Breaking news: Cronin staying at Cincinnati

Link.

One coach associated with the search has apparently reached an agreement to remain at Cincinnati. Mick Cronin grew up locally and was an alumnus of the school as well. The fit never made much sense to most any State fan, so many might see this as good news actually.

Earlier today, reports surfaced from various media outlets that Shaka Smart was rejected an offer from NC State to remain at VCU. His decision marks the continuation of successful mid-major coaches staying in their positions instead of moving on to bigger opportunities like NC State or Tennessee. Chris Mack of Xavier reportedly turned down $16 million to stay at Xavier. Brad Stevens of Butler is the most famous example.

The other name that has been associated with the search is Gregg Marshall of Wichita St. While talk of personality issues always come up with Marshall, it is hard to argue with his success as a program builder. He had a great season at Wichita St. this year culminating in NIT championship with wins over major conference teams Washington St, Virginia Tech, and Alabama. His last team at Winthrop was an #11 seed in the NCAA tournament and he upset #6 seed Notre Dame in the 1st round.

If he can beat major conference teams with low-major talent like Winthrop and mid-major talent like Wichita St., then his track record projects success at a job like NC State that has gotten top 15 talent since 1998. If he doesn’t recruit as well as previous NC State coaches, then there is a history of winning against major conference teams with lesser ranked talent.

Rumors persist of something else up Yow’s sleeve, but there is nothing solid that we have to report.

TVP – no worries, man. You could logically dismiss my theory until you saw three dominoes fall in short succession like that.

I feel much better about where we are than I have in at least a week or two.

Debbie Yow is one hell of a riverboat gambler, and has an even better poker face.

This is a happy day, mes amis. Don’t let your natural Wolfpack pessimism override your basic logic/reasoning skills. Let the jokes and mockery roll off like water off a duck’s back.

Again – he who laughs last, laughs best. And we are going to laugh our asses off.

So BJD can I ask if you and the other authors have discussed who you believe this big fish on the hook may be then and have any ideas. I guess my question is if there is a consensus among authors here or just all speculation still

“Remember, there IS a BB game tonight.”

if we did end up landing a shitty hire then I bet DY would have announced it already, thinking the NC game could take some of the spotlight off of us.

if we are landing a good hire I would expect her to wait until after or close to the NC game to increase the spotlight on us.

Wait, Cronin’s in Cincinnati? Then who the heck’s doing the Tonight Show???!! I gotta keep up with these things better.

  9. tann84 04/04/2011 at 4:41 PM #

    Indeed @Statefan1998

The logic is hard to argue with. I can’t believe Marshall would let this job pass him by if he had a shot at it. David Glenn keeps writing about two anonymous coaches who are ready to take the job. I was 100% convinced that one of them had to be Marshall. If Glenn was right, which is doubtful, the only reason either or both of those coaches in waiting would pull out, would be if Yow had landed her a big ‘ol whale. Please let this be a good thing!

Bill Walton turns down NC State job on Adam Gold’s show. After calling Tommy Burleson the devil.

Trying to think about other things… Congrats to Archie Miller heading to Dayton. Brad Stevens may win tonight, but I think he just lost his title as the most baby-faced D1 coach.

Vitale just tweeted we should hire Bob Knight. Maybe not a bad idea.

I never thought Cronin was a candidate. He wasn’t a logical choice and was one of those “names” that pops up at the end of searches — much like Phil Ford did last time. Nobody in their rational mind would want to try to hire Cronin away from his alma mater — particularly given how lukewarm the reaction would be anywhere else. Many Wolfpack fans like me probably highly dislike Cronin due to Degand’s injury. It just didn’t make any sense at all. Phil Ford didn’t make any sense either. I chalked it up to end of search noise.

Smart pulling out was interesting. I never thought he was on our radar initially, was never a huge fan due to the risk, but was scared we might get desperate and go for the flash in the pan. I was particularly concerned when I saw the posts on SFN’s front page. I thought at that point he probably was a target. I must admit that the way VCU’s AD spun things, the courtship seemed serious. He may be the next Billy Donovan, but I’m kind of glad that we’re not going to spend the next 5 years watching him learn on the job.

If Marshall does indeed pull out today, then I think BJD may be on to something. That will mean one of two things have happened — we’ve either got someone locked up but can’t announce it or we’ve completely struck out. From all accounts (and the beats of the drum of his supporters), Marshall would really want this job. If he announces in an hour he’s staying at Wichita, then that looks to me like the opening wasn’t open to him.

I honestly thought Marshall and Brey were the floor candidates. There’s been no real talk of Brey (other than the fears of people like me). If Marshall’s taking himself out of contention and Brey was never in play, then we’ve seemingly no longer got the floor.

That would mean we have something else signed and sealed but that can’t be announced. I believe if we could announce today we would to try and get some free press on the game tonight (even if it is a blurb about the coaching carousel). There are only so many coaches still playing…….. Very interesting.

How is the AP National Coach of the Year a floor? Crazy.

