ACC Now: CJ Leslie still running with the Pack

New NC State Head Basketball Coach, Mark Gottfried, may have just landed his biggest recruit of his first April signing period with NC State as CJ Leslie will remain in Raleigh for his sophomore season.

Leslie did not have much of an option to turn pro this offseason based on a freshman campaign that clearly did not live up to expectations. On the court, it was obvious that Leslie’s fantastic natural athleticism had served to compensate for weak fundamental basketball skills (like shooting and passing) at less competitive levels. Off the court, clashed with the previous coaching staff as he served at least one suspension during the season for violating team rules (amidst rumors that he was actually kicked off the team and had to be voted back by his teammates.)

I fully believe that Leslie will be helped by another year of development and a different approach by a new coaching staff.

N.C. State forward C.J. Leslie has told the Wolfpack’s coaches that he did not petition the NBA for inclusion in this summer’s draft as an early-entry candidate, team spokeswoman Annabelle Myers said this afternoon. The deadline for underclassmen to enter the draft was 11:59 p.m. on Sunday.

Leslie, who’s from Holly Springs and played for Word of God Academy in high school, was named to the ACCall-freshman team last season. He led the Wolfpack in rebounding (7.2 rpg) and was second in scoring (11.0 ppg) only to senior Tracy Smith as N.C. State finished 15-16 in coach Sidney Lowe’s final season.

After the April 5 news conference to announce the hiring of coach Mark Gottfried, Leslie said he wanted to get to know Gottfried better before deciding whether to enter the draft. A 6-foot-8 forward, Leslie joins Lorenzo Brown and Scott Wood to give N.C. State three returning starters in Gottfried’s first season.

Despite Leslie’s weaknesses on the court in his freshman year, his skills and presence make a tremendous difference in the way NC State’s 2011-2012 season will be projected and perceived. If Ryan Harrow also opts to return to NC State (amidst some transfer rumors), the Wolfpack could have enough talent to secure a berth in the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

Harrow, Lorenzo Brown, Scott Wood, CJ Williams, CJ Leslie, Richard Howell, DeShawn Painter and Jordan Vandenberg provide just enough versatility, experience and talent to generate 20 wins and an NCAA Tournament berth with a little fortune and avoiding injury. Williams, Wood and Leslie’s versatility and interchangeability between multiple positions serve almost as if we had a few more capable bodies on the roster.

As to Harrow, a personal decision, but perhaps not the best. He made his bed, so let him lie in it. Gott and State will be just fine without him. Go Pack.

Maybe we used this word to save some face, but it’s being touted as a “mutual” decision. If it really is mutual, then the new coaches must have not liked something about Harrow.

PackInsider.com has some good thoughts on that here:

    Their comments:

We’ll have more tonight and tomorrow but here’s the rundown…

    – The Harrow’s weren’t all that happy about how Lowe handled Harrow in year 1. From his playing time to his system, (not their words) but they felt like they were sold a lie.

-Mark Edwards (AND1 trainter/Ryan Harrow’s trainer) was not happy with the way Harrow was handled and thought Ryan should be a one and done player, not sitting behind Javi Gonzalez waiting for his chance.

    – We’re hearing schools like Kentucky, Fresno State, Georgia, St. Johns…. none are coming from great sources but we’ll find out more soon.

    – Harrow struggled to find his role, his shot and his confidence in year one, but that’s basically any freshman. Our thought is that Ryan came in with very lofty goals and when they weren’t reached he wanted out, wanted a fresh start.

-We as the media can take some blame as I think Harrow had a lot of pressure on him to perform. His body wasn’t ready for ACC play and he wasn’t polished enough on the defensive end or from beyond the arc to give him a chance to become the player most thought he’d be. I think with a coach willing to push him and him regaining his hunger, he’d be able to be a superstar at State, but it looks like he won’t be giving that a chance.

    – I’m not sure what he wants in a program, but it’d be hard for any decent PG to pass up 35 minutes per game in the ACC for any team. Great exposure.

    – My guess, and I’m sure it won’t ever be admitted, but deep down Harrow wanted the spotlight, he admittedly loves it. He’s at his best when he’s the go-to guy and as long as CJ Leslie is around Harrow wasn’t going to get that. Not saying that was his reason to leave, just saying to take it into consideration.

That last bullet has some credibility because, as the next comment pointed out, Harrow’s decision came right after CJL announced he was not turning pro. So maybe he really did crave the spotlight, and he knew CJL stood in the way of that.

Hard to believe that he would realistically think he could be ‘the man’ at an ACC school at a whopping 150 lbs…

I didn’t suggest it was a realistic goal of his.

    But I wouldn’t want a player that DIDN’T think that way. 🙂
