Breaking news: Cronin staying at Cincinnati

Link.

One coach associated with the search has apparently reached an agreement to remain at Cincinnati. Mick Cronin grew up locally and was an alumnus of the school as well. The fit never made much sense to most any State fan, so many might see this as good news actually.

Earlier today, reports surfaced from various media outlets that Shaka Smart was rejected an offer from NC State to remain at VCU. His decision marks the continuation of successful mid-major coaches staying in their positions instead of moving on to bigger opportunities like NC State or Tennessee. Chris Mack of Xavier reportedly turned down $16 million to stay at Xavier. Brad Stevens of Butler is the most famous example.

The other name that has been associated with the search is Gregg Marshall of Wichita St. While talk of personality issues always come up with Marshall, it is hard to argue with his success as a program builder. He had a great season at Wichita St. this year culminating in NIT championship with wins over major conference teams Washington St, Virginia Tech, and Alabama. His last team at Winthrop was an #11 seed in the NCAA tournament and he upset #6 seed Notre Dame in the 1st round.

If he can beat major conference teams with low-major talent like Winthrop and mid-major talent like Wichita St., then his track record projects success at a job like NC State that has gotten top 15 talent since 1998. If he doesn’t recruit as well as previous NC State coaches, then there is a history of winning against major conference teams with lesser ranked talent.

Rumors persist of something else up Yow’s sleeve, but there is nothing solid that we have to report.

I have the feeling we sent out contract proposals to several coaches and agreed we’d honor those we didn’t select by having the pressers say “So-and-so turned down a $x.x million offer.”

VCU said we offered Smart over 2 mil, so I guess Marshall saying he isn’t worth as much as Smart as he says we only offered him 1.9 mil, Ha! I am sure both had agents contact the search firm and get a feel for what the job would pay and used it to leverage more money from their current schools. Evidently neither got a formal offer or entered into serious talks with us.

And when we announce our coach on Wednesday or Thursday, they will all have a heaping sewrving of dung to eat. LMAO.

  4. beeeejay 04/04/2011 at 5:54 PM #

BJD can I ask why we will wait until then to announce. Why not just do it later tomorrow night around 5 or 6 when the news cycle will need something else to talk about?

  5. RememberV 04/04/2011 at 5:56 PM #

Just wait good things are going to happen.

  6. wbnation 04/04/2011 at 5:57 PM #

yeah cause these same idiot media types were so wrong about our last coaching search…..What if they have been right all along? What if we are down to the D-list…we don’t have fowlup to blame this one on. So who takes this one in the chin?

  7. beeeejay 04/04/2011 at 5:58 PM #

I’m not saying good things aren’t coming just curious about the timing is all

  8. kyjelly 04/04/2011 at 5:59 PM #

It is sad that this guy was even in the running.

  9. BJD95 04/04/2011 at 6:00 PM #

It will all make sense in the end. Kind of like Twin Peaks.

Wait, that never made sense. 🙂

I wonder if Sidney would “save us” again. This time he could hit the ground running, not having to finish his degree and having to pass the NCAA test.

Someone in a radio talk show referrred to the State job as “Dead Man Walking”

to quote another late 80s/early 90s Fox TV show – “I want to believe”- but right now, I gotta say, I’m having a hard time staying positive.

What a bizarro world. Greg Doyel standing shoulder to shoulder with SFN to say “I told you so.” Coming soon to a theater near you…

Interesting game of high-stakes poker going on. Part of me says if you have a big name in your hand you announce it just in time for the pre-game show or halftime tonight, so that it’s all over the place while the most attention is focused on college basketball. If it’s not a home run you probably want to make the announcement tomorrow morning so that tonight’s game – particularly if won by Butler – will overshadow the underwhelmingness of it all.
Smart, Marshall, Cronin et al have all called; now it’s time for Yow to call or raise. Considering all the public withdrawals, the alleged declines (doesn’t matter if it’s true, perception = reality) and the $50,000 that went to Parker, if we end up with ho-hum hire things are really going to get bad.
And if the hire is Barnes, things are still going to be bad, because everyone but NCSU will spin that as he had to get out of Austin because his seat was too hot and Raleigh was a good place to land because nobody else wanted the job and he could retire in five years anyway.
Hoping the announcement doesn’t run like the first 15 seconds of this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LocjflS5Jko.

    here’s something to do
    while we wait and speculate:

    it’s safe for work.
or, at least, for my work.