I’m as excited as anyone one about this search. My senior year at NCSU was 1974, and in ’83 I watched the final at my house with a good friend UNC grad. When “the Dunk” was made we both jumped up, gave each other a high ten and my wedding ring flew off my finger! Spent the next ten minutes looking for it to no avail; found it six months later on a book shelf. But I digress . . .
I’ve always maintained that Duke and UNC-CHeat fans have NO emotional investment in their teams like we State fans do. Most of their fans have never faced a prolonged dry spell in the past 30 years (but boy, did the UNC fans scatter a few years back, didn’t they?) We stick with the Red-and-White in thick and thin, and it’s been mediocre-to-thin the past 20 years, with some flashes of hope thrown in to keep us salivating. Little wonder of all the angst.
So, here we are again. Seems like Groundhog Day, I know, and we think that the ending will be the same. Eager anticipation followed by bitter disappointment. Like hoping for the Harley at Christmas and waking up to a Schwinn under the tree. It rides, but it’s not the same level of ride and we can’t keep up with the big boys. I’m right there with ya, folks.
I truly believe it will be different this time. Why? Lots of factors have changed. We start with the AD and Chancellor. Two pros who have the ability to listen to those that fund the university’s programs. Some of the ghosts of the past who hated it when V was successful have moved on. The “mole” has finally been extracted fron the Athletic Department. And our AD understands winning and excellence, and she “refuses to accept the status quo.” What a breath of fresh air when I read that for the first time! Everything about her is classy, professional and focused. Thank God she doesn’t waste her time reading the blogs! She is doing her work. She is doing it well. She is not allowing the discordant background noise (talking heads, reporters, naysayers, us) to distract her from the task at hand.
There are some strong voices of reason on this site. The web master counsels patience – always a good thing. Adventuroo brings an insider’s perspective, intelligence, experience and always an upbeat attitude. And he is a well-schooled student of NCSU BB history. I take my hat off to you, sir! BJD95 deserves a shout-out for his profile picture alone! Many other of you have learned to stand tall in the tornado as this process unfolds. Of course, there will always be the second-guessers, the catastrophizers (nice word, huh?), the negative Normans, the Henny Pennys – as there are on all blogs of any ilk. No matter who we hire some will be unhappy. So be it, and bless their little hearts (that’s Southern woman code for “they don’t have a clue and never will.”).
At this moment nearly everyone that we REALLY want is in play. The only one who has recently made a change that I thought could be a guy for us is Lon Kruger. I suspect that had been in the works for a while. And I really think that the only job Brad Stephens would leave Butler for is Indiana. He so much as said so on ESPN recently. For an established coach to make a move to NCSU, there are so many details unrelated to the game that have to be satisfied – equipment deals, incentives (how about this – a $50,000 bonus every time we beat Duke or UNC, double that if it’s on their home court), contract buyouts, selling a house, etc. For the up-and-comers on our short list, the season had to play out. I believe it has now done so. SS is riding a wave of glory right now. It was a true Cinderella story this year. But to announce a change so soon this week (with a million more on the table and the love of the entire state behind him) to go to a program with such high expectations is unrealistic and bordering on suicidal, career-wise. If he fails, he’s a dead duck forever.
I am in no way qualified to project the new hire. Heck, if I was that good I’d be retired! But the “feeling” is very good this time. We’re in good hands; hands of people who know what they’re doing and who care about NC State. Be patient for a few more days. Think positive. Dream BIG! We will be rewarded.
Remember – “Still water runs deep.”
    Peace. Out.

with all the rumored guys seemingly pulling out at once, either we have someone or there is some big league flailing going on. I hope like heck we have a big fish on the line and are just waiting to bring him in the boat. I thought Marshall would be the floor guy. If we had to go to basement candidates it would have been either Haith or Purnell possibly.

Even with Mike Brey I’d be mildly pleased at this point. I’m just wanting to win like everyone else and I trust we’ll get someone good in that wants to be here.

If there is no one else on the line at this point and we have been given the kibosh…just damn. Doesn’t seem fair, I really thought we were turning the corner with getting rid of Uncle Jed and the other screw ups from the last 15 – 20 years.

Hoping and getting ready to start praying….

  18. Hungwolf 04/04/2011 at 5:19 PM #

When the search ends I hope Debbie calls out idiots like David Glenn that have claimed they know what is going on. Glen states we had detailed talks with Smart during his final 4 run, what a load of bull! The VCU AD claimed during the entire NCAA run we never asked permission to talk to Smart and Greg Doyle states we never made a formal offer to Smart. I doubt Glen has any idea what our search firm has or has not done!

  19. Thompson44 04/04/2011 at 5:19 PM #

This should prove to us all that we are not the Program we think we are. Shaka Smart will never be as wanted as he is right now and we could not persuade him to come. Is the whole Coaching world terrified of playing against K an Roy if so I want to put my name in for the job because nothing would make me happier than taking Roys boys to the woodshed twice a year. This is just sad, I don’t know what to think anymore. The second time in 5 years that we can’t convince a good Coach to come to State. We have the facilities, a good core of players coming back and still no one has the Balls to take on the challenge.

  20. Howler 04/04/2011 at 5:20 PM #

Butane, your wedding ring story is the best NCSU “what happened to me when” story I have ever heard. Mine pales in comparison, but the first time we beat FSU in football, I was headed home and listening to the end of the game on the radio. I was in a huge rush to get in the garage and in front of the TV. I wheeled in and scraped my passenger side mirror off on the garage wall. Watched the very end of the game and dealt with the car later.

  21. Texpack 04/04/2011 at 5:24 PM #

DY won’t comment publicly about anything other than people saying they were offered the job and turned it down when they weren’t offered the job.

    Nice, Howler! A true fan!

The national media seems be on the ‘its not nc state, no one wants to work for debbie yow’ line now. If we don’t have a head coach by Friday, they are right.

  24. tuckerdorm1983 04/04/2011 at 5:35 PM #

I see the rumor mill is working overtime. Fellas, who knows what is going on. They are trying to hire the coach with the utmost discretion. Num Nut “journalists” (note journalist is in quotes to denote a hefty amount of skepticism on my part) try to say the know.
Someone says they saw a certian coach in Raleigh and all hell breaks lose on speculation. A coach says he is happy at his school and we say “yep that bastard turned us down”.

For God’s sake shut the rumor mill down and stick with the facts.
FACT: We don’t know jack sh*t!!!
