeable players and fresh-faced, young, driven coaches. Guys who have built championship contenders with hard work and none of the advantages that “blue blood” programs enjoy. To root against them is virtually un-American. On the other hand, you have John Calipari (widely viewed as the most crooked active coach in college hoops) and Jim Calhoun (widely regarded as the biggest asshole in college athletics, possibly the entire world). Neither is much for NCAA compliance, despite having all the perks and advantages of high-visibilibility, major conference programs. Calhoun’s disgusting comments after a controversial, nail-biting win over Sendek’s first NCAAT Wolfpack squad elevated the Huskies to my least favorite team, even more hated than Duke and UNC.

I look forward to enjoying the games with the SFN community tonight. However, this thread should be 100% free of coaching search talk – I am taking a much-needed sabbatical from that, and want to simply enjoy good college hoops action. There are plenty of other threads to discuss, freak out, and argue about the coaching search. Thanks in advance for your understanding and basic reading comprehension.

Hiring Smart gives NC State millions in free advertising. No other coach would bring that to the table. There are many options but with no news there is no doubt Yow has been waiting to talk to Smart.

Regardless, we will be hearing about a Board meeting being called on Monday or Tuesday. My comments are based on the assumption that Stevens isn’t an option.

Anyone hear Barkley’s comment about Smart? He said by the end of the week he would be a very rich man. Good point….

I couldn’t help but think after seeing Tubby in the crowd that maybe we will try that avenue again.

As for the current game, I HATE both coaches so I hope they both loose. I do like Kemba though because he doesn’t seem to have the typical superstar attitude. He plays hard.

Keep the focus on the games, people. Talk coach search elsewhere.

Shit, do I ever hate UConn. Too bad Kentucky forgot to show up. Seems they thought they won the title by beating the Holes.

” I would think it would be more in the ballpark of $1.5 – 1.6 ”

Agreed. I also agree that any signing bonus should be no more than mid six figures. I’m intrigued by the loyalty bonus idea. That was something that I hadn’t thought about, but if we believe that whomever we hire has a good chance of success, then giving them incentive to NOT want to consider jumping ship quickly is probably worth the investment to avoid having to go through another coaching change too soon.

A lot of folks have been throwing around $2.5M as a number for Smart, but I think we’d be very irresponsible to do that. If you want to load the contract up with incentives for certain goals I’ve got no problem with that (25 regular season wins? Collect $250K….Conference Champs? Collect $250K…Final Four? Collect $500K, or a cool Mil for a national championship). But to commit to more than about one and a quarter Mil guaranteed for a coach with his experience is not a good basketball or business decision IMHO (despite this year’s success he is still a more risky hire IMHO).

Sorry BJD…I didn’t see your post until I posted that above. Feel free to delete it inappropriate.

Wow. I’m really surprised that UConn seemed to have UK so rattled to end the 1st half.

  7. Wufpacker 04/02/2011 at 9:41 PM #

And I agree re: Calipari and Calhoun and wishing they both could somehow lose. I’d much rather see VCU and Butler play again Monday night.

Any chance that we could get them to just eliminate both UConn and UK for general principle (I’m sure they both deserve to be disqualified for one thing or another) and then have VCU and Butler play games 2 and 3 of a best of three series?

According to Barkley, “Kentucky has shot the ball turrble”.

  9. eas 04/02/2011 at 9:46 PM #

Neither coach should be allowed in the NCAA tourney based on obvious violations. Too bad Cali leaves programs just in time to get free.

Both teams are sloppy and the previous VCU/BUTLER game was obviously better coached.

    Turrble….got to love Barkley

Just watched the 1/2 time interview with Brad Stevens. That dude is professional & flawless. We are going to see a lot of him over the years (regardless of where he is 5 years from now)

Helluva defensive effort there by Walker. Impressed.

  14. Wufpacker 04/02/2011 at 10:29 PM #

    oooohhhh…he just got “Chris Paul’ed”.

When ya think chat will be back up and running BJD? Not complaining, just curious.

Has anyone been watching any of the tourney games on the MMOD (march madness on demand) that CBSSportsline.com is offering? I didn’t this year, but have in years past. I’m surprised each year how good the video quality is (not to mention that they don’t try to charge for it).

  17. BloggerEsquire 04/02/2011 at 10:44 PM #

A minute left, you’re up by three, and your gassed opponent is shooting 30% from the line? Fouling doesn’t seem like a bad idea.

  18. BJD95 04/02/2011 at 10:45 PM #

I’ve barely been paying attention to the second half. Such shitty basketball.

  19. Wufpacker 04/02/2011 at 10:49 PM #

UK stands around just about all game long, looking like a bunch of chumps, then a VERY lucky break (and admittedly a good hustle play as well) and they are in a position to send this into overtime or even win with a three.

  20. ADVENTUROO 04/02/2011 at 10:50 PM #

what a DA foul….these coaches remind me of a Grade B Japanese Horror movie….The “BLOB from the Toxic Waste Dump” versus the “Slime from the Nuclear Reactor Leak”.

Any way that we can call Buffalo Wild Wings and get both teams zapped and watch Butler play VCU AGAIN on Monday night….

Also, the quality of the commercial is definitely NOT super bowl….the Hybrid is getting old and the Farmer’s is dumber….

  21. Wufpacker 04/02/2011 at 10:52 PM #

And then the predictable weave and heave desperation three (a la the Sendekian plan) rather than working the ball for a high probability two. Which team wants this one the least?

  22. BJD95 04/02/2011 at 10:57 PM #

Butler will face the greatest of evils on Monday, after losing a heartbreaker to the second greatest of evils last year. Fuck Jim Calhoun, that classless piece of shit.

  23. Wufpacker 04/02/2011 at 11:03 PM #

C’mon BJD….tell us what you really think.

  24. mak4dpak 04/02/2011 at 11:04 PM #

I hope Butler gets it right this time around. Go Bulldogs!

  25. BJD95 04/02/2011 at 11:12 PM #

The only bright side to a UConn win is that maybe Calhoun will retire and I’ll never have to see his ugly mug with his smug sneer on my TV ever again.