I hope Greg Doyell is right. I hope that Deb Yow is doing for coaching searches what Amato did for assistant football coaches salaries.

BJD I pray that you are correct and know that big news is in the works….otherwise I am afraid that maybe the lunacy of this search has finally gotten to you

  18. JSRy2k 04/04/2011 at 6:19 PM #

    BJD, is this your reference?
    http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/story/14797346/nc-state-basketball-finally-has-chance-to-be-great-again

I can’t stand Gregg Doyel but, holy cow, he of all people understands the NCSU job – “This is a new regime (Woodson & Yow), I tell you. And this is a sleeping giant of a job…Debbie Yow won’t be nearly as much fun (as Lee Fowler). She’ll target a star, and I bet she gets one, but her goal will be for people like me and you to never know who it is. Not until he’s standing in front of an N.C. State banner, meeting the media and vowing to restore the Wolfpack to greatness.”

^wink, wink: I think it is time to pull out her suprise.

Well this is what you all asked for!!!! Why let Sidney finish out his contract with “his” players when we can run him off, pay off his contract and hire a third rate coach from a school who has done decent at best with teams no where near the level he is going to face in the ACC. Well done fans!!!! Like before anyone “attractive” has or will turn us down. The chips are once again falling in place for us yet again post Sendek!!!! Lets move towards short term scholarships based on performance. Love to see some of these kids who attend a university for free and have their classes basically arranged for them lose their scholarship when they lag up and down the court!!!

  21. kyjelly 04/04/2011 at 6:29 PM #

Hey don’t even go there Sid is part of the problem not a solution he had the chance. He was not even a 3rd rate caoch.

  22. wbnation 04/04/2011 at 6:34 PM #

What false statements has the media at large put out about the NC State coaching search? I have heard no denials. We keep looking for scapegoats when its the AD’s department that still looks inept at making a coaching hire. Jed had his search out in the open making State look bad, this time State is paying millions of dollars to a search firm to keep it quite..and State is still looking bad. WTF. You can blame the media when and if State hires a big name…..but ifs its another c-lister or d-lister like Sidney..then who does State blame this one on? The media?…Fowlup?

  23. StandUpAndHowl 04/04/2011 at 6:40 PM #

Was a bona fide offer made? I find it hard to believe that we’d make an offer without knowing the answer in advance. Like a marriage proposal, you only ask after the outcome is assured. Of course, it’s possible that there was an understanding and we were thrown a curve.

  24. pack4ever 04/04/2011 at 6:42 PM #

guys i can not believe this but i actually heard my brother on the adam gold show today and i want you guys to think and i mean really think about what he said. its incredible how much sense it makes. (and if you knew him like i do you would understand). 17 days of quiet and then today we hear that alledgedly shaka smart stays, cronin stays at cinnci, and then greg marshall stays. all of this happens in less than a 12 hour period. i think mrs. yow has her person and all three of these people were informed today that thank you for your interest but we have our guy. keep in mind that all of this would come from the search committee. we have heard of the tweets of “homerun hire” from brando and tweets from hodge. call me crazy but we will have a new coach and it will break tomorrow. his name is brad stevens. feel free to argue my point but you have to admit that this is a possibility

  25. JSRy2k 04/04/2011 at 6:47 PM #

    pack4ever:
Tend to agree up to the point of Brad Stevens being the guy. I still think it could be anybody.
